Is Gransnet leaning more to the left?

After looking through the thread on the Guardian top 10 books it prompted me to revisit a thread I started in August re the Daily Telegraph top 50 books.

The responses were pretty negative on the whole, it would seem posters felt the list was “subjective, tosh, prescriptive, snobbery, silly, objective, woke”

The Guardian list was far better received.

This got me thinking is Gransnet leaning too far left?

I asked Chat GPT’s opinion.

Here’s some of the feedback.

Some 10 active posters create 43% of posts.

During the 2024 election academic research found strong views on both sides.

The researchers described the discussions as politically diverse and sometimes polarised.

The most interesting though was a Trustpilot review.
This echoed my my feelings exactly.

“Gransnet is the sister site for the very well known Mumsnet site but aimed at Grandparents and mainly over 50s.

It has so much potential to be a great site and there are some really nice, helpful people on there with a wide range of discussions which are usually pretty lively, supportive and informative.

Unfortunately in more recent times it has become very cliquey with a number of Far Left supporters who tend to dominate any discussion on politics and news and seem to spend all their time on there arguing fiercely with people who do not share their views and they can get very aggressive and rude. The Gransnet moderators used to do a great job but if you report them now, the nasty comments remain which is very unfair. moderators should be unbiased but it looks as though they favour people on the Left. These contributors also like to belittle others or make sarcastic remarks about grammar, spelling etc which, again, are usually allowed.

It is also very sad that several people have either been banned from the site with no good reason given and others have just left because it is so cliquey.”

I have not seen any posts from far left supporters at all over last few months 🤷‍♀️

Top 10 or top 50 books will always be subjective, vary over time and don’t really reflect individual readers’ political views 🤷‍♀️

Top 10 Gransnet posters will vary over time - as they are top 10 posters at any moment d time it’s fairly obvious they will generate a 43% of posts at that moment in time 🤷‍♀️

I agree the views of political posters are politically diverse which goes to prove that being diverse they span all political shades 🤷‍♀️

All chat websites including mumsnet are likely to develop cliques 🤷‍♀️

I have not noticed that Gransnet moderators are biased more to left wing leaning posters - the majority of the many Gransnet posts don’t signify political leanings of each poster 🤷‍♀️

I have not been on Gransnet so can’t compare to past. I would think Gransnet members have a personal view how they experience the site and those views will be many and diverse so how can chat GPT know and speak for every Gransnet 🤷‍♀️

How can Trustpilot speak for Gransnet 🤷‍♀️

This is one person's view. In fact the only view of Gransnet on Trust pilot.

To say grans on here are left leaning and cliquey on one review is not right.
Trust pilot itself says as Gransnet itself hasn't asked for reviews then this doesn't give a true picture.

I’d agree with that.

I am relatively new to the site and know that some have been on the site for a long time so I accept they could be a bit cliquey though I hate to use this word, it feels pretty normal to me, I mean if you join any group there will be others who have been there a long time and so stick together. Doesn’t bother me too much.
As for far left supporters arguing on news and politics, I haven’t noticed this, there are those who start threads about small boats who seem to be more than able to argue their point and others who argue against them. But I would hate to label anyone far right or far left. These are silly labels because the far left are communists not people who support Labour, who are centre left and though Farage et al are far right as is the rent a mob Yaxley Lennon lot, those who see Reform as a way out of a political quagmire are by no means all far right, most have been scared witless by far right propaganda.
I don’t see extreme views at all and imagine their posts would be deleted pretty soon if these views were expressed.

So as it’s the only review does this mean it’s not valid?

This is one of many true experiences explaining why you shouldn’t TrustPilot.

Thanks for that Petra. I think the same is true of Trip Advisor. When we stayed in a good hotel in Amsterdam a few years ago everyone got a piece of paper left in their room saying that if they gave a good review on TA they could win a free night in the hotel. Am not sure of any review site tbh.

I’d agree with that.

Totally agree too. And calling anyone who doesn't agree with the far left and racist.

Casdon Tue 20-Oct-26 20:07:07

Yes, it means it’s not a reliable indicator, for sure.

I think the only place on Gransnet where you really see what people’s political views are is on the news and politics threads. I do think there are more posters on those threads who lean to the left. That is a reflection of the political landscape of the UK though, Everybody can join in, but throwaway comments without any substance or evidence are given scant attention because the debate is more important than the view, if that makes sense. That’s why there are a lot of detailed conversations between posters who others may classify as all having the same views, when actually there’s a big spectrum of views amongst them.

Bukkie Tue 20-Oct-26 20:09:57

Sorry I meant the far right and racist. I obviously can't type abd watch television.

You - plus and your Trustpilot quote in OP 🤷‍♀️

MG55 Tue 20-Oct-26 20:32:18

I have always been very impressed with the range of views shown on Gransnet and I am always interested in reading the articulate and thoughtful explanations from the political leanings on either side.
Two minutes later, on another thread, when another Gransnetter needs support, the above protagonists are there to offer it 💐

LemonJam Tue 20-Oct-26 20:36:50

I haven’t seen any far left posts on Gransnet last few months- have you?

LemonJam Tue 20-Oct-26 20:38:16

I share your view MG55- to me thats the human side and beauty of Gransnet 💐

Chat GPT opinion??

I think in the OP, Chat GPT said the political discussions were diverse & informative.

The bit about far left, argumentative & cliquey was from Trustpilot on the basis of one person's review.

If I read the OP right that is.

Casdon Tue 20-Oct-26 20:39:33

Whether you consider a post far left or far right surely depends on your own stance, so I don’t think anybody could objectively answer that question LemonJam, because none of us see ourselves as others see us.

LemonJam Tue 20-Oct-26 20:49:37

We can though view posts the lens is accepted political of far right and far left though.

In context of accepted definition of what far left means I have not seen any far left views on Gransnet myself in recent months. There is no far left uk party featuring anywhere in polls either.

Yes, LemonJam, I think you have summed up what I was trying to say.
The human side is really saying that we are all products of a number of things and those things shape us and our views.
In my own family we have a wide range of views which we have to negotiate and try not to fall out over. Not easy at all 💐

MG55 Tue 20-Oct-26 20:52:18

Thank you valdali 👍

MollyNew Tue 20-Oct-26 20:52:59

My observation is that there are a range of views expressed on GN, most of which are what I would think of as centre/right or centre/left. I'd be interested to know what sort of comments the Trustpilot reviewer classed as "Far Left".

A Trust pilot review is through a person’s individual lens though, so it would not need to be an accurate representation of the accepted definition of far left to be called that.

"What will Chat GPT and AI mean for schools and homework?

www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zc9kqyc

Some news articles and celebrities have reported that ChatGPT will "end homework", with Elon Musk tweeting "It's a new world. Goodbye homework!"
While ChatGPT can answer questions which may be able to help you out with homework, it might not always give the correct facts.
This is because its main purpose is to create sentences that could have been written by a human - rather than searching the internet for facts.

This means it can sometimes get things wrong, which wouldn't be good for homework 😳
