What a husband should NEVER do!

If your wife is painting a big metal garden seat thingy that you are being given the credit for doing whilst being eaten alive by every nipping, biting bug in the garden DO NOT do the following:

1. Stand and watch.
2. Point out the bits she has missed.
3. Offer to do the easy flat bits whilst she is doing the twisted bits of metal in the most complicated swirly whirly pattern ever devised by man. I say man because no woman would design something so ridiculously curly if it was going to have to be painted at regular intervals.
4. Suggest another method of painting when she has spent several hours perfecting her technique.

If you do any or all of these things you may find that your normally placid lady disappears and you meet someone you didn't know existed and never want to meet again.

Vampire, what is MY DH doing in your garden?

rosesarered Tue 16-Jun-15 21:29:50

I wondered where he had gone.

vampirequeen Tue 16-Jun-15 21:33:23

grin

Brendawymms Tue 16-Jun-15 21:41:00

Are they ALL the same. If I see a job that needs doing I do it. My DH has to think then plan for weeks, obtain the bits needed takes another two weeks then he starts just seconds before a hot meal is due to be served. Thus I end up doing it. DH then complains "what's the rush"

merlotgran Tue 16-Jun-15 22:11:08

DH runs a mile when he spots me with paintbrush in hand (which is most days)

I think he's afraid if he stands still I'll shabby-chic him!

merlotgran Tue 16-Jun-15 22:12:25

The shabby bit would be easy but the chic might take a bit of imagination.

Mishap Tue 16-Jun-15 22:13:33

Yes indeed - my OH says that the most important thing is the preparation - this appears to include working up to the job psychologically (quite a lengthy process!), then sanding, wiping down, filling in microscopic blemishes, buying new brushes, reading up different techniques on the internet, discussing with the neighbours........ - I just pick up a brush and slap some paint on!

janerowena Tue 16-Jun-15 22:36:21

Do we all have the same OH? Is it the same man racing around the countryside?

Is that why he takes so long to get started, or do the job, or even - god forbid - finish it????

Funnygran Tue 16-Jun-15 23:04:34

Love reading these, my OH exactly. I do appreciate that he is so practical but it amuses me that he can spend all day doing something to the exclusion of everything else. Whereas I'm multi-tasking, thinking about food, other things that need doing and the mundane things! And who gets the praise for being so creative at the end of the day?

Deedaa Tue 16-Jun-15 23:11:09

It's the pointing out the bits you've missed that's the real killer grin

vampirequeen Does your's also tell you "No you don't want to do it like that!" When he has left it to you to have done 99.9% of the decorating in the house for the last 40 yrs.

Teetime Wed 17-Jun-15 09:30:42

DH still has the scars of the days when he used to say things like that and also the burden of doing it all his bloody self now!!!

Greyduster Wed 17-Jun-15 09:52:37

He should not do what mine does when I have planned to do something he has conveniently put on a back burner for the duration and say "....of course, you could do it that way - the only problem is.....". He would have the paintbrush wedged in an uncomfortable place. I'm sure A&E have seen it all before!

downtoearth Wed 17-Jun-15 10:29:21

he my OH belongs to the "you don't want to do it like that" school of thought,....he dosent pick up paint brush often, but likes to help/interfere in kitchen ....what is remarkable he tells me I don't want to do things the way I always have..he being 20 years my junior and only being together 12 years makes you wonder how I managed for the first 51 years till I met him......teaching granny to suck eggs comes to mind ..grin

shysal Wed 17-Jun-15 11:19:59

My ex DH used to wait until I had almost finished a job and then say 'You should have said, I would have done it' He never attempted any job around the house or garden.

rosesarered Wed 17-Jun-15 12:01:14

It does seem to be the norm for a lot of men to have to think about a job that needs doing, the psych-ing up bit if you like for a while before a chore is actually started. That part can take weeks!
Merlot, are you still doing all the grey shabby chic stuff around the house? My own DH is that without any work done on him.

rosesarered Wed 17-Jun-15 12:01:44

Although it has to be said, the slippers are just shabby.

loopylou Wed 17-Jun-15 16:58:36

After 19 years of DH saying he'll sort out the unfinished utility room which came with the house, I have said I'm calling the builders as soon as my private pension pot can be accessed. Suddenly he's animated about him doing it (no flipping waygrin)
If he dares to say 'I was just about to start that' he'll be under the new tiled floor!

And, because I want to redecorate the living room too Grayduster, should he dare to say that he'll be joining your DH in A+E grin

Happy days!

loopylou Wed 17-Jun-15 17:01:30

Does your DH have a twin Mishap?

The record (and the final straw!) is 15 weeks to replace a bath and washbasin and tile a minuscule 7x4 bathroom....... a DF couldn't believe how long it took!

hildajenniJ Wed 17-Jun-15 17:09:51

I have no such problems with my DH. I get a man in!!!

petallus Wed 17-Jun-15 17:19:41

A man has been here all day replacing some rotting wood at the front of the house and painting it. DH has been saying he would see to it for at least five years!

I thought it was just him but now I see he is not alone.

jeanie99 Thu 18-Jun-15 03:21:06

Over the years my husband as said he would deal with certain maintenance jobs but hasn't so I have just got someone in to deal with the jobs.
He would never ever ring anyone up to get jobs done I do it or it doesn't get done.
Some things like clearing out loft or garage if I start them he'll get involved but I think this is more of he doesn't want me to throw anything away he want to keep.
He'll also do decorating with me, does the ceilings because I sometimes feel dizzy getting up and down the steps.

vampirequeen Thu 18-Jun-15 10:35:29

Today we took the curly, whirly metal chair thingy back to the old lady's garden. She was out at the time. Later DH got a phone call thanking him profusely for all his hard work hmm

NanSue Fri 19-Jun-15 20:30:37

My DH even calls himself "Manyana Man" i.e. Why do today, what I can put off until tomorrow!
