A similar thing happened to my husband on holiday in Scotland but not because of a beer belly. We went for 2 weeks when my daughter was 3 months old and we had a lot of rain but still wanted to get out and about. My husband carried her in a papoose baby carrier on his front but to add further protection from the rain he did up his waterproof coat over the top of the baby carrier so basically unless you got up close and looked down inside his coat at the neck he just looked very well rounded. Whilst browsing in a gift shop we heard this little boy say Mum,Mum, look at that man he's pregnant, he's going to have a baby', he can't have been much more than 5 or six. His Mum absent mindedly said don't be silly darling then glanced over and did a double take herself, the look of surprise on her face for a fleeting moment was absolutely priceless!.

Given that a man in a panama hat usually looks a gentleman, jingl and * Ana* , neither he nor I took "umbrage" as you suggested.

I can't stand to see men in vests. Something about underwear on show in public and reminds me of Mrs Bucket Mrs Bouquet's BiL. T-shirt or naked is preferable . When the sun is out I strip off topwise in the sanctity of my own back yard but always keep a piece of modesty apparel close to hand should the window cleaner or anyone unexpected appear through the back gate

Quite, Soutra - I meant that some people might not want to think they looked like a 'Waitrose customer'.

I must ask my Waitrose contact what a Waitrose customer looks like. I've been there this morning in tee shirt and cargo pants. Oh dear!

I wonder how many of you remember 'string vests'? They were all the rage once upon a time, and a long while ago, when we had just moved into a new house, my husband was working all day in the garden in his string vest, and when he took that off, he had a beautiful diamond patterned torso!
