All these old brands are still up there with the best and even though I live far away in Australia I still buy them. We have our own brands but I think those old originals are just the best . Oh, and Birds custard powder, too. What brands from way back when do you still like and buy?
The only thing that I don’t really like is the British salad cream, horrible taste and I think we follow more the French recipes with mayonnaise.

She just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwhich.
And she said "Do you come from a land down under?" smile

Branston pickle - tick
heinz tomato - tick - no other will do
marmite - tick - again no other will do
hp sauce - tick - not used often but no other will do
birds custard powder - tick - but in the sachets you make up with water!
heinz tomato soup - i don't like tomato soup but their other soups are OK but I wouldn't buy other brand (same with baked beans - heinz are the best)
blancmange powder - tick - i get mine online from greenscakes.co.uk - they sell them individually and I usually have 3 of each flavour in my store
Hartley jellies - they still do them but not in all the flavours they used to
salad cream? I haven't bought that for years although I might as mayonnaise isn't quite the same in an egg and salad cream sandwich!

Marmite
HP sauce
Colman's mustard
Heinz tomato soup

My dad used to like a drink of Bovril but I haven't seen that for years.

I confess I like salad cream, I've got a bottle in the fridge now.

I was very disappointed when I bought Vegemite. After hearing so much about it. Heard some ladies chatting excitedly about some Australian biscuits on sale in Sainsbury’s . Similar size to Penguin biscuits.

Coleman's mustard is in our cupboard, mayonnaise in our refrigerator. Nobody eats salad cream, here. I make tomato soup using tinned tomatoes.

I have also made tomato soup but for some reason it never quite tastes like Heinz.

Slimming World allege that their tomato soup tastes exactly like Heinz.
INGREDIENTS
2 tins of chopped tomatoes
1 tin of baked beans
4 small pickled onions (or one large one), chopped in half
1/2 pint vegetable stock
a pinch of salt & pepper
1 tsp Worcester sauce
1/2 tsp sweetener
INSTRUCTIONS
Put all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to boil.
As soon as the soup boils, reduce the heat to the lowest and allow to simmer.
Cover and leave for 15 mins to simmer gently.
Once cooled slightly, add to a blender and blitz until the mixture is completely smooth.
Can be kept in the fridge in a sealed container for up to one week.

It really does! Unless I am making the above, it has to be Heinz although Dh prefers Tesco's home brand.

I also prefer:
Robinsons Barley Water;
Roses Lime Cordial.

Branston baked beans are sooo much better than Heinz. Give them a try! And nothing bets their pickle IMO. Also no substitute for HP sauce although one bottle lasts for ages.

In all honesty, I don't think I've ever eaten a Heinz product that I've enjoyed and I avoid the brand. Most of their foods seem overly and inappropriately sweet and taste vaguely of something chemical. Their tomato soup is a particular dislike but I'm a bit nuts and have a massive tomato soup session every August when tomatoes are plentiful. About 15 to 20 litres gets frozen to eat during the coming year and nobody's ever said they'd prefer a tin, please.

Kelloggs Cornflakes. One of the few brands I've never found a substitute for !

I have just bought some jars of Bovril as I understand the company has been taken over by an American company and I am thinking it might go the way as Cadbury. ie down hill. British is Best.

I like mayo except for on a corned beef sandwich when it has to be salad cream

Only Brandon’s out of this list for me, with bubble & squeak and cold cuts of meat on a Monday 🤗😃

JamesandJon33 Thu 04-Jun-26 17:04:59

Who ‘s Brandon ?

I have two framed photos of the old Bisto advert alsoMackenzies Biscuits advert

Greyduster Thu 04-Jun-26 20:46:04

Oh yes! Rose’s Lime Juice cordial. Always a bottle in my kitchen and no other brand is comparable. The first commercially produced (since 1868] concentrated fruit cordial. Pricey but worth it.

Greciangirl Thu 04-Jun-26 22:09:20

Clawdy.
I do the same thing with tuna occasionally.

Jules59 Thu 04-Jun-26 22:42:19

I miss Pan-Yan pickle - anyone else remember it?

MissAdventure Thu 04-Jun-26 22:43:23

Cor, yes!
I loved that.

Doodledog Thu 04-Jun-26 22:59:15

Oh yes - I'd forgotten about that.

MissAdventure Thu 04-Jun-26 23:00:47

It was very pickle ish.
Without being too strong.

WithNobsOnIt Thu 04-Jun-26 23:07:58

Proper jars of mixed pickled. With decent chunks of cauliflower.
Old fashioned Lucozade. You know the one with the wrapper on it.

Robinson Lemon and Barley Water
and and Roses Lime Juice Cordial
Modern versions unrecognisable.

Dreft Washing Powder.

Miss them all.
Boo boo!

I was quite enjoying taking about pickle, to be honest.
I particularly like it with Spam.
Reported.

I replaced my much missed Panyan with Sharwood's mango pickle .
The recipe for Panyan is curried-that's probably why I loved it so much !
Branston will never replace it .
