All these old brands are still up there with the best and even though I live far away in Australia I still buy them. We have our own brands but I think those old originals are just the best . Oh, and Birds custard powder, too. What brands from way back when do you still like and buy?
The only thing that I don’t really like is the British salad cream, horrible taste and I think we follow more the French recipes with mayonnaise.

When I was Staff Nurse in London back in the 60’s,we always had buttered toast with Heinz sandwich spread on at coffee break.I bought some recently and it tasted vile! horrid texture and vinegary, what a disappointment.

ViceVersa

I always have Colman's mustard powder in the cupboard, because it makes such a difference to cheese dishes. I always have both mayonnaise and salad cream though - I like to add a bit of both when I make things like egg mayo or tuna mayo.

I don’t like the taste of Colman’s, and keep meaning to try Dijon to see if I prefer it.
My abiding memory of Colman’s is my granny always making us bathe our feet in hot ( very hot!) water and mustard if we had got soaked in the rain.

Colmans,
Marmite,
Bisto powder,
Lyles golden syrup,
Heinz tomato ketchup,
Daddies brown sauce
All just as good as ever imo

Bisto gravy powder for us. Its nickname is ‘everyone gravy’ as it doesn’t contain MSG which gives DH a migraine. Also, strangely, it doesn’t contain beef, so fine for vegetarians.
We actually prefer Tesco tomato sauce to Heinz but it has to be Heinz tomato soup.

I don't use any sauces, prefer to taste the food. I do agree though that canned tomato soup has to be Heinz.

I go to a small local shop to get Bisto because they don’t have it in supermarkets. Ours is Gravox but it isn’t a patch on Bisto. I do have to pay twice as much for it , I suppose because of the import costs, but it is worth it. A little touch of my childhood ! I also like Robertsons ( or is it Robinsons?) mincemeat for mince pies.

Has anyone tried Stokes Tomato Sauce & Brown Sauce? They come in small bottles but are really delicious.

Coleman's mustard is in our cupboard, mayonnaise in our refrigerator. Nobody eats salad cream, here. I make tomato soup using tinned tomatoes.

I have also made tomato soup but for some reason it never quite tastes like Heinz.

Fradders, where did you find Heinz sandwich spread? I've been looking for it for ages.
I prefer salad cream to mayonnaise and always have a bottle in the fridge. I use Coleman's mustard both powder and ready made on a weekly basis, it's DH that eats the Branston pickle I have to be in the mood before I have it with anything. As for Birds custard powder, I just bought a new tin a couple of weeks ago.

I think I got sandwhich spread from poundland.

Cucumber spread was a milder version.

Agree - it's got to be proper Marmite for me. In fact, I've just ordered two big tubs of it.

Branston pickle (I like the taste) and Colman's mustard powder- like ViceVersa I add it to all my cheese dishes, cheese sauces/cheese scones/cheese biscuits etc to enhance the flavour.

I rarely buy it nowadays, but when a particular recipe calls for either treacle or golden syrup - Lyles in a tin with the golden lion on the front.

MissAdventure Wed 03-Jun-26 15:57:17

Sweet picalilly.
Not sure how to spell it, but i sure know how to eat it

Elusivebutterfly Wed 03-Jun-26 17:18:45

Heinz beans, as well as soup and ketchup, do have a flavour of their own. I do find the beans too sweet now.

BoggledMind Wed 03-Jun-26 17:34:29

My choices are similar to those already posted.

Heinz tomato soup
HP brown sauce
Heinz BBQ sauce (classic)
Heinz tomato ketchup
Kellogg's cornflakes
Bisto gravy granules
Yorkshire tea

We have tried supermarkets' own versions / cheaper brands of the above products, but, for us, the big name brands do taste the best. For other food items, we're happy to stay away from well known brands.

Slimming World allege that their tomato soup tastes exactly like Heinz.
INGREDIENTS
2 tins of chopped tomatoes
1 tin of baked beans
4 small pickled onions (or one large one), chopped in half
1/2 pint vegetable stock
a pinch of salt & pepper
1 tsp Worcester sauce
1/2 tsp sweetener
INSTRUCTIONS
Put all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to boil.
As soon as the soup boils, reduce the heat to the lowest and allow to simmer.
Cover and leave for 15 mins to simmer gently.
Once cooled slightly, add to a blender and blitz until the mixture is completely smooth.
Can be kept in the fridge in a sealed container for up to one week.

Like Falling Star but with Mayo, please.

tbh any brown sauce will do, but Branstons always tastes better than generic sandwich pickles.
DH buys expensive pickles in tiny jars from farmshop, & I try to eat them (he has one spoonful then ignores) but it's a relief when they're gone & I can eat my Branston again.

We always have a bottle of Lea & Perrins on the go to perk up mince and tatties!

I still use Heinz Salad Cream but am convinced it tastes more vinegary and watery than before. My friend says the manufacturers swore the recipe would stay the same. Mmm .. I wonder.

Greyduster Wed 03-Jun-26 20:24:58

Here in Sheffield we eschew Lee and Perrins in favour of the local wonder that is Henderson’s Relish. It is the stuff of legend here and, opinions will differ, but anything Lee and Perrins can do, Hendo’s can do better😉! Rumour has it that it is finding favour with a wider audience too, these days.

Wyllow3 Wed 03-Jun-26 20:40:34

Henderson’s Relish 👍
Real marmite 👍
Sainsburys Organic Mayonnaise 👍
Dijon or whole grain mustard 👍
Mini Gherkins 👍

None of the others mentioned

I got it in Sainsbury’s.You can also order on the Heinz website.

Birds custard is okay but I've always made my own custard from cornflour mixed with sugar and vanilla in milk .
I don't usually bother with the yellow food colouring .
The one product that I really miss and can't replicate is Panyan pickle.
Mayonnaise is so versatile.
I've never liked Heinz salad cream .
It' s over sweet.
