That at this time of year some men of any age, shape or size seem to think that it is perfectly acceptable to strip to the waist. I can live with shorts and long socks - or no socks, but there are some men out there who would be much wiser to keep their clothes on. I know, it is a seaside thing, and probably townsfolk do not suffer so much, but there are some really appalling sights around down here, particularly as I live on what is loosely termed a 'private' estate! (Not as grand as it sounds!)

I wonder how many of you remember 'string vests'? They were all the rage once upon a time, and a long while ago, when we had just moved into a new house, my husband was working all day in the garden in his string vest, and when he took that off, he had a beautiful diamond patterned torso!

I have my contacts, kitty and at least I had removed my pjs. wink

Soutra Mon 30-Jun-14 11:18:38

See pics thread

Soutra Mon 30-Jun-14 11:18:10

To paraphrase Margaret Mountford on Edinburgh University " apparently Edinburgh Waitrose is not what it used to be" grin

kittylester Mon 30-Jun-14 10:54:18

And they let you in Anno grin

annodomini Mon 30-Jun-14 10:23:35

I must ask my Waitrose contact what a Waitrose customer looks like. I've been there this morning in tee shirt and cargo pants. Oh dear!

Ana Mon 30-Jun-14 09:44:55

Quite, Soutra - I meant that some people might not want to think they looked like a 'Waitrose customer'.

Marmight Mon 30-Jun-14 08:53:02

I can't stand to see men in vests. Something about underwear on show in public and reminds me of Mrs Bucket Mrs Bouquet's BiL. T-shirt or naked is preferable grin. When the sun is out I strip off topwise in the sanctity of my own back yard but always keep a piece of modesty apparel close to hand should the window cleaner or anyone unexpected appear through the back gate wink

Given that a man in a panama hat usually looks a gentleman, jingl and * Ana* , neither he nor I took "umbrage" as you suggested.

Miceelf

A similar thing happened to my husband on holiday in Scotland but not because of a beer belly. We went for 2 weeks when my daughter was 3 months old and we had a lot of rain but still wanted to get out and about. My husband carried her in a papoose baby carrier on his front but to add further protection from the rain he did up his waterproof coat over the top of the baby carrier so basically unless you got up close and looked down inside his coat at the neck he just looked very well rounded. Whilst browsing in a gift shop we heard this little boy say Mum,Mum, look at that man he's pregnant, he's going to have a baby', he can't have been much more than 5 or six. His Mum absent mindedly said don't be silly darling then glanced over and did a double take herself, the look of surprise on her face for a fleeting moment was absolutely priceless!.

Kiora Wed 25-Jun-14 18:40:55

mice] smile smile I laughed my socks off at your post. I must stop all this joviality and go and cook tea/dinner/ supper whatever you
gransnetters call it!

Ana Wed 25-Jun-14 18:14:22

Some people might have taken umbrage at that remark!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 25-Jun-14 18:08:53

shock

Soutra Wed 25-Jun-14 18:05:37

I am so glad Mr roses maintains standards. DH wears a panama hat in the summer as he burns easily and once in Waitrose wanted their free( to card holders) magazine. The cashier waved away his offer of money for it saying "That is perfectly all right sir, you look like a Waitrose customer" smile

Nonu Wed 25-Jun-14 17:02:28

GAGA , no I didn"t , any chance of a clip!
I like a laugh !

Oh I am a meanie !

Anne58 Wed 25-Jun-14 16:45:57

roses only just seen your post! grin

But you didn't mention the highly polished brogues................. although of course "never brown in town" wink

Aka Tue 24-Jun-14 08:34:31

Not 'everyone' surely? hmm

feetlebaum Tue 24-Jun-14 08:01:47

Why am I reminded of the chap who, years ago now, hoaxed everyone into believing his campaign to put pants on animals?

Aka Tue 24-Jun-14 07:49:48

Only these were mainly Mrs Blobbys.

Aka Tue 24-Jun-14 07:49:09

Grumpa if you'd seen the sights I saw in town yesterday you'd laugh. I think it was the Mr Blobby tribute outing.

numberplease Tue 24-Jun-14 01:47:15

Grannylin, that reminded me of a photo years ago of my BIL on a beach somewhere in swimming trunks.............and black socks!

grumppa Mon 23-Jun-14 22:01:36

I work on the basis that if I don't like what I see in the mirror I keep it covered up except on the beach or in the shower. Unfortunately, as time goes by I can see myself adopting the burka.

Grannylin Mon 23-Jun-14 21:39:41

We went on holiday to India in the new year and OH actually took his socks off! shock

janerowena Mon 23-Jun-14 21:28:54

Maybe we all ought to go back to the Edwardian era at the beach and wear bathing suits over a certain age or plumpness. We could have Beach Police. After all, nightclubs refuse admission to people who offend their eyes and everyone just accepts it! Or segregated beaches. DBH&Son could be on the Fit Beach with all the fitness fanatics, I could be on the fatty beach with all the ice cream vans. I bet I would have a nicer time.
