Thinking this would be a better name for this site, I've never read such a load of grumpy, negative, twittering posts in my life. It makes depressing reading and remind me of my late MiL for whom nothing was ever right.

Don't want to contribute to a honeymoon because you had ten Pyrex dishes and six coffee pots and that's how it ought to be? Never mind that today's young people will have to both work (until they're 70 at this rate) and struggle to pay for child care, so this might be the last carefree holiday they have until they retire.

Don't approve of the NHS One You initiative because you know it all and anyway you've no intention of changing your lifestyle, while at the same time moaning that the NHS is not performing well (due to the population eating itself into obesity)

Can't think of one positive thing to say about this government forgetting that there was 'nothing left' as truly stated in the note from the outgoing last lot.

I could go on but as I've offended almost everyone by now I'd better stop.

FHS it's getting so depressing just signing in to GN and I wonder what GNHQ think about us. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to answer to most AIBU questions with a loud, resounding YES

lights the blue touch paper and retires

No Monday's a good day. Ukulele group night, always have a laugh.

Busy practising this version of Somewhere over the Rainbow

(Not that I always know what day it is anyway.)

Badenkate/Anya, no problem, there are more on our side of the barricade atm.

MiniMouse Mon 21-Mar-16 11:23:09

Perhaps we could start a permanent thread titled 'Grumpynet' just so that posters know that's where to go to vent their grumpiness? I have a feeling that it wouldn't get many posts though because the Grumpies wouldn't know it applied to them . . . . wink grin

Move over Anya and Badenk

Yes too easy to grump! We set off for our half hour walk this morning and moaned about potholes, litter etc. After the first 15 mins I said lets just say positive things on the way back. After a little silence, I said next time I will bring a bin bag and pick the litter up rather than just moan!! It is much easier to moan than find positives perhaps that s why we do it.

Some people see the doughnut and some see the hole.
The problem with flagging up which post is grumpy and which is cheerful is that the tone switches so quickly when someone throws in a curved ball.

Jane10 Mon 21-Mar-16 11:26:52

Could we not have 'letting off steam' threads? So many people seem to say that they feel the better of a good rant/vent on here. I felt sorry for the Gran who said she'd like to go on about an NHS issue.
PS I was v grumpy yesterday as certain posts really got my goat. (Odd phrase -where does it originate?)

pompa Mon 21-Mar-16 11:28:17

Careful, we're verging on being grumpy about those that are grumpy.

NanaandGrampy Mon 21-Mar-16 11:39:00

Ive had a bit of a think about this over coffee and what I'd really like is to be to hide threads I'm not interested in. That might work for you too Anya then those that are too depressing/grumpy for you . you could hide and not be troubled again by them?

Katek Mon 21-Mar-16 11:44:26

Like on FB? You can hide posts or choose not to receive them.

NonnaW Mon 21-Mar-16 11:47:39

But it's not the threads in general that are grumpy, rather that some people can respond in a rather nasty way to something they don't agree with. Wouldn't it be best, as others have said, to just ignore the things you don't like? That old saying springs to mind - "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all"!

maturefloosy Mon 21-Mar-16 11:48:23

I think having a permanent grumpy thread is a good idea- - - then you only go on it if you feel grumpy - - and can get it off your chest - - as my grandpa used to say! smile Grumpiness is then banned from all other threads - - and if anyone is grumpy you refer them to the Grumpythread grin

kittylester Mon 21-Mar-16 11:56:36

I don't think it's Grumpnet - rather Stridentnet!!

Luckygirl Mon 21-Mar-16 11:57:26

Don't read it if you don't like it!!

grannylyn65 Mon 21-Mar-16 11:58:29

I got an awful shock the first time I innocently asked something and the ensuing debate grew arms legs toes and possibly cloned itself, then had knuckles sharply rapped. Am careful now !!

MiniMouse Mon 21-Mar-16 11:59:05

I've just reread my post and realised that the last bit could be misconstrued blush

I meant 'move over Anya and Badenk' because I'm coming to join you, not you move over to the Grumpythread! blush

Off to find a hole to crawl into . . . . .

Ana Mon 21-Mar-16 11:59:38

I wish we could 'hide' some threads too. Even though I know certain posts are going to make my blood boil, I can't resist having a look...and then I'm Grumpy!

Stansgran Mon 21-Mar-16 11:59:55

Could we have an Eeyore thread and a Tigger thread? I usually get very grumpy just reading the Times in the morning but there was a lovely picture of a baby elephant in Botswana smelling the flowers and made me happy .

rosesarered Mon 21-Mar-16 12:04:23

mind you we can't go too Pollyanna [ that could be annoying too!]

Ana Mon 21-Mar-16 12:05:57

Yes, it could turn us Grumpy!

Tizliz Mon 21-Mar-16 12:07:01

I do try to lighten up some threads, but usually fall foul of being called flippant or just plain rude and get shouted down.

Yes, I have fallen foul of that as well. The trouble is that threads can develop into pages and pages very quickly and then you start skim reading them and can miss things.

Charleygirl Mon 21-Mar-16 12:10:14

grannylyn65 I know where you are coming from- where could I possibly go wrong on a thread adding the 3 main meals I liked?! I replied to a post, did not have my head bitten off there but a nasty, snide remark was added to my reply on another post about a different subject by the same person. I was really good and did not rise to the bait. soop's kitchen is full of fun and laughter. We are never nasty to each other there.

Anya Mon 21-Mar-16 12:13:08

Just back after visiting the local garden centre (full of old people!) and surprised how this thread has grown, but de-light-ed that we can be grumpy and funny at the same time.

Perhaps that's what's been lacking - a sense of humour! I do know someone who's always grumbling but has me in stitches at the same time.

Have I hit on something here? It's not grumpiness but miserable grumpiness that's the killer hmm after all that 'Grumpy Old...' TV series was funny....wasn't it?

grannylyn65 Mon 21-Mar-16 12:24:18

I suspect miserable grumps are not very self aware!!!

Elegran Mon 21-Mar-16 12:25:35

I am just off into town to meet several other posters for a bite to eat and a natter. If the grumpier people on GN were to do more of that and less putting the world to rights and telling everyone else how wrong they are to think differently from them, it might cure some of their ill-nature.

Then again, maybe it wouldn't.

wot Mon 21-Mar-16 12:27:19

Well, I find it quite comforting to hear that others have problems too! Not schadenfruede i hope [not that I can spell it]
