Sir Ranulph Fiennes

I heard yesterday and upset me to read that Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is classed as the greatest living explorer is being kept in a care home "unlawfully deprived of his liberty", being forced to wear sunglasses and a hat in case someone recognises him. Kept in a care home illegally under a false name. I know he is suffering from Parkinson's disease.

I had the pleasure of attending one of his lectures a few years ago and was able to speak to him, he was such a humble and gracious man and I shall always remember our conversation.

His wife is in charge of his care and she is saying her husband is ex-SAS whose life might be in danger from extremists.

But his family and friends very upset over the circumstances and want to take the matter further, basically blaming his wife.

I just truly hope she is trying to protect her husband but articles are not really suggesting that and that his wife is accountable for the present problem.

Has anyone else read any more on this or further news?

This all sounds rather odd. I'm no conspiracy theorist but I think there has to be much more to the "story" than meets the eye. Misinformation has been around for as long as humanity has and, with the availability of all kinds of digital facilities now, a whole bunch of claims and counter-claims coming out of nowhere makes me hold off from taking the media "reportage" (and the concomitant speculation on websites like this) as unadulterated fact. Maybe it's because, having spent a lot of years as a researcher, I like to have a few verifiable references from original sources before I swallow it down whole.

I can quite understand why Ranulph would request that friends and family don’t visit, he lived life as a much loved public figure whose chief attributes were his sheer strength and tenacity when out adventuring as an explorer. Now he is much older and in ill health, and doesn’t want to be remembered this way.

Fallingstar Tue 29-Sept-26 16:45:23

Is very sad though that he wants to isolate in this way.

If he does. It's sad and somehow sends out a message that Parkinson's or similar diseases are something to be ashamed of and hidden away.
Some of us may have family or friends with Parkinson's or other diseases and the thought of hiding them away from everyone, unless they had expressly wished that themselves, is surprising. Added to which, it could be counter-productive for the person themselves.

His sisterinlaw says differently.
She says she pretended to need care in order to see him once and he was so happy to see her and asked that friends would visit.

His cousin, Joseph Fiennes, was reported to have said the same, that he was happy to see him when he visited but that he raised concerns about his welfare months later when he was moved and cut off from friends and family.

But he hasn’t!

The tone of language used by his wife to the King’s equerry leaves me feeling uneasy tbh.
I would speculate that he is being isolated.

I found her response hard to swallow, in fact more than a bit hysterical. Maybe as somebody suggested upthread she does have a problem?
She has made some wild claims
Sir Ranulph Fiennes's wife, Louise Millington-Cotes, reportedly alleged to friends and in a regulatory filing that King Charles hated her husband and that Queen Camilla sent helicopters to fly over their property to intimidate them.
These claims emerged from reports detailing how King Charles attempted to reach out and check on the wellbeing of his long-time friend Sir Ranulph, only to be rebuffed by Louise Millington-Cotes, who holds lasting power of attorney

The only thing is if you look at the main protagonist ( the friend rather than the stepson) on X, he seems a little bit worrying to say the least.

The King and Sir Ranulph have been friends for far longer than Louise Millington-Cotes has known her husband.
Do you think Queen Camilla was flying one of the helicopters herself? 👩‍✈️

It all sounds very peculiar.

Fallingstar Tue 29-Sept-26 18:03:42

I admit it does sound peculiar, but what can be done if the police say there are no concerns with safeguarding.
My DH had a stroke and is disabled cognitively as well as physically, but having visitors is so important for his memory and mood. Sometimes he can’t face it which is fine but when he has a good day I invite people over.
Not sure why Ranulph is being isolated if he would rather see people, as reported by others. I think it is good for any of as we get older, if suffering from a life changing illness, to see people when we feel up to it.
If Ranulphhas dementia as well as Parkinson’s he could suffer from paranoia, my mother was like this, and she really wouldn’t see people because she imagined they were stealing her stuff or trying to kill her.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 18:13:42

Paranoia, hallucinations, patterns of behaviour that can pose a risk to self or others, psychological and emotional distress sadly are not unusual symptoms in some progressive long term conditions like PD and Dementia. All of those can be triggered by past memories or unhappy events.

If the police say he is well, in an appropriate setting and no safeguarding concerns there is no evidence his wife has harmed him in any way as a result of her PoA.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 18:26:44

Crikey- helicopters at dawn reportedly alleged! 😅.

Sir Ranulph met and married his wife and they have an adult child together- who has not gone public with her views. The step son has admitted he is also estranged from his step sister.

