Magazines for your summer holiday?

Ever since doing my apprenticeship (Bookbinding) I've always associated magazines with old people. It was part of my job to get their mags every week.

How tedious for you, emilie, but nice of you to drop in on this thread about magazines.

Gave up on Cosmo 30 years ago and haven't read a magazine since. I take a well-loaded Kindle on holiday and am never lost for reading matter.

I get GH free with my Lloyd's account but it is quite boring. It is called a lifestyle choice and none of the other mags or other choices appeal to me, so it keeps dropping through the door. I glance then pass it on.

People's Friend still has decent fiction and can't find any others these days. Won't read celebrity tittle-tattle, so don't read newspapers, any other magazines. Tend to take a Hanjie/Griddlers or Logical Problems book or magazine.

I subscribe to the Readly app, and can choose from hundreds of mags for £7.99 a month to read on my iPad. I reckon that's about the equiv of two glossies. You can download your favourites before you leave home. Do like to buy Private Eye occasionally, even if don't always agree with its politics ?

I agree about People's Friend, Jane10, as I sometimes have stories in there too! Woman's Weekly and My Weekly are not too celebrity focussed - more like Woman and Woman's Own used to be when my mum bought them.

I like the Woman's Weekly fiction specials for holidays.

Had a subscription to Woman &Home given to me as a birthday present once and I was unimpressed with it. Hardly anything in it to read as it was mostly adverts, and the fashion bits were no use to me with items featured all costing many hundreds of pounds, well out of my price range.

Skweek1 the Womans Weekly Fiction Special is good. It's monthly.
People's Friend and (I think) Take a Break also do Fiction Specials.
I like to have one of them for travelling.

I have a subscription for Yours magazine which is very good value and great for the mature person. Also like Healthy mag from Holland and Barrett which has brilliant articles.

When I am off on a trip I buy Womans Weekly and Psychologies

Don't take any of the popular weeklies though I may have a look in the hairdresser's. I subscribe to Conde Naste Traveller, Devon Life & Saga magazine - all provide interesting & informative reads & great photos. However, never take them on hold & prefer a well-stocked Kindle

I don't take any. Just books and/or Kindle.
Too much celeb stuff - I'm just not interested and don't even know who most of them are! - too many ads, too much Perfect Lifestyle stuff.
I did subscribe to Coast for a year, but didn't renew.
But I'm another who enjoys Private Eye.

We get a few local 'Perfect Lifestyle' free mags through the door - full of ads for mega expensive houses, ditto kitchens and plastic surgery/Botox, etc.
Those mostly go in the recycling unread, but Dh has been known to have a flick through while on the loo...

Me too, emilie, and I still read magazines sometimes.

I wonder if I should nip over to a thread on cross-stitch, perhaps, or make-up - just to say how those things don't interest me and maybe throw a casual insult at the people posting there.

Or I could take a grown up attitude instead and leave them to it.

I don't read fiction. I buy a couple of fashion mags a year and maybe an interior decor mag in France, but only to look at the pictures or fashion forecast. Their articles are all about nothing.

I take my kindle full of biographies, non fiction and occasional classics. A puzzle book and maybe the RA magazine and Printmaking.

I no longer look through magazines in waiting rooms since the day there were two people 'wet thumbing' their way through. I thought of all the germs they might be depositing, and all other people's germs they would be licking off their thumbs, makes me shudder to think about it. No I am not obsessive about germs, but that was just too much.

I just take my kindle because I can make the print bigger. I don't really bother with magazines. I do read a lot though.

"The Lady" for the puzzles which are good for keeping my brain active, and "The Oldie" for it's wicked articles, sardonic humour and excellent book reviews. Can't abide the celeb. magazines and the " beautiful-homes" type make me feel incredibly guilty when I look around at my surroundings.

I have subscriptions to Good Housekeeping (GH) and Country Living.

I agree with what others say about GH - full of impossibly expensive clothes, ingredients for recipes and stories about women who've struck out in new directions after a tragedy of some kind. The latter stories are of course admirable but GH uses stylists the women look ultra glamorous as if it's "not allowed" to show them as their natural selves.

This thread is making me think there's a gap in the market for magazines for older and retired women who don't have bottomless wallets - or is there a magazine out there that I am not aware oF?

I dont buy magazines but will read them if anyone gives me some. Have no interest in the 'celeb' ones though, have no idea who any of them are.

I have Womens Weekly on subscription and really enjoy it. It's modern and I don't feel likes it content is "elderly". I find Yours is rather staid but I like the competitions. I used to buy Prima for the competitions but they have greatly reduced the worth of the prizes. I used to love Woman and Womans Own but they have gone to the dogs.

No interest in mags generally. I buy Garden Answers once a month and that's it. Who cares what the celebs are doing, not me. Also the amount of advertising is crazy, more ads than substance.

Still enjoy my subscription to Readers Digest ( though much thinner than in days gone by) but on my library app can get magazines to read free on my tablet. They can be downloaded before going abroad.
