My 91 year old MIL is loving it and singing along. This is brilliant because her dementia means she is usually quiet and unresponsive.

A lot of thought has gone into this! The letter with Honeysuckle Weeks and Lawrence Fox and Ian Lavender reading the memoirs of someone in the Home Guard are very thought provoking.

It's very good, and Chris Evans has improved since the start

The yobs who desecrated the War Memorial are just vile and if they're a sample of the liberal left then God preserve us from them. As for Charlotte Church, presumably she will be donating her millions to the greater good? No, I thought not!!

MIL had one of those letters. DH still has it.

These thickos haven't the brains to realise they would not have freedom of speech if it was not for those who fought and died for that freedom.

It does not give them the freedom to desecrate war memorials.

I think it should have been hosted someone who was more part of that generation than he was.

I know, that's why I was as we have a Labour Assembly.
She won't have to pay the mansion tax now, anyway; hope she may give the eqivalent to a Welsh charity.
'Put your money where your mouth is' is always a good motto.

Perhaps she has been out of the limelight for a while and needs to up her profile.

When I looked at the link, I did not recognise her. I thought they'd got the wrong person. She wants Welsh Independence, not an assembly. She can only get that from the English government, not the Welsh Assembly.

We far as I'm concerned Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can have their independence asap, on the strict understanding that independence means just that and bailing out is not an option - 'sorry, not at home!
For me and a lot of people who lost a parent/ loved one in the last war, desecration of any war memorial is abhorrent, and the scrum who do this quite vile whatever their cause. How different is the attitude of the Dutch who to this day treat war dead with reverence and respect.

Back to the original subject of this thread, I really enjoyed the program, every act/presenter was excellent and re-created what I visualize was the mood of the day. (I was only 6 months old, so struggle to remember)

Yes it was a great programme, I remember so much of that activity, the letters home, and the awful silent sadness which overwhelmed everyone when another life was lost. We hear so much too, about young people and families being evacuated, we do not hear a lot about children like me who did not get evacuated. We used to play in the street, all the children together, and quite suddenly I was alone with very few friends, there was no school, a local teacher opened up her front room for anyone interested, no compulsion. It was a lonely confused time for everyone, young men and dads no longer around, and the constant threat of being made homeless. We forget too, that whole memories were wiped out for some people, treasured photographs and information lost to the bombs, but we have so much to be thankful for.

A moving post; DH has memories of that time too. Sadly, his DF was one of those who did not come back.

DH remembers also the jelly and blancmange at the street parties after the war!

Only saw part of the programme last night but was impressed. However, the programme this morning on BBC1 which included the veteran's parade was very moving and humbling. Amazing men and women!