Most people meet other people before getting married so technically have known them longer. Not sure what that has to do with the price of eggs though in this situation 🤷‍♀️

JenniRen Tue 29-Sept-26 20:06:15

Most people are friends with others before they meet someone and marry so of course it's likely that Sir Ranulph, who was 61 when he remarried, would have longstanding friends. Under normal circumstances, a spouse would keep old friends and family up-to-date if their husband or wife became ill or no longer wished to see anyone.
However, if this is not the case, then it is not surprising they are all concerned about his welfare.

As no statement has been forthcoming, then speculation and rumours will continue about the welfare of an elderly and frail person.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 20:27:33

In normal circumstances a spouse would respect their husband or wives wishes. In normal circumstances a spouse may well keep others up to date with information even if their spouse no longer wishes anyone to visit - that is family and friends they are in contact with.

There has been estrangement and ill will sadly in this family however.

There police provided an update however that he is well and no safeguarding issues in an appropriate care facility. The issue is not the update which is news for them and reassuring. Their wish is to visit and the step sons also has publicly stated he wishes to strip his estranged mother of PoA rights. Thats fighting talk and he’s seeking crowd funding for litigation.

Messy and between the parties at the end of the day and Ranulph is entitled to privacy, dignity and confidentiality meanwhile. Public speculation not likely to stop however I guess.

🤔 Were the police accompanied by a social worker qualified in adult social care and safeguarding?

Casdon Tue 29-Sept-26 20:49:22

Social Services are the lead agency for safeguarding, and work in collaboration with the police routinely in safeguarding vulnerable adults, so it’s highly likely that they were involved - the police would not issue a statement otherwise.

LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 23:09:25

Those making safeguarding allegations eg step son et al are not qualified social workers and neither are they in possession of current facts about Ranulph’s current confidential care matters. The police are in possession of such facts following their investigation so were in a position to make a public statement.

Impossible for the police to investigate safeguarding concerns about an individual and without finding out the facts. Impossible to find out the facts without consulting those involved with statutory safeguarding and statutory care responsibilities involved in Ranulph’s current care. The clues are in the words “investigation”, “facts” , “statutory” and the statement “appropriate” care facility ( all appropriate care facilities statutorily must have a designated safeguarding lead to ensure the organisation adheres to its statutory safeguarding responsibilities).

The police public statement provided the facts that there are no safeguarding concerns 😊

Family and friends have no automatic rights unless they have been legally passed to them. Why do people think they have?

DaisyAnneReturns Wed 30-Sept-26 06:46:33

Totally agree with LemonJam Tue 29-Sept-26 23:09:25. Most of thus thread is the reporting ov malicious gossip.

eazybee Wed 30-Sept-26 08:14:58

Family and friends do not have rights and it is difficult to overcome a Power of Attorney. They do however appear to have legitimate concerns, some of which were raised officially by a manager (I believe) in one of the many care homes Ranulph Fiennes passed through, who was familiar with the circumstances, particularly that of medication and registration with a local Doctor. As I posted earlier people do attempt to limit contact with friends and relations and it arouses suspicions.

Esmay Wed 30-Sept-26 09:25:23

Poor man .
How horrible.
A lady from my church suddenly couldn't cope and has been put in a home totally against her wishes.

LemonJam Wed 30-Sept-26 14:49:55

Are you talking about the care home in Wales 2 years ago eazybee.

The wife gave instructions to the care home relating to Ralph's day to day activities of daily living. When care home manager raised concerns about these instructions so contacted the health regulator. When the regulator, Care Inspecortate Wales. looked into the matter it confirmed in writing that in fact the home did not have the correct protocols in place for these daily activities. Ranulph moved from that care facility to another....hardly surprising in those circumstances.

The step son is today stating the Cheshire Police have contacted him and he has raised his concerns with the police so this gives him hope- but at the same time states that the Police statement was "slapdash" and "really disappointing" 🤷‍♀️ He states there was no DoLS in place 2 years ago thus Ranulph is being deprived of his liberties. That would be a safeguarding concern.

I am beginning to think the step son is not less concerned about Ranulph's welfare, ie CP has confirmed that he is being cared for in an appropriate facility, with appropriate oversight and there are no safeguarding concerns. But more concerned about getting his own way, seeking media spot light, undermining his estranged mother and now complaining about Cheshire Police.

If Ranulph has capacity he is able to make decisions for himself. If he lacks capacity his wife and PoA may well ahem also applied for DoLs over the past 2 years. If a DoLs is in place- care staff MUST deliver care his best interests. All residents in a care setting have a holistic assessment including psychological and emotional car needs and aspects such as visiting.
