I believe mainly from Eritrea and Sudan.

Be interesting to see how many migrant supporters on here offer to take them into their homes!

If it’s the same as Ukrainian scheme you will get paid about £380 a month.

Getting ready for the usual excuses - haven’t got a spare room, can’t afford it, I live in a flat, I am too old, my second cousin twice removed lives with me etc etc. 🤣

I’m busy that week.

Directly from the Times article

"Shabana Mahmood, the home secretary, will announce next week a Ukrainian-style sponsorship scheme for households and communities to bring thousands of refugees to the UK from conflict zones around the world.
Applications for the new safe and legal routes for refugees will open this autumn, The Times has been told.

The Home Office is understood to be planning to resettle more than 10,000 under the new community sponsorship scheme by the end of the decade, although the home secretary will not name a target.

So the figures will be around only £10.000

For how many years have we demanded safe and legal routes and only people who meet the criteria for refugees where people are assessed before they set out to travel

in order to counter irregular migration

I suggest its a good idea to have assessment in the country people are leaving not boat people turning up

and furthermore we wait for the official Government announcement and its details before starting yet another anti-incomer thread.

For example, they may be able to start work immediately under the scheme, we just don't know yet.

If this is to happen the government will need to have a huge number of extra GPs, medical centres and hospitals etc up and running before they are allowed to enter this country. If not the waiting lists to see someone medically qualified will quadruple!

I can only talk about my own experience. We have had two Ukranian families living with us . The first family of 4 came in 2022 and stayed 8 months. Now live in a rented house nearby, both parents work FT, the two children are well settled at school. We see them regulsrly - we babysit for them, help out in school holidays and share meals together on occasions.
Our second family came this year - a mum and daughter. The mum is working 22 hours a week and the 9 year old is well settled in school. They hope to move on when possible.
Both experiences have been enriching and we are so glad we have done it. It has been hard work but so very worthwhile.

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), says the average workload per full time GP is about 2,300 patients.

So, at this rate me2u we will need the huge number of 4.3 extra full time GPs to cover this.

Obviously I'm aware that we need more GPs as it is though. The RCGP is already calling for many more.

Your ‘usual excuses’ are reasons, not excuses.
I am not against properly controlled immigration. But, I am 75, live in a house with no spare bedroom and having to share my home with anyone is a scary scenario. I don’t have the money or energy to support anyone.
Would you expect me to welcome a young man from Sudan into my home?

People were happy to accommodate Ukrainians because they knew they were fleeing a war, they were mainly women and children as the men had to stay in Ukraine and fight. They also have a culture similar to ours.

I helped out a Ukrainian family who were given social housing. I took them a nearly new double mattress, clothes airer, kitchen gadgets, cutlery, bedding etc. All they had when they arrived were a few clothes and two baby buggies. Other locals rallied round and within a few days they had everything they needed.

I’m taking my lead from Ronan Keating on this thread. You say it best….

That will pretty much sound the death knell of this Government, irrespective of who is PM. I am not anti-migrant. I have no issue with families relocating here for a better life. However, the amount of single young men concerns me greatly. Many of their cultures do not respect or value women. They bring those beliefs with them and we read about many sexually motivated crimes committed against girls and young women. It does not bode well for our country.

Why are you so consistently unpleasant about people who are different to yourself Primrose

It must be very tiring.

These schemes ( on a smaller scale) have existed for quite some time.

I am never unpleasant greyfur. I say what I think but I do so politely.

I look forward to hearing of the experiences of people who are constantly telling us how to behave towards migrants, and who obviously will be first on the list to offer residence in their own homes.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 27-Jun-26 09:41:24

We can’t deal or manage the influx we have.
Why encourage more? Doesn’t make sense to me plus we don’t have the necessary infrastructure to support more people at present.

I’d rather the government got cracking sorting out the huge backlog of asylum seekers already with us. Maybe by employing more teams of ‘processors’. That’d be a start. We obviously can’t keep up yet new arrivals rock up every day.

What a shambles.

Macaydia Sat 27-Jun-26 09:41:27

What about young British citizens who cant afford their own homes? Is there a scheme for that?

AGAA4 Sat 27-Jun-26 09:46:29

What a very unpleasant thread.

I’ll await the details.

Sudan is widely considered the most severe war torn country and the world's largest humanitarian crisis and Eritrea threatens to merge with the already devastating civil war in Sudan.

Well done mumofmadboys for taking Ukrainian refugees into your home 👏 and offering support. There will be those that come forward similarly to help refugees that come from Eritrea and Sudan in this proposed scheme.

Primrose53 Sat 27-Jun-26 10:39:01

AGAA4

What a very unpleasant thread.

It’s news and not unpleasant. People have differing opinions and just because they do not align with yours does not make you right or better than anybody else.

It’s hilarious what excuses these do- gooders come up with, isn’t it.
I’ve seen them on their little ‘All migrants welcome’ marches being interviewed if they would offer accommodation. Every person the interviewer asked if they would home a migrant stuttered & stammered with an excuse why they couldn’t 😂 such hypocrisy.
One woman in France who did take in a migrant, ended up trashing her home.
She ended up sofa surfing at Friends homes as she couldn’t get him out 😂

Are you kidding? That’s not going to happen is it 😩

I have no problem helping out the Ukrainians.
We have a family member who is married to a Ukrainian, lovely person who I get on well with.
Very similar views to our own.

LemonJam Sat 27-Jun-26 11:10:44

There are those that will have no problem helping out the Eritrean and Sudan refugees also.

My small town really has made Ukrainians welcome. There are just over 500 Ukrainian adults and even more children, which means that just over 4% of the population here is from Ukraine. The interviewer must have chosen the "wrong kind of" marcher.

Yes I’ve seen the state of Manchester. The smell of urine around that old Debenhams.
State of Piccadilly Gardens, it’s a disgrace.
Tents cities. Not just Manc, but Liverpool too.
Amount of homeless ( just our own).
So I don’t think things are going to improve when AB gets in.
