What irritates you about other Gransnetters?

Perhaps I should duck before I even start!

I think there are two things which make me wish people didn't do them.

1 When someone asks for really simple advice and people don't read what others have said before saying exactly the same. Yes, I understand on long threads that one cannot read it all and there are posters who say they haven't read it all and hope they are not repeating, they are not irritating.
2 People who post to say they don't know anything about the subject, why post at all then? No, I don't mean those who just want to show sympathy or that they care, of course that is appreciated. It feels like they just have to comment for the sake of commenting.

Perhaps I'm not in a very tolerant mood today. I admit I'm feeling emotional so maybe that is why. Or maybe I'm just plain grumpy!

By saying I don't like when posters are unkind, "unkind", I personally don't mean people who disagree with each other, I mean those who are downright nasty and make personal comments. It would be a boring old world if we all had the same opinions.
There aren't many posters like that, thank goodness.

tassiegran Wed 04-Apr-18 08:03:03

There aren't many unkind posters but there are three very forthright posters in particular who have an opinion on EVERY post (or almost every post) and I find myself scrolling down to see what these three have to say. They seem to love an argument more than a conversation!

Maggiemaybe Wed 04-Apr-18 08:12:31

Just three, tassie? You’ve got us all puzzling now!

Auntieflo Wed 04-Apr-18 08:34:32

Greenfinch, have you changed your name? and are the the Greenfinch I met on a Reading meet up? Oh so confused and early in the morning too confused . Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread, and stop it stone dead blush

Greenfinch Wed 04-Apr-18 08:43:51

Sorry AuntiefloYes I am that same Greenfinch.I changed my name many years ago when my DD thought I might be recognised because my previous name was the somewhat unique name my twin grandchildren call me by. Generally I think name changing is confusing and seems to happen quite frequently on here.

MawBroon Wed 04-Apr-18 09:00:40

I know it was you Greenfinch/Goldfinch and have apologised.
Can I do any more? confused

Willow500 Wed 04-Apr-18 09:02:15

I don't think anything annoys me apart from myself - like starting to reply to a thread then getting distracted and leaving it half finished until it's too late to post what I was thinking. Or taking so long to write a reply that several others have replied after the comment I was responding to so it's out of context. And then there's the times I forget to preview and press post then realise I've made a mistake or worse put (smile) instead of smile - I could go on ...........

MawBroon Wed 04-Apr-18 09:02:25

This is exactly the sort of comment that annoys/upsets me.Even if not meant to be,I see it as implied criticism.Or is it humourous or just plain fact?

Blimey!
What was that about unkind comments (or SOH bypass? )

Greenfinch Wed 04-Apr-18 09:15:59

Oh dear.
Is it possible not to be jumped on??
I will stay out of this.Clearly a lot of crossed wires .Sorry.

MawBroon Wed 04-Apr-18 09:21:46

Speaking as the one at the bottom of the pile after the jumping took place I would have hoped that the “oops and blush “ in my post would have indicated that it was intended to be self- deprecating, however, if someone wants to be annoyed/upset at imagined criticism, who am I to comment. Just a shame to spread it around so early in the day. confused

I don't mind when people hijack a thread and turn it into something else unless it is a very serious thread. So, with that in mind Jalima when my HP printer refused to scan to computer I just started giving everything to DH and asking him to do it and email to me. No, I'm not a luddite, same with the TV and TV controls, I am sure I could sort them out if I wanted to but I don't need to. I think the expression is 'why buy a dog and bark yourself'.

I am another one who really doesn't like it when someone is unpleasant on here, it is not necessary. What really annoys me is when I post something, deliberately non-specific and someone decides they know my opinion. That has happened to such an extent that at one point I was accused of working for an outsourcing organisation, two were named and I was asked which one I worked for! I had very carefully written so that my opinion was not stated. Also, when someone misreads my post and accuses me of saying something I didn't and then doesn't apologise.

kittylester Wed 04-Apr-18 10:35:55

On the subject of printers, DH's lap top sits next to the printer upstairs in the study but he has to email stuff to me, downstairs, to print. confused

I agree with you again Marydoll, when I wrote I don’t like unkind posts, I don’t mean someone who simply has a different point of view, I mean the arrogant or patronising I know better than you type of post. I normally try to be balanced in my posts, but I was so incensed recently in one thread , by a poster who was unbelievably patronising and rude, that I wrote a short, very rude comment back, and now I’m ashamed of myself, because it’s out of character for me.
Whatever one’s opinion, we shouldn’t be rude, arrogant, or patronising, and most us aren’t, but there are a few......shock

Nonnie Wed 04-Apr-18 10:46:31

maddyone but we are all human and just sometimes.............

