No good reason still to vote Tory

I have been reading and watching the various speeches at the Tory conference.

Blimey what a poor show it all is. The voter totally rejected them at the last election, and I can see absolutely nothing that will bring them back, particularly the traditional Tory voter.

Tax cuts everywhere together with spending cuts.

The voter knows exactly what that will bring - another 10 miserable years resulting in zero growth, getting poorer and continuing to turn their back on our nearest neighbours.

What a wretched message they are giving.

Kemi kindly says if she gets elected i can leave a millon tax free!!!
If only🤬, she lives in lala land.

We waste too much money giving benefits to those that dont need it, most countries have a contributory health service many a means tested pension system.
Giving more to those that already have plenty is a major flaw in the UK system,, higher taxation is one way to counter that

You can already leave a million pound free of IHT

From what I understand (only read brief headlines on iPad) is that one’s home will not be including in the overall amount of your estate.

What about us poor people, didnt hear her giving us anything worthwhile.

May I gently remind you that every working person does contribute to our health service and SP via National Insurance.

I like Kemi Badenoch but she has an uphill task to get voters to give the Tories another chance at Government after the mess they made in the 14 years they were last in that position.
I think the spectres of Boris and Liz Truss are still very fresh in voter's minds too.

Liz Truss was a phenomenal disaster.

Boris Johnson, people knew who and what they were voting for (bear in mind in the U.K. you vote for your constituency MP not the prime minister)

Rishi Sunak done his best, he is still a serving MP, has set up a national charity, and by all accounts is a good constituency MP.

We have no idea if Kemi will be leader at the next GE.

Labour has so far done zilch for me, oh hang on he has increased all my business running costs…

If Badenoch was PM we'd be at war with Iran.

I didn't like the proposal Angela Rayner put forward at the Labour Party Conference of taking control properties that haven't been occupied for 6 months. Sometimes, particularly in this current housing market, it can take a while to sell a property. I'm thinking of scenarios where the second parent has died and they have inherited and are trying to sell, which can take a while if it's the sort of dwelling that might need some updating. This was mooted quite a few years ago and caused quite a lot of anxiety for those in that position then. I think it's wrong for the state to acquire properties under such circumstances when the owners, may not be living there but are having the home acquired against their wishes.

The house next door to me has been empty for 4 years….The kids have fallen out, meanwhile the house has fallen into massive disrepair.

Casdon Wed 07-Oct-26 16:08:02

You’ve lost me TerriBull, is there a connection to the thread?

I still think Badenoch is hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons, people are cynical about whether any promises politicians make are achievable at the moment, and she isn’t helping her cause by making massive promises so soon after the Tories failed to deliver last time, apologetic, low key plans, calm and sensible would have been a much better strategy for now.

Can't believe the number of deluded left wing voters on this forum, especially when the demographic must be such that most are pensioners. Any vote for Labour is a vote for the continued down grading and destruction of our wonderful nation. Most of us on here must be old enough to know, and have experienced, that socialism doesn't work, it never has and never will.

TerriBull Wed 07-Oct-26 16:24:08

I think the connection to the thread Casdon is this, "No Good Reason to Vote Tory" maybe so! However, I'm also finding, for me there maybe no good reason to vote Labour either. As outlined above, I do not approve of the state acquiring privately owned property, I can understand maybe in the cases of landlords who haven't maintained their properties and leave them abandoned. Not in the case of inherited property where those who have been left homes in a will might be trying to sell. It just smacks of that nasty "possession is 9/10ths of the law" underhand procurement

Secondly my other reasons for struggling to vote Labour, and I await the budget, but I'd go along with GG, I think they've done nothing for business.

Thirdly, I'm appalled that the growth of welfare benefit payouts outpacing the salaries of those who are working.

Mawmac Wed 07-Oct-26 16:24:44

MaizieD, I absolutely agree with you.
I'm fed up with the conflation between household and government finances/budgets.
And, I am fearful that AB is too scared of repercussions to invest properly in the country.
No end in sight to austerity and the demonisation of anyone requiring financial assistance from the state.

winterwhite Wed 07-Oct-26 16:26:25

I think KB is too pleased with herself. Too much ‘I’, not enough ‘we’. Is she trying to emulate Margaret Thatcher? And little sense of a strong united shadow cabinet behind her. Maybe I didn’t follow it all enough to justify that comment, but I certainly thought her finance man rather weak.

