Direct or indirect querist?

Are you a direct or indirect querist? I am direct; DH indirect. There was an example this morning.

Him: "Are you going anywhere today?"

Me: "Yes, to G, and I might go along to H later for some sealant for that slight leak under the kitcehn sink."

Him: "I wouldn't go to H today if I were you."

Me: "Oh, why?"

Him: "Because the flood by F is already quite deep so you might get stuck."

Then it dawned on me... he wanted to take the old 4x4 so that he could get through the flooded bits of road. Which left me wondering why he didn't just say: "Can I take the truck today? The roads will be pretty bad." To which I could have answered: "Yes. Sure."

This kind of wandering around the crux of the issue is quite common. I quite often have to work out what he's on about by piecing things together. It can be quite amusing but sometimes, if I'm tired for instance, I just wish he'd get to the point in a more direct way.

Mine just goes off on my bike without asking at all. hmm

grin usually women who do this innit?
Musing about this, I think I am more indirect and DH is very direct.

I'm indirect. DH is direct.

Mmm, interesting. Hadn't thought much about this until now. OH is direct I think. We both are. it saves time. But my son and my brother aren't and always start with a trap ie 'what are you up to?' or 'what are you doing?' I usually reply 'why?' because experience makes me suspicious. Just wish they'd come straight out with whatever it is they need/want to ask me...

DH and I are both quite direct I think.
The indirect one is DD2 who will ring up with a question, and you never know whether it's going to lead to an invitation to dinner, a question about the family history, or news of fresh disasters grin

I'm very direct (painfully so I'm told) but DH uses guerrilla tactics to trap me and speaks in coded phrases.

kittylester Mon 09-Nov-15 14:17:37

DD3 asks things like 'Will you be in this afternoon?'. Me, thinking a visit from her and DGC 'Yes probably, why?'. Well, if you go out could you go to ..... and get a .... for me'.

POGS Mon 09-Nov-15 14:21:01

Direct usually but it depends if I'm 'after something' then I tread more carefully.

Alea Mon 09-Nov-15 14:34:10

"Mu - um, are you doing anything on the .... Of.....?" ( months ahead,) "Don't think so, " I reply cautiously , then there invariably follows a request for a babysit/sleepover!

That's indirect? Yes? grin

I am direct
DH can be both direct and indirect, thinking about it. Which catches me offguard sometimes. I think it depends what the subject is for him. Some subjects he goes around the houses, eg medical, and yes car too, talking about family members[not the closest ones] and some subjects he is very direct[close family members, food, my tidying up!].

ninathenana Mon 09-Nov-15 14:45:17

Sounds like DD when she was local Alea

DH and I are direct.

Ana Mon 09-Nov-15 14:47:27

Must be very frustrating if both of you is indirect! grin

thatbags Mon 09-Nov-15 14:51:08

Just remembered another. He commented on how the sunshine "really catches that cobweb in the window".

"Yes," says I, "why do you think I leave it there?" wink

It's actually quite unusual for him to notice anything as 'domestic' as that.

ffinnochio Mon 09-Nov-15 15:11:27

Mostly direct, altho' I'm aware I engage in the indirect route at times, which I'm not comfortable with because I dislike being asked indirect questions!

ffinnochio Mon 09-Nov-15 15:13:19

I have been told that I am refreshingly direct ........ hmm

janeainsworth Mon 09-Nov-15 15:13:39

I think the antidote to indirect questions is 'Why do you ask?' in a firm tone wink

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 09-Nov-15 15:45:05

DH is direct and I am both, but I am usually indirect because I think I need to tread carefully or want something! grin

Katek Mon 09-Nov-15 19:10:18

I adopt the closed question technique with DH when necessary to shut down waffle and prevarication!

aggie Mon 09-Nov-15 19:26:42

I ask a question requiring a straight yes or no and five minutes later he is still waffling , I am tapping my toe in a menacing manner and ask again through gritted teeth

downtoearth Mon 09-Nov-15 19:37:59

I am direct ...he goes round the houses, and up and down the high street..like vq I ask questions requiring a yes/no answer when trying to gain information/intention

grannyactivist Mon 09-Nov-15 19:49:59

Both fairly direct - along with our children.

I was with a friend a couple of days ago and a another friend asked if one of us could do her a favour; I immediately said "Yes of course, if I'm able" and at the same time my friend said "What is it you want?"

Vive la difference!

FarNorth Mon 09-Nov-15 21:10:11

I'm quite direct and often don't realise what someone is getting at, if they are indirect.
In the conversation about the floods, that bags, I'd likely have said "Oh, I'll be fine, I'll take the 4x4."
Maybe getting a few answers like that could re-direct the thought processes of an indirect person.

loopylou Tue 10-Nov-15 07:47:14

I'm direct, DH anything but hmm
Mind you though, when his response is 'I wouldn't say no' or 'Whatdo you want to do?' I feel my hackles rising!
Invariably the second response will still lead to doing what he wants to do.

Grannyknot Tue 10-Nov-15 08:13:08

We've switched over the years - I used to come at something in a roundabout way, he would be (sometimes ruthlessly) direct. Now it's the other way round! grin
