Ooh, fascinating, it took over a year of living with DBH to realise what was going on. It still drives me mad at times. I am direct, he is indirect. It took me months to click, the first example I remember very clearly. I was newly pregnant and so spent ages in our one and only loo at the time (folic acid!). He would loiter outside and ask 'Are you ok?', and I would answer, 'Yes, thank you!'
It finally sunk in that he wasn't at all concerned for my well-being - he wanted the loo!
MiL is exactly the same, so I know where he gets it from. The other week when she was here she spent ages quizzing me about our movements this Xmas (DD and family staying with us for a week) but seemed unable to accept it for some reason. She kept returning to it and I was getting quite irritated, she seemed unable to believe me! I thought I had her sussed - I presumed that she wanted us up there, as she often does, so said Sorry, we just couldn't fit in a visit up there as well. She looked horrified. What she had actually been hoping to do was pass over the care of Great Uncle!