Not impressed by any party. Liebour, sorry Labour, tell lies, the Greens aren’t green anymore. None of them do what they were voted in for

How to say you are a Reform supporter without saying you are a Reform supporter

Yesterday we had the uncomfortable spectacle of one shadow minister announcing that he wants yo get rid of the 20mph entirely.

Since the enforcement there has been a massive 34% drop in death and injury particularly amongst children overall and Edinburgh and Hill are reporting an overwhelming 64% decrease in child casualties.

What planet are these Tories living on to want to inflict this back onto children again?

They are simply selfish. Surely that's the definition of the right? Unfortunately they are also entitled so never likely to understand that they are selfish.

Well The Labour Party brought in the NHS and thank your life that they did! They did it against a lot of opposition from the well off and from doctors and dentists who would not make the money they had been used to.

We all seem to moan about lack of prison places (no new prisons build or investment in old ones), expensive transport, high prices for gas, water. electricity, lack of affordable housing (privatisation has led to the money that should go into these basics going to shareholder profits instead). Teachers, Police, NHS staff, prison officers leaving their professions in droves - no investment in Public Services.

These Public Service workers are what we depend on - have we forgotten who we needed to go to work even during the COVID epidemic. These Public Service Public Services we all use - gas, electricity, water - need to be in public control to ensure money is reinvested in maintenance and expansion - not expanding the bank accounts of shareholders.

Perhaps you’re a fan of “austerity”.

I can assure you that having spent 13 out of my 14 years in the Civil Service, under the Tories, and can confirm many services were cut to the bone in many areas (during this time I was Chair of Finance and Deputy-Chair of a local primary school).

I was personally worse off year on year with my salary frozen for 10 years, yet my NI and pensions payments rising year on year.

At the primary school I governed (not part of an Academy) we watched with horror our healthy school budget decrease year on year and the services received from our local authority diminish, year on year, with the schools support services haemorrhaging staff til there were just two left to support our 26+ schools (unitary authority).

Even today at my daughter’s primary school (teacher not pupil), she regularly buys her own supplies and teaching assistants are down to their lowest levels.

It’s a deprived area and has many Special Educational Needs pupils, but due to cuts in their almost bankrupt LA, they’ve cut the staff required to assess children, so no extra money given to bolster school budgets in order to employ the staff needed to give both pupils and teachers the support they so richly deserve and require.

It’s not the Labour Party who’ve wrecked our country.

It’s not the politics of envy, it’s not even the division that the likes of Farage and Lowe have created, it’s sheer greed.

The greed that encourages people to build wealth, yet not to “share”.

The ridiculous myth that working all the hours god sends results in a high standard of living.

We are still a society of “haves” and “have nots”, and it’s not as simple as get a job!

Many many of those not doing well financially have jobs, full time jobs, work very hard and it’s those middle salary, hard working folks that teach, nurse, can our food, deliver our food, in many cases grow our food, cut our hair, clean our streets, bake our bread, many many jobs which leave families simply “getting by”, whilst those at the very top “hide” their money offshore or spend shedloads outside of our country.

People who create wealth inside this country aren’t always the people spending it here, inside our own economy.

It’s the “little” people who do that.

Whilst those in our privately owned utilities and services give lip service to its users and pay fat dividends to shareholders, take huge bonuses and leave us with tainted water, old, dirty public transport which rarely runs on times, postal services where we receive our hospital appointment notifications after our appointment has passed, and so many other failings.

Yet here we are, blaming people arriving on boats for all our struggles.

Frankly, it’s pathetic and not good enough!

Oreo Wed 07-Oct-26 16:55:32

No, selfishness isn’t the definition of the Conservative Party.

Cringeworthy stuff from KB - flattered by a ‘nice outfit, nice speech’ email and reverting to herself as the no nonsense mummy to her party. Geezo - talk about paddling backwards.
