Just been shopping and trying to choose magazines to take away on holiday/flight/beach etc.

Are we still buying Peoples Friend and Yours?

Or are we modernising with Prima, Hello and OK ?

Of course some of you will have ereaders but I prefer pages and paper. What are you choosing ?

I didn't know people bought magazines, I thought they were only allowed in the doctors' waiting room.

I used to enjoy, Best, Bella, woman and woman's own but find that they are mainly recycling events from This Morning or Loose Women. I used to love readers digest, not sure if is still going. Holiday reading for me is always books, lots off them. Enjoy your holiday. smile

I don't subscribe to mags at present but I do enjoy House type magazines from time to time, The Oldie and Homes & Antiques. Like others I abhor 'celebrity' type magazines. I do enjoy a daily newspaper though.

I was going to join the ranks of the grown ups grin and claim I never read magazines. Then remembered I've still got a cheap subscription to Prima, that I keep meaning to cancel (I save the patterns, but haven't sewn anything for years). I get engrossed in the sleb mags at the hairdresser's, and I can be awake for hours reading the scandal papers my sister leaves by the bed when I stay over. Oh, and DH still insists on having the Radio Times delivered, and I do read it.

I just take books on holiday, though. Back in the day I used to like the Summer Specials and save them for when we went away.

I never take magazines on holiday, it's hard enough getting through security these days, although I understand why and am not complaining. I take my Kindle,as I prefer a book to magazines and it gives me lots of choice for reading.

I don't buy magazines - can't remember the last time. Prefer books.

As well of a number of professional magazines I read Homes and Interiors Scotland which has great features on architecture, interior design and art.

The cheap magazines are usually filled with a lot of celebrity gossip or lurid accounts of dysfunctional relationships - "My husband cheated on me with my Mum" - that sort of thing. The glossy ones are full of lush photographs of beautiful women in strange clothes - and adverts. They cost an absolute fortune so I'd rather buy a paperback.

Does the Radio Times count as a magazine? It's the only one I buy but my daughter did buy me a subscription to Woman and Home as I always used to read her copy when visiting! I think that they are too expensive generally and couldn't justify spending the money.

Jane thanks for the heads -up smile
Wonder if I will recognise any of your naughty
Grans wink

Private Eye and The Spectator

I like Woman's Weekly and Prima I also like home decor mags. I really hate celebrity magazines. Who really cares what they get up to. Most of them haven't the sense they were born with.

Jane10 Thu 29-Jun-17 17:25:53

cherrytree59. It is under my 'nom de plume' (pretentious? moi?). So far there have been 5 published and there's one pending. Last year's Christmas special featured one of mine set in a certain department store. There was another set there too. Somehow I often find myself writing about Grans being naughty. Can't think why!
They're also in book 2 which is out next month. Apologies for advertising. No names no pack drill!

Cherrytree59 Thu 29-Jun-17 17:01:34

Wow Jane will take another look at The people's Friend.
I enjoyed your Book (Dept Store)
Apologies I just hopeless with book titles .
But I do remember your pen name.smile
Is it the same for the 'Friend'?

Thanks for the answer, Kim19.

DH gets The Spectator so I'll ask him to keep it for me.

Will google "The Oldie" - hadn't heard of that one before.

I think I should probably give up GH and spend the money on a subscription to a puzzles magazine so that I can keep my brain active!

Kim19 Thu 29-Jun-17 16:07:44

RamblingRose22, in answer to your speculative question, I rather think Saga and Oldies pretty much covers the market. I had a sub to the former for many years but they've recently changed their format as well as being top heavy with ads so I withdrew my support. I think Private Eye and the Spectator have a lot going for them but the latter can be a bit heavy although very informative.

Madsad Thu 29-Jun-17 15:54:02

Still enjoy my subscription to Readers Digest ( though much thinner than in days gone by) but on my library app can get magazines to read free on my tablet. They can be downloaded before going abroad.

Foxyferret Thu 29-Jun-17 15:09:59

No interest in mags generally. I buy Garden Answers once a month and that's it. Who cares what the celebs are doing, not me. Also the amount of advertising is crazy, more ads than substance.

inishowen Thu 29-Jun-17 15:01:57

I have Womens Weekly on subscription and really enjoy it. It's modern and I don't feel likes it content is "elderly". I find Yours is rather staid but I like the competitions. I used to buy Prima for the competitions but they have greatly reduced the worth of the prizes. I used to love Woman and Womans Own but they have gone to the dogs.

silverlining48 Thu 29-Jun-17 14:53:43

I dont buy magazines but will read them if anyone gives me some. Have no interest in the 'celeb' ones though, have no idea who any of them are.

Ramblingrose22 Thu 29-Jun-17 14:41:55

I have subscriptions to Good Housekeeping (GH) and Country Living.

I agree with what others say about GH - full of impossibly expensive clothes, ingredients for recipes and stories about women who've struck out in new directions after a tragedy of some kind. The latter stories are of course admirable but GH uses stylists the women look ultra glamorous as if it's "not allowed" to show them as their natural selves.

This thread is making me think there's a gap in the market for magazines for older and retired women who don't have bottomless wallets - or is there a magazine out there that I am not aware oF?

chicken Thu 29-Jun-17 14:33:53

"The Lady" for the puzzles which are good for keeping my brain active, and "The Oldie" for it's wicked articles, sardonic humour and excellent book reviews. Can't abide the celeb. magazines and the " beautiful-homes" type make me feel incredibly guilty when I look around at my surroundings.

newnanny Thu 29-Jun-17 14:28:54

I just take my kindle because I can make the print bigger. I don't really bother with magazines. I do read a lot though.

00mam00 Thu 29-Jun-17 14:16:13

I don't read fiction. I buy a couple of fashion mags a year and maybe an interior decor mag in France, but only to look at the pictures or fashion forecast. Their articles are all about nothing.

I take my kindle full of biographies, non fiction and occasional classics. A puzzle book and maybe the RA magazine and Printmaking.

I no longer look through magazines in waiting rooms since the day there were two people 'wet thumbing' their way through. I thought of all the germs they might be depositing, and all other people's germs they would be licking off their thumbs, makes me shudder to think about it. No I am not obsessive about germs, but that was just too much.

FarNorth Thu 29-Jun-17 14:10:36

Me too, emilie, and I still read magazines sometimes.

I wonder if I should nip over to a thread on cross-stitch, perhaps, or make-up - just to say how those things don't interest me and maybe throw a casual insult at the people posting there.

Or I could take a grown up attitude instead and leave them to it.
