Rudeness/bad manners

I offer free English lessons to people who mostly work locally in low-paid jobs in the hospitality or retail industry. My students are of all ages and from all sorts of backgrounds - and are usually very appreciative and hard-working.
I got an enquiry a few days ago from the owner of a local restaurant who was phoning on behalf of his wife and we made an appointment for him to bring her along today to meet me and fill out the forms. Fifteen minutes after they were due to arrive I called to ask where they were. They hadn't forgotten, he simply said it wasn't convenient for him today - I told him that although the lessons are free my time is not cheap and that I object to him wasting it, at which point he became embarrassed and finally said a reluctant 'sorry'.

I think he was just plain rude and I am still feeling cross even after doing a great amount of cleaning!! (It's what I do when I'm bothered.)

What bad manners make you seethe?

My DH held a door open for a lady once and she just sauntered through without thanking him. He said 'pardon?' She replied 'I didn't say anything'. He said 'oh I beg your pardon, I could have sworn I heard you say thank you'. She scuttled off sheepishly.

I've tried hard to think of the last time anyone was rude to me and can't think of one! I must live in the best place in the world! I would add that since retirement I have made a point of having nothing to do with anyone the least bit irritating and have simply walked away from anyone who I didn't want to mix with. So liberating after working with a few 'difficult' people.

As for jollyg's comment that there may be some witches on here - perhaps she is right. There are many people on here who seem to have cast spells on some of my problems and made them all but disappear smile

What a lovely thing to say, KatyK. I agree with Nonnie that it's good to be able to avoid people who irritate me - there were all too many of those around when I was working! I must say that on both European breaks I've had this year (Rome and Palma), I found everyone kind and considerate. I never had to stand on a bus or the Metro and the waiters in cafés and restaurants were lovely to us - two old dears! Silver hair works wonders!

Well it's true anno. If anyone has 'been funny' with me I have always tried to find out if I have done something to upset them. Now I just think (unless it is someone important to me) 'whatever' and let them get on with it.

Never mind dear, perhaps if you ignore them all the nasty witches will go away.
