Sir Ranulph Fiennes

I heard yesterday and upset me to read that Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is classed as the greatest living explorer is being kept in a care home "unlawfully deprived of his liberty", being forced to wear sunglasses and a hat in case someone recognises him. Kept in a care home illegally under a false name. I know he is suffering from Parkinson's disease.

I had the pleasure of attending one of his lectures a few years ago and was able to speak to him, he was such a humble and gracious man and I shall always remember our conversation.

His wife is in charge of his care and she is saying her husband is ex-SAS whose life might be in danger from extremists.

But his family and friends very upset over the circumstances and want to take the matter further, basically blaming his wife.

I just truly hope she is trying to protect her husband but articles are not really suggesting that and that his wife is accountable for the present problem.

Has anyone else read any more on this or further news?

On BBC News the Cheshire police released a statement saying there are no safeguarding issues with Ranulph Fiennes.

merlotgran Tue 29-Sept-26 09:45:08

The DM is reporting today that Sir Ranulph is now back home at his Shropshire farmhouse which is protected by high security gates.
Apparently he is living in a modular building with another one alongside for his carer.

Whatever sort of life is this poor man living?

Icanhandthemback - I’m not going to say anymore other than it is out there for the public to read. Her ex-husband’s name is also mentioned.

Well not according to my internet search where it consistently says nothing is known. A link would be a good start if it is public information.

For those who don’t read the Daily Mail.

It’s supposedly is Ranulf on his own property.

I think it is terrible that this family's private business is being discussed throughout the newspapers and folk that know absolutely nothing about the personal circumstances of Sir Ranulph are giving their opinion. (I realise I am also doing so.) She is his wife os 20 years and has POA so can act on his behalf. I suspect he may have dementia as well as Parkinsons and his wife has been moving him to try to protect his privacy. There's more to this than meets the eye.

This.

The rest is over the fence gossip.

Bearing in mind that the Cheshire police have released a statement saying there are no safe guarding issues, IMO Ranulf and his wife should be left in peace which appears to be what they both want.

I can understand why someone known for his incredible achievements would want any physical and mental deterioration to remain private, even from family and close friends.

Could it be that none of this is true?

The sister of his first wife was on NewsNight last night, it is true, she was so concerned about him that she managed to identify the care home he was living in and booked herself in for respite care. She managed to speak to him but soon after he was transferred to another home. It will be on BBC iPlayer if you want to watch it.

Casdon Tue 29-Sept-26 11:37:11

The most important issue is whether this is what he wants, or not. If he doesn’t want to see anybody, that should be respected. If he does, his wife must allow that to happen. Presumably behind the scenes there is more going on with social services safeguarding team than we are aware of.

JenniRen Tue 29-Sept-26 11:47:40

His wife apparently has LPOA. If what she is doing is in accordance with what Sir Ranulph wants, what he stated when he was of sound mind, then why does she not make a public statement and reassure everyone?
Her actions so far have done nothing to alleviate the suspicions and anxiety of his friends and family. It is alleged that the Care Inspectorate of Wales declared Sir Ranulph was being unlawfully kept in care homes and unable to consent to his care or treatment.
Is he receiving the correct medical care if he is not registered with a GP, as reported?

I think it is terrible that this family's private business is being discussed throughout the newspapers and folk that know absolutely nothing about the personal circumstances of Sir Ranulph are giving their opinion.
Yes, but there are enough questions from friends, family and officials for his wife to answer and as long as she maintains this secrecy then the questions will continue.

It is quite a tricky balance, particularly as it is coming from family and friends who have chosen to go public, I remember when there was a whole conspiracy theory about Britney being controlled, I thought they were quite bonkers and it turned out to be true.
I have read a lot of the allegations from the friend of Fiennes and to be honest if he is wrong I would have thought he would be in a difficult situation in terms of libel.

Agreed.
A friend of mine who had always been very sociable didn't want to see anyone after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. He was embarrassed about being seen in such a poorly state

The only person who needs are paramount and whose wellbeing and safety is the priority is Sir Ranulph Fiennes- not the wishes or preferences of the wider friends and family or personal wishes of his wife IF she is making decisions not in his best interests.

Cheshire Police has issued a statement that Ranulph is in an appropriate facility, with appropriate oversight, no care concerns etc and no safeguarding concerns. That was read out to the ex sister in law on BBC programme last night by Victoria Derbyshire.

No one has the right to visit a person in a care facility if it is not in their best interests. Visiting is a privilege, welcomed and encouraged if it enhances the patient's wellbeing but it is not a blanket entitlement. It can be legitimately discouraged if it upsets the patient. Estrangement in families can leave painful memories and triggering such memories can cause distress.

The estranged son seemingly wants PoA to be stripped from Ranulph's wife ( his mother) to be given to those who have "his best interests at heart". He overtly infers his estranged mother does not have Ranulph's well-being and best interests at heart.

However as the police have confirmed Ranulph is in an appropriate facility and there are no concerns about his care, safeguarding or otherwise- it appears his wife is making decisions that support his well being. No concerns about his wife's decision making have been found by any authorities to date, yet of course they can't disclose confidential case detail. So speculation runs rife in the media. There seemingly is no evidence or legal basis to remove PoA from his wife. She currently has legal rights to make certain decisions about her husband's care.

Any authority and any registered care worker who discloses any confidential information about Ranulph's care or even care location lays themselves open to regulatory process and could lose their jobs.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 12:15:48

I agree Smileless2012 and eddicat78. It is not uncommon, in usual family circumstances, for people to individuals to not want to see people and the knowingly withdraw as they become increasingly dependent in care facilities. Even more common is family's that have experienced estrangement.

About three months before she died, my favourite aunt summoned me "for a visit"; it turned out, it was to say a last goodbye. We knew her cancer was terminal. She had decided her "end of life" was to be strictly private, shared only with her children.

She asked me to honour this last request and promise I would not visit her again, ever, in the wretched final stages of a cancer our family knows all too well. She asked all her closest friends the same thing. I promised, and kept it. We all did.

It sounds to me as if Ralph Fiennes may have made a similar last request for absolute privacy and discretion (which extends to his wife, and the nursing home) .

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 14:34:19

One thing jumps out in that 20 year old DM article Granless - Sir Ranulph publicly stated We have nothing to say about our personal life and we ask you to respect this. If you want to talk about my expeditions, fine, but anything to do with private family life, then no

The negativity towards his wife and his relationship with his wife began over 20 years ago- it's not new. He found love with his second wife and they had a daughter together 20 years ago. He said this clearly in response to the negativity expressed towards his current wife and their relationship then- 20 years ago.

The priority is Ranulph’s health, well being and respecting his choices- now - just as it was 20 years ago.

Oreo Tue 29-Sept-26 14:38:19

Unless of course they are not his choices.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 14:43:23

Anyone can speculate that- but equally Ranulph may be making his choices clear now as he did all those years ago.

Equally he may have made an Advanced statement on such matters in ant of the intervening years when he had mental capacity ( that is if he lacks capacity now). We can but speculate.

Oreo Tue 29-Sept-26 14:48:13

The tone of language used by his wife to the King’s equerry leaves me feeling uneasy tbh.
I would speculate that he is being isolated.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 14:50:04

Fair enough- that's your speculative opinion.

Oreo Tue 29-Sept-26 14:52:01

It is 😃

In which case, like your aunt, would he not have announced this to his family and friends?

Is this his own home with his wife and a carer?

And close family and friends are also speculating.

It is not just chat on social media.

Smileless2012 Tue 29-Sept-26 16:28:17

IMO any speculation by his family and friends should be kept private.
