Whatever happened to polo necks?

I was looking at jumpers online, and saw one polo necked sweater. Now, I was a big fan in my youth, but it made me realise they are few and far between nowadays.
I even had wee pretend polo necks I wore under v necked sweaters or open necked blouses which gave the illusion of a sweater.

I have one but its loose like a cowl neck rather than polo. Never could wear a tight fitting one I'd get hot and stressy if i tried.

I’ve got several ancient M&S cotton ones that I dig out each winter. My neck gets really cold if I don’t wear one or a scarf. I’m looking to find some cotton replacements for them though.

If you do an internet search there are quite a few, seem to be called roll necks now, Cotton Traders have 4/5 if not more.

I’ve just looked at the Cotton Traders ones. House of Bruar sell them too but they’re a bit pricey. Lots of colours, though. Trouble is sleeves are always too long for me these days. As well as shrinking in height I’ve always had very short arms. I have to wear a polo neck under anything woolly as I can’t bear wool touching my skin. Thankfully cotton things that I bought years ago seem to last forever. I’ve got some Top Shop sleeveless vest tops that are thirty years old.

They itch around the neck, I haven't worn one for years, I'm another who doesn't like wool next to my skin, I did buy them in cotton once, but I've no desire to wear one again. I'm alright with cardigans. I wear a scarf in the very cold weather.

My o/h wears polo necks in the winter for golf, he's got a black one, I call it his Milk Tray jumper grin

I wanted a poloneck cotton top to wear under a sleeveless, knitted sort of tabard (now there's an old-fashioned word! smile) looked everywhere and eventually settled on this. All cotton, and the quality is fine. The sleeves are a bit long for me but on the whole I'm very happy with my purchase.

I’m wearing one today. Boden 2021

I've got several ones from M&S. They were sold as thermal vests. Ideal under scratchy wool jumpers or less substantial tops.

I have a merino wool polo jumper which will be worn daily through to April probably, underneath a wool sweater. Merino does not itch, scratch or irritate in any way.

My M&S cotton polos come out every year. I have various colours and wear them under my wool jumpers. Wore one on Monday for the first time this year as it’s turned quite cold. I don’t like tight ones as I hate the feel of them around my neck and they’re not very flattering on an older neck.

Am going to look on M&S, I love a polo neck but do think they are called roll necks now just as tank tops are called sweater vests.

I am wearing a black polo neck sweater at the moment. Always have one in my wardrobe since I bought one with my first earnings from the Christmas post. They nourish my inner beatnik.
This one is about four years old at least. Came from The White Company, far too expensive, wool balls all over but is very warm. I find wool polo necks irritate my neck, probably due to my wrinkly skin; I can't wear the close fitting ones at all.

I wear polo necks all winter, most are from M&S. I bought one in the sale from Sainsbury last year too.
Thermal ones from Damart are beautiful too, a bit pricey but they’re worth it.

Polonecks don’t suit me - my neck is not long enough and I always feel suffocated, when I wear them ….

Blossoming Wed 21-Oct-26 18:08:13

I can’t wear them nowadays, they irritate my neck too much.

Polo necks don't seem to be in Vogue.
I love them in the Winter.
I can't find twin sets that are a reasonable price.
I really used to love to wear them with kilts-another item which has zoomed up in price.

Check out Seasalt. They have loads.

Nothing happened, I wear polo necks.

Marg75 Wed 21-Oct-26 21:58:32

I love polo necks in the winter, just bought two from House of Bruar, lambswool, and I was lucky to see them in their sale in September. Yes, the cotton 'landing' tops from Seasalt are really nice as well.

Polo necks are on trend they’re everywhere ! Uniqlo have lightweight wool all high street stores have various weights and styles …

poppysmum Thu 22-Oct-26 14:01:35

i bought some cotton 'polo' necks the other day to pop under sweat tops when chilly, they seem more like turtle necks and do not sit properly under them sort of keep flipping up and rolling in an awful looking heap
years ago i had some nylon ribbed polo necks in orange navy black and white, they looked lovely alone or under, wore for years too

I had to look up turtlenecks when I search for a polo necked jumper otherwise I was inundated with polo shirts. I think it is because we are becoming more americanised!

CarrotTop Thu 22-Oct-26 14:24:20

They've had the bottoms chopped off and are now called "neck-warmer inserts", I think.
Polos were always too high for my neck, I spent the whole time pulling at it like a vicar on a hot day.

I did not know polo necks had gone out of fashion, but then I wouldn't as I never could bear to have one on for more then a few seconds.

I do remember how hard it once was (when I was a teenager) to get a jumper without a polo neck.