Witzend Wed 04-Apr-18 10:47:10

Ditto to long posts with no paragraphs.
I can hardly ever be bothered to read them - don't people realise how off-putting a long screed of unbroken print is?

The only other thing, apart perhaps from a touch of prudery now and then, is the odd poster who apparently comes on GN largely to enjoy a safe, anonymous go at other people.

Of course it's not just GN - I visit a couple of completely different forums and albeit not common, that type does seem to be an occupational hazard.

Greyduster Wed 04-Apr-18 10:47:25

Life is too short to have to weigh every word, and there is always someone on Gransnet who will grab you by the short and curlies if you don’t!

Jalima1108 Wed 04-Apr-18 11:15:35

Gransnetters who never post annoy me. Why did they join ? Was it just for the competitions ?

If they never post, how do you know they joined lemongrove ?
Or are they like Schrödinger’s cat? (now there’s a novel username).

Whispers quietly so as not to upset anyone:
If I read a list of competition winners there are usually one or two recognisable names of people who post and a whole list of names of people I've never heard of. But then, I don't read all the threads.

Tiptoes out again quietly

JackyB Wed 04-Apr-18 11:44:06

Just to counterbalance the general tenor of the thread, I enjoy reading all the threads on Gransnet and think that most contributors are great fun.

If someone starts getting catty, I just stop reading that thread.

The only thing that annoys me is that in Pedants' Corner, the same old things have started cropping up by the end of the first page; all those threads are identical.

Jalima1108 Wed 04-Apr-18 11:45:38

and there's always an 'off' switch grin

Jalima1108 Wed 04-Apr-18 12:21:34

What really annoys me is when I post something, deliberately non-specific and someone decides they know my opinion.
Also, when someone misreads my post and accuses me of saying something I didn't and then doesn't apologise.

I agree Nonnie

Bellasnana Wed 04-Apr-18 12:32:54

Not exactly irritated by anyone, but I’m also not a fan of the sniping, patronising, or unkind comments. It is reminiscent of the school playground and rather sad that some folk still feel the need for it, despite having reached a ‘certain age’.

Having said that, most gransnetters that I’ve had dealings with have been lovely. ?

paddyann Wed 04-Apr-18 12:51:02

Oh dear,I wasn't pointing the finger at anyone in particular when I said some were in a timewarp .I'm very sorry you thought it was you Jane10 that certainly wasn't my intention.I meant timewarp with regards to attitudes mainly, and I have to say I haven't found you victorian at all .As to the poster who thinks people who are with /obsessed with GC or family I hold my hands up to that.I grew up in a very close family ,I saw my Aunts every day until I started school and we saw them at least a couple of times every week after that .Its "normal" to me to see my children and GC all the time ..its who we are .I'd much rather spend time with them than with most other folk I know .Luckily both AC feel the same and can often pop in when passing or call to say their in the pub and would we like to join them.Thats family life as I know it .I can imagine not seeing them all week or for weeks on end .I wont feel bad about it....I love how my life is .

maddyone Wed 04-Apr-18 12:59:34

Thanks Nannie smile

Mapleleaf Wed 04-Apr-18 13:00:14

Sounds lovely, paddyann.

Nonnie Wed 04-Apr-18 13:07:44

Those who think there is too much nastiness might like to know that I think it was worse when I first joined! I remember, when I hadn't been on her very long, I said something about people bullying and got a whole load of things like 'if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen'. It felt quite clique then and doesn't now. There seemed to be a group who had been on since the year dot and felt their opinions were more valid than others. Or maybe I have just got used to it all?
