Jalima, your comment about hymns being known to us from school assemblies strikes a chord with me.

I'm a member of my church's choir, it's a beautiful old church on a hill in a small village, stunning location and very popular with wedding couples who aren't interested in the church service, just the setting alas!

Our organist asks which hymns they want and they are non-plussed, have simply no idea and during the service, the choir and older members of the congregation will be the only ones singing.

Sorry, hijacked the thread but perhaps allowed as it's sort of relevant! So many mentioned by others are favourites of mine too.

and at my lovely mum-in-law’s funeral last year.
Her name was Mary, and it was a favourite of hers.

What an uplifting thread, thank you! There are so many good one, many included here and it's hard to choose but I think my all time favourite is Amazing Grace.

I remember learning Non Nobis Domine at scholl and still burst into song sometimes! Especially the long passage, taking a long breath in first.

muffin, I don't like to be personal but I believe a short course of antibiotics can cure that. Ask your local pharmacist.

I loved singing (and hearing) Hills of the North Rejoice before Christmas. Sadly I've stopped going to church now after the sermons have been getting increasingly political. The last straw was a sermon about "Toxic masculinity", including a graphic description of someone having their throat cut.

I have awful memories of church. I was made to go to a boring service in the morning, Sunday school in the afternoon, and an evening service. To me it was a thing to dread. When I got to about 16 i started refusing to go. My dad wouldn't speak to me on the Sundays I missed. Hearing hymns brings back the sheer boredom of having to sit still for hours on end. Sorry if that offends anyone.

Jalima1108, I think ‘without’ is an old-fashioned word for ‘outside’. ‘And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood’. Hebrews 13:12.

Strictly speaking Jerusalem is not a hymn and therefore not usually included in church services. Apparently it is based on a legend.

PS to Jalima: in the King James translation, which ‘There Is a Green Hill’ is probably quoting, it’s ‘without the gate.’

Oh wot, yes, Non Nobis Domine! I loved this - we sang it in the school choir, in the round. So effective, we wanted it to just go on forever!

I struggled to find the version of Non Nobis Domine that we sang at school - every video I found at first was of it being sung to a different, unfamiliar tune. But finally I found it! For anyone interested, this is how we sang it at school. Oh the memories!
