We'd better get the "rules" set out before we start. Let's decide a few things.

1) I'll find out what is needed to mark the right place, and whether it is still possible for other people to add their position (last time it got a bit complicated. It may still be the same. You may have to be added to a list of people sharing before you can add anything.)

2) Do we want to have usernames displayed, or some other text that you will recognise as you, but is not advertising your location to the wide world?

3) Do you want to mark, say, the centre of your town, or a landmark, or your actual postcode?

4) Is there anything else?

If enough people on this thread want to join, and we get the ground rules set, I'll start a new thread.

How close to the location of our actual abode would you want us to be? Show us your map Elegran. Seriously I would not want to give more that a hint at my location than I do on the Good Morning thread.

I'll send you the same link I sent Newist, Nellie. The flag lands in a fairly specific place, and the more you zoom in the closer you get, but you could put it at the nearest town, or the middle of a field some distance away - or at your local pub. I don't think you can just mark a county -but it might mark the middle of the county, I am not sure about that.

Good! We know that it works. All that we need now are some more flags to plant.

They have simplified it from last time - before you had to enter co-ordinates. Now anyone with editing rights can just click on the right place. Next problem - how to accomplish that without opening the door wide to t****s who will add spam or rude words.

I must say (well, to be strictly accurate there is no actual compunction legal or otherwise to say anything) that I have been finding GN a tad "earnest" lately.

Yes, of course politics etc can be discussed, and no, I'm not saying that all threads should be fluffy/surreal/humorous, but I think the balance has shifted quite a bit.

When I check in in the morning, with my first cup of tea of the day, I sometimes fail to find a thread that I actually want to post on, which is a bit sad, really.

Only my opinion.

There needs to be a balance, phoenix and recently it has tipped over into earnestness, as you say. Anyone who posts something a bit frivolous starts to feel guilty at being flippant. That is not at all good for morale.

Viva flippancy and mirth, I say. Nothing like it for cheering everyone up and givning them the strength to face the day.

I think those of us who enjoy light hearted threads and often make flippant remarks are getting sick and tired of being jumped on. Gransnet is not owned by anyone. We're all entitled to post in our own style so I have no problems with the earnestness on political threads. It's a bit galling though when the same single minded posters criticize posts elsewhere and end up turning what could/should be a light hearted subject into another drawn out slanging match.

Like phoenix I find fewer threads to post on these days.

I don't understand the problem with the political threads; I mean, no one HAS to read anything, they're not being forced on anyone.

I occasionally lurk on mumsnet and they have a variety of threads to say the least.
I do start some light hearted threads as well as some heavier ones.

I do wonder sometimes, though have not sort of dared suggest it, whether some posters could nick some of their thread ideas if others of their own cannot be thought up?
I sometimes think, I wonder what gransnetters think of this issue, when I read mumsnet.

No problem with political threads Tegan, just as Elegran says, it's all about balance.

Earnest isn't the word I would use, TBH. To stay with the male names, I would say some people Hector! Did you see what I did there? I'm quite proud of that!

Or even Harry!

I avoid the political threads entirely, and also shy away from anything contentious, as I`m not good at confrontation. Makes me a bit of a lightweight (I wish!!) but never mind.

The current political/world situations are very interesting, so no doubt that is why there are a good few threads covering those issues. We grans are allowed to be serious some times, aren't we? I agree, though, that it is not very nice when personal or hurtful remarks are made. Let's keep it civilised!

Here`s a photo from our Birmingham meet up on October 6th 2012. I`m trying to remember either her real name, or even her username, of the lady sitting at the far end of the table, weqring a purplish blue dress, and she has grey hair. At te meet up I thought she was really nice, with a great sense of humour, but she left Gransnet shortly afterwards, sadly. Most of us there are still here, just a couple who are no longer members, unless they`ve changed names.
