Always so tired

Today for example I have got up at 7.30, cleaned the fridge, vacuumed the house, watered garden with bath water (!), made breakfast and washed up, put on some washing and I already feel tired! I’m 71. I plan to go swimming later and will swim for an hour. I don’t sleep well, but surely feeling so wiped out isn’t normal? I’ve had bloods taken and all well in that area, so not anaemic

Its also the weather affecting us all, you haven't done badly today your entitled to feel tired, rest up now we all need to take a break, yours bloods are fine so no worries there, your 70 not 17 smile

Have you been tested for under active thyroid?

I think most of us feel wiped out in this weather, I do more than I usually do and similarly I don't sleep well, hence always tired. Swimming for an hour is pretty impressive, the most I manage these days is about 25 minutes

Are you serious?

Today I got up and had a shower. Had some breakfast.

Picked up my pad.

I might do some knitting in a moment……….

Oh I put my sheets into wash.

No wonder I’m exhausted 🤣🤣🤣

I think most people would feel tired after doing what you’ve done in three and a half hours this morning Sallywally1, unless they were under 40. I find I get a lot more done in a day when I pace myself, so I do jobs for half an hour to 40 minutes, then do something sitting down for about 20 minutes, and repeat the cycle until I’ve done what I need to - I feel like my phone, constantly being recharged.

I think the weather is really sapping our energy, I’ve walked the dog and brought him home. Driven to local supermarket and done a little shop, now having an iced coffee and some nuts ( don’t want to spoil my appetite for lunch) but pretty sure I’ll be zapped after lunch. It’s starting to irritate me too.

I’m not sleeping well either with the hot weather, compounded by the fact I have some sort of viral infection which has left me coughing a lot. The heat isn’t helping at all. I have the fan on all night, which drives DH mad, but it just cools me down a bit.

I find my energy levels aren’t what they usually are and I’m having a nap in the afternoon too. My bloods are recently checked too and all ok. I’m putting it down to this unbearable hot weather.

A full blood count doesn't usually include Vitamin D check. If you're avoiding the sun due to the heat you're vit D level may be depleted. Tiredness, insomnia and a host of other symptoms can be caused by vit D deficiency. Though when l was very deficient l couldn't have done what you've already done today.

I couldn’t do all that you have already accomplished in one day. Have you thought of just slowing down a bit!

HelterSkelter1 Mon 10-Aug-26 11:53:45

For heavens sake what you have done this morning in warm weather and after weeks of hot weather where your body works overtime to keep your body temperature at normal level, would make most 70 years old tired. Give yourself a break. Pace yourself. An hours swimming on the same day is probably pushing it.

I think the lack of good sleep is what’s causing your tiredness.
At 71 I could have done what you describe but I’ve always had an enormous amount of energy.
I think I lost that 2 years ago at 78.
I’m also blessed with good sleep. I read for about 15 mins then it’s 8 hrs where I’m practically unconscious.
Have you tried any over the counter sleeping pills. That could be your answer.

Could be under active thyroid, before I was diagnosed, I couldn't keep my eyes open in the afternoon, even though I didn't feel physically tired. Could also be your bed. Do you wake up feeling that you've had a good night's rest? If not, how old is your mattress?

Witzend Mon 10-Aug-26 12:04:11

Good Lord, no wonder you’re tired after doing all that! Can’t you spread it all out a bit?

All I’ve done so far today is get up late, read bits of the paper, do a couple of word puzzles, and sew up, stuff and sew on a monkey’s arm. (See Arts and Crafts.).
Oh, and book lunch with 2 ex colleagues for tomorrow.
All accompanied by probably 4 coffees.

Different people have different level of energy. I know a lady who is out everyday doing her good deeds and charity work. At night she is either at an exercise or dancing class. She travels, is always able to be counted upon to help. She is 75. I can barely crawl out of bed and do one thing a day.

Fallingstar Mon 10-Aug-26 12:08:11

Sallywally1 from the list of things you have already done is no wonder you feel tired. I am 77 and get tired just changing the beds. Of course only you know about your normal energy levels, but I’d say you sound as if you are doing a lot, and in the hot weather I find I am flagging due to sleep deprivation and am just unable to get going when the heat is so wearying.
Dehydration could also play a part. In hot weather I try to drink plenty and give my DH lots to drink because he has various disabilities and specifically heart trouble with atrial fibrillation a problem if he becomes dehydrated and AF can make you tired, many older people have it and may not know. But tbh you sound much more energetic than me. Am like a slug in this weather.

Yes this is so true. I have two friends in mind. Always busy in the holidays with grandchildren, swimming, activities everyday, golf themselves on some days, gardening for their offspring on others. I just haven’t got that energy anymore. It does worry me a bit but I guess we are all different.
