Who so beset him round
With dismal stories
Do but themselves confound
His strength the more is.

Sorry but there are some beautiful hymns. Hard to choose just one.

In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm

Two here as well.

2) Amazing Grace.

The Eventide hymn?

Love them Grandad and Lily.
Don't you just love singing hymns. I have a youtube list of favourite hymns which I play in the car.

I absolutely loathe Jerusalem! Its such nonsense.
I like 'Praise my soul the king of heaven'.
'Abide with me' takes some beating too especially at funerals.
'Cwm Ronda' is great (sorry about the spelling)
'How great thou art' is another terrific one to sing.

Hail Holy Queen enthroned above.

Jesu joy of man's desiring.

I should perhaps mention that I was raised Christian but am now agnostic.

I'm sure it's true that the devil doesn't have all the good tunes.

I wouldn't go to church now if you paid me...
My favourite is

There is a green hill far away
Without a city wall
Where the dear Lord was crucified
He died to save us all

Coming from the 'Sunday School' generation - peace and quiet for those 'Christian' parents on a Sunday afternoon - I also had to go to church with them in the mornings

There we sang the above mentioned hymn which I found so moving - tune and words - I sat and wept without stopping and no one in that whole church could have cared less, least of all my parents.

I have never been so upset before or after in my life.

It was a travesty for a small child.

The Eventide hymn is
The Day Thou Gavest Lord is Ended
Our vicar years ago always referred to it as the eventide hymn, and it was listed in my hymn book as that. We had it at my husband`s funeral.

There is a lovely hymn that I can’t remember the name of,so any Catholics on the thread can help me out hopefully
(A Catholic hymn ) which has the words, ‘Star of the sea, pray for the wanderer, pray for me’ in it.
I must be honest and say that I don’t like hymns usually as they are often a dirge, sung much out of tune by congregations, but I do like carols.
