I was so looking forward to the new series of Endeavour because I really enjoyed the previous ones. I found last night's plot unbelievable, and since I'd forgotten what had happened in the last series to cause Morse to end up in prison I found it doubly confusing. I couldn't understand how Morse could be reinstated when he had a criminal record. Did anyone else see it, what did you think, and can you fill me in on the Morse/prison/reinstatement situation?

I googled it during one of the ad breaks - Morse and Thursday had rumbled corruption in the higher echelons of the local police force. There was a shoot-out at the end of the last series -

From Wikipedia....."In the final episode, the looming merger of city and county police and misgivings about corruption, lead Thursday to consider retirement, in response to strong hints from C.S. Bright about age and health. Disheartened by this, Morse speculates to Monica about leaving the police and going abroad with her. Assistant Chief Constable Clive Deare asks Thursday and Morse to covertly investigate corruption within the police and council. Morse is sent to a rendezvous where he is ambushed by corrupt officers and Thursday is lured to Blenheim Vale, a derelict former wayward boys home, where there was rampant sexual and physical abuse (of which Jakes was a victim). Morse escapes the ambush and goes to support Thursday, who is shot by Deare, a participant in the abuse at Blenheim Vale. Deare tells Morse he has framed him for the murder of Chief Constable Rupert Standish. Deare is about to kill Morse when he is shot dead by a girl who had also been abused at Blenheim Vale, who then kills herself. Bright and Strange show up with backup and an ambulance. As Thursday is being loaded into an ambulance, Morse is arrested by officers from another force for the murder of Chief Constable Standish. The series ends with Thursday's fate unknown and Morse in a jail cell."

At the very beginning of yesterday's first episode there was a voice over saying that an enquiry had exonerated Morse, but that he was still temporarily suspended from duty. Half way through the chief of police was saying that it would be good to have Morse back - and it then seemed that the choice was down to Morse himself - which was a bit weird. Mind you, plotwise I think that was the least of my problems!

I may have this wrong, but I thought the implication in this episode was that he had been put in prison to keep him safe from the villains?
I think it is beautifully acted, beautifully shot and the music is wonderful, but it is too sloooow and the plots are ridiculous. I also think that Morse and Lewis benefited from the upbeat Lewis and the laconic Morse / Hathaway combo, but these two (much as I like Roger Allam) are both quite slow in their delivery.
I thought this episode was OK for the most part, but the dénouement was beyond ludicrous.

I agree with Mamie. Was glad I had recorded it so I could speed things up by skipping through the adverts. Loved it before and hope now Morse is back in the saddle, things will get back to normal. Too many toffs!

mcem Mon 04-Jan-16 19:36:36

That was my reaction too. Let's get back to normal!
Decided this episode was some sort of transition but if next episode doesn't shape up I'll reluctantly abandon this series.

I really like the characters of Morse and Thursday - I think they're a great combination - but the storyline was one of the most ludicrous I have ever seen. I do hope this is just a blip.

Thanks for the info luckygirl.

I agree. However, the recent one with the 'big cat 'killings was tremendous, back to the standard of the others, and in fact, even better, I was very gripped by it, particularly the last ten mins!

I really like Endeavour but did I spot an historical inaccuracy?

The episode began with a news report about the start of the Six Day War (June 1967)

During Endeavour's investigation, Her Wot Dunnit was praying for the Holy Land because, 'They're bombing Galilee'

It's well documented that a pre-emptive strike by the Israeli Air Force (5th June) destroyed enemy airfields in order to wipe out that possibility.

I discovered this series and am enjoying it immensely not least for the peep back into times gone by . Not least the fact that everything happens in a fog of cigarette smoke smile

Continuity wasn't too hot in the last episode. The manager's house number plaque was one sold in Homebase, in the nineties! And the well off couple had a cheap set of coffee cups from the 70s.

Apart from that I quite enjoy the programme.

I'm still a bit disappointed with it.

Jane10 Tue 19-Jan-16 07:10:13

But that coffee set wasn't cheap in the 1970s. It was the very latest smart design at the time. Think the range was produced by Midwinter. Much copied by cheaper companies and now sadly sold in charity shops for pennies.

J52 Tue 19-Jan-16 07:48:00

It was from the Bull in a China Shop range. My MIL had it. If I had been choosing something for the scene, I think I would have chosen Denby or Portmeirion.

I'm a frustrated set designer, at heart! grin

I didn't enjoy the latest offering and literally lost the plot completely - a tiger- No not really.

Katek Tue 19-Jan-16 11:09:05

I lost count of the body count in Sunday's episode! Was Goggins the keeper in the ramshackle hut in the woods also killed? (Unfortunate choice of name-kept thinking of Mrs Goggins from the post office in Postman Pat) I enjoy Endeavour though and like spotting links and ties to Morse and Lewis. Young estate worker Phillip in Sunday's prog is Hathaway's father.

Charleygirl Tue 19-Jan-16 11:58:06

If I had not enjoyed Morse so much I doubt if I would have continued with Endeavour because the plots become more ludicrous as the weeks go by.

My fiance was a young detective in the mid 1960s and although long hair was fashionable for boys and men, every male in the police force had to have a short back and sides, so Morse would have been carted off to the barber's to have inches chopped off his hair and the clippers run up his neck. Being a shallow teenager, I was embarrassed to have a boyfriend with such short hair. smile

Jalima Tue 19-Jan-16 18:15:01

Young estate worker Phillip in Sunday's prog is Hathaway's father.
I didn't connect that at all, but I haven't been following Lewis lately.

merlotgran Tue 19-Jan-16 18:40:05

I know how you felt,*Sparklefizz*. I had a fiancé who went off to Hendon police college looking like Paul McCartney and came out looking like one of the Kray twins!

It was a short engagement grin

Sparklefizz Tue 19-Jan-16 18:53:24

Love it merlotgran !

Ana Tue 19-Jan-16 18:56:33

You heartless pair! grin

rosesarered Tue 19-Jan-16 19:00:11

They were 'only there for the hair' ...boom boom.?

NanKate Tue 19-Jan-16 20:13:59

I've only just recovered from the snow maze scene in the film the 'Shining' truly scary and now we have a tiger on the loose. LOVED IT grin

AyjayF Wed 20-Jan-16 15:02:55

How do we know Philip is Hathaway's father? What clue did I miss?
