Polite Driving

I have decided, due to increasing lack of courtesy on the roads that I will only signal ‘thank you’ if I have to negotiate an obstruction by driving on the other side of the road.
If I continue on my side and car coming towards me can’t proceed because of cars parked on their side I’ve decided it’s unnecessary to thank them for letting me continue my journey 😂
I will always thank someone who stops to let me through their side.
How petty is this? 🤭

I signal thank you to most drivers, whether the obstruction is my side or theirs . It drives me nuts when drivers ignore you and sail through .

Mopsie, you are driving to standard driving guidance ie obstruction on other side of road and your side is clear you should be able to proceed. Note the "should be ". Some drivers think they own all the road.

I find it petty. Courtesy on the road is diminishing. Surely, we don't need to add to it. Signal with a smile!

That’s my attitude, plus having lived in my area for 33 years I’m likely to encounter someone I know .

Just wave. It won't kill you.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 09-Oct-26 17:15:27

I wave a thank you to drivers that let me out, I wave to drivers I let out.

I thank drivers in car parks, I thank drivers who wait if I am reverse parking into a space on a road (parallel parking).

It doesn’t take any of my time, it’s just being polite 🤷‍♀️

I always wave to drivers who stop to let me cross on a zebra crossing. It costs nothings and oils the wheels of civilisation.

I wave and nod to all and sundry - manners cost nowt. I’ve been waved at today and had a thumbs up from a chap driving exactly the same car as mine (a limited edition, style and colour, so not many around). On the school run, 30 odd years ago, DD1 actually thought I knew all those I waved to or who waved to me!

Thank you, as a driver I can assure you it is appreciated.

I always wave and smile at those I have stopped who then cross the crossing, and I always smile and thank the drivers who, stop for me when I am a pedestrian on a crossing 😺👋

My DS who was about 3 once said mummy you know a lot of people . We lived in South London where lots of the roads have cars parked both sides . So a lot of giving way to other vehicles.

I’ve loved it when sometimes over the years young children have acknowledged me when I stop for them at crossings. Usually cheeky little boys who light up my life when they do it. Going off at a tangent but a young girl walked past me last week and said ‘ I like your hat’. So I told her I’d inherited it from my son who had worn it at Disneyland as a child and it was well travelled. It made my day because I often chat with adults on my walks but not usually children ( she was with her family). I’m debating whether to let my son take it to Disneyland when he takes his children there at half term but I’m so worried that they’ll lose it. Some things, like driving, are so impersonal so it’s nice to connect with people. My partner who, as a rep has done a lot of driving over the years, says thank you out loud if someone raises their hand to him.

Do you by any chance live, or drive in Leigh on Sea.
Drivers there are past masters at ignorant driving.

Tenko Fri 09-Oct-26 17:50:11

Petra the ignorant drivers in my area are the yummy mummies in their SUVs and 4x4s . They think they own the road and never thank you if you give way or let them out at a junction .

I think the parking on roads, with wobbly lines for a free for all up the middle, is one of the biggest changes I am noticing after our 20 years in France.
