Favourite hymn

For years I had my little Carey Bonner hymn book and knew every hymn off by heart. I wish I knew what happened to that little book.
My dad's favourite was The Day Thou Gavest which remains to be a much loved hymn after all these years.

I have so many favourites it's hard to pick out a firm favourite. When I survey the Wondrous Cross would be appropriate for this time of the year .

Be still for the presence of the Lord

I couldn't narrow it down to just one, I'm afraid, and there will be others I love, too.

It was a point of honour at our school to absolutely belt out hymns. We had church every morning so lots of practice. An 'old girls' reunion a few years back saw us all back in the same church. Well, us old girls raised the roof. The young clergyman taking the service must have had the fright of his life! Happy memories.

Eternal Father - it's the Naval Hymn, witzend, and it was played at my father's funeral too.

I reckon I must have about 20 or so of these filed away in my brain with most of the words still there!
For those of us of a certain age (you may not be, of course, Lily65!) they are all in a file in our brains probably from morning school assemblies.

The one Roman Catholic and the two Jewish girls had to sit them out - assemblies were not very inclusive in those days!
Most of the Roman Catholic girls went to the convent.

Jane10 it is amazing, if going to church for a christening, funeral or whatever these days, that many of the younger generation look bewildered and don't know the tunes or words of the hymns, it's generally the oldies who sing.

Mind you, if I go to a harvest festival, Christingle or other service these days, I don't know the new hymns.

Another vote for “Guide me oh thou great redeemer .” I love the powerful imagery and strong hope in the words . After yesterday’s thread about death , it sums up my own beliefs . I also love “ In the bleak midwinter “ for Christina Rossetti’s beautiful poetry . You can tell I’m Welsh .

Lily that was always a favourite of mine too. “Hills of the North Rejoice”.

The spacious firmament on high is scientifically defunct but the feeling remains in the poetry.

I don't post often but this thread has made me Smile , I love to sing or be it badly and my list of songs mainly 80's and musical's is always interlaced by hymns.
I Rarely attend church anymore, but my faith is stronger than ever.

As a Welsh exile in Oxford, I love to belt out Cwm Rhondda in church.
There is another one I like called (I think) "We shall go out with joy", which is played at the end of the service and gets faster and faster with each verse, so that we are almost dancing out of the church.
My husband says that he wants "Lord of the Dance" played at his funeral. (Hopefully not for a long time!)
Why should hymns be dreary, when Christianity is so joyful and hopeful|?

Lily65 - that is "To be a Pilgrim" written by John Bunyan
It's also one of my favourites as it was my school hymn.
Lord of all Hopefulness is also a favourite, along with All things bright and beautiful - one of the lines "Each little flower that opens" is inscribed on my stillborn son's headstone .
