I do find myself envying people who seem to find a congenial group wherever they go, who launch themselves wholeheartedly into their local church/WI/book club or whatever. I am extrovert on the surface, but very reserved deep down, a reserve some people take as stand-offishness.
My mother being German in a small town in Scotland not long after the war never found it easy to fit in, while my father was universally popular but held back from many social occasions maybe because he sensed animosity to Mum and just wasn't prepared to bother with people like that.
Perhaps we should never have moved to a village but stayed in the city where these things matter less as I can say I have honestly tried and still find it a struggle. I was involved with charities in London, but never felt brave enough to try to get involved here; of course I joined the PTA, but again always felt a newbie, got involved at our church ( until it went all happy clappy and I couldn't quite get on with that!), I am Treasurer of our local women's group and belong to a book club, but I often feel I have to force myself to make the effort to join in the chitchat and find it hard to be 100% involved. If I am honest I feel like an observer or an outsider, even finding it hard to join in some of the jolly banter at our GN virtual parties!!
Should I just give over thinking about it? Just take the plunge? Or is it silly to try to be something I am not?

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 11:30:28

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 11:31:16

wink (that's to Lona as well)

Sheena Mon 08-Jun-15 11:52:58

Lona..I could have written your post too..(again it seems we think alike grin you aren't my long lost win by any chance !!)

And Jinglebellsfrocks you did sort of admit it as you said you find most people quite boring....which although is your opinion .. I find a little harsh and quite hurtful to people who can be easily intimidated and feel maybe they have not got a lot to offer.

Sheena Mon 08-Jun-15 11:53:26

Lona...I meant twin !!!!!

janerowena Mon 08-Jun-15 13:13:26

gracesgran I find it interesting that you mention marketing. I lost a job because I flatly refused to go out selling when the business was suffering, I knew I just couldn't do it. I too am confident but reserved. I like my own company, I am not bored. I have friends who are constantly going out, as if they are scared to be on their own. It's taken a while for friends here to realise I don't want to be out socialising all the time, they don't try to push. I don't find going out an effort at the time, not at all, it's taken years to realise why I am so shattered the following day. I just find social interaction with people I don't know well exhausting, and it takes me a long time to relax in their company. Not that they would ever know it.

And yes - some people are hard work. You ask a question, hoping to find common ground and all you get is Yes or No in reply. Maybe because they are desperately shy, but you need more, you can't just stand there asking, do you have any children, where do you live, how do you know the hostess/host, or what year is your child in, without any feedback at all, because then you start to sound like a hairdresser as you ask where they are going on holiday.

Oh FFS. hmm

Poor sensitive little souls on here then?

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 13:24:49

And let Lona talk for herself. She seemed quite cheerful about it. hmm

Sheena Mon 08-Jun-15 13:45:26

Yes, jinglebellsfrocks, there are some "poor sensitive little souls on here"...and I wasn't talking for Lona....I was expressing myself.

I have read many of your posts on various threads on Gransnet and some of them are pretty waspish...maybe lots of people know you well on here but I am fairly new...and one of those poor sensitive little souls.

Lots of people have written on here that socialising and expressing oneself can be quite hard. Your comment that you "actually find most people quite boring" ..which I appreciate is your opinion.... but I found that remark a little harsh and as I understood it, a tad superior.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 08-Jun-15 14:16:27

Not superior at all. I am, most likely, pretty boring myself. And, yes, it was an opinion, and I believe we are allowed to express opinions on GN.

I did not direct my comment at you personally. I cannot imagine why you seem to think I did. I have no idea who you are, or how boring or otherwise you might be.

Stansgran Mon 08-Jun-15 15:18:51

Because I was bored waiting for the gutters to stop overflowing I remembered DD telling me why I would never get on with SIL because I was WXYZ or something from the Myers Briggs test. So I had a go. It's quite surprising if you haven't done it.
