Another reason to not have a death penalty

This is so awful… for a country to have a death penalty is bad enough but a botched death penalty is criminal in my opinion

Just awful. I gather she'll have brain damage.

grandMattie Thu 01-Oct-26 06:01:44

It’s horrible.
But… if you have the death penalty, these “modern”, supposedly more humane methods seem to fail far more frequently than the old ones.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:03:27

This barbaric act inflicted on humans is banned on animals in USA.

Animals receive the same single dose as is used in the U.K. which renders them initially unconscious, falling oeacefully “asleep” and then their brain function heart etc is stopped.

But for reasons known only to themselves this is not used risking the person being rendered utterly immobile (paralised’) whilst inflicting appalling pain.

What on earth does that say about the USA’s humanity?

Truly horrific. I thought I read yesterday her execution had been put on hold indefinitely. This latest news sounds appalling. Thank God we don't have any of that here. We made some terrible mistakes when we did have capital punishment. Hanging is also a terrible way to put anyone to death, clearly, after this latest attempt they all are.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 01-Oct-26 07:27:50

I believe the USA is the only country in the civilised world which has the death penalty.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:31:00

No. Singapore do it better. And it is a deterrent there. Extremely low crime rate. It works for heinous crime.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:31:45

Yet Rudakabana is in his cell playing FIFA 27 ….

TerriBull Thu 01-Oct-26 07:32:18

Japan also has it.

Albert Pierrepoint was a master at the long drop. Efficient and effective.

Smileless2012 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:33:04

More than 50 countries retain the death penalty in law or practice.

MawsRosie Thu 01-Oct-26 07:34:05

Not to debate the topic further but if an old much loved dog can be PTS painlessly (and I’ve held all of mine as they simply drifted off) why can’t a similar lethal injection be used on a human being?

Vintagewhine Thu 01-Oct-26 07:39:55

Absolutely horrific, this is not what any country should do to another human regardless of the crime committed. It's barbaric and dehumanising for every single person who is involved in it.

Smileless2012 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:43:15

Medically qualified doctors and nurses are not allowed to administer the lethal dose due to major medical ethics which no doubt was why this happened.

Peacelilydilly Thu 01-Oct-26 07:43:43

Perhaps the victim's family would disagree, perhaps they would want the killer to suffer, perhaps they would think this is justice/karma.

I fully agree, this is nothing but horrific, the stuff of nightmares. Isn’t the USA supposed to be a civilised country!
One of the cruellest things is the fact that they keep people on death row for 30 odd years, as in this case. Surely, if they feel a death penalty is warranted, it should be carried out swiftly. The whole thing is barbaric.

That renders you the same as the killer.

We are above that. Or at least should be.

Oreo Thu 01-Oct-26 07:51:06

This does happen occasionally and in my view the most humane thing to do now is to administer a lethal dose of morphine.

It’s better than being tortured for a while then beaten to death as this killer did to another girl in the past.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:54:32

Or will she be pardoned after such an horrific bungle? She has been in jail for 30 years now - longer than some of our ‘lifers’.

Well said, Whitewavemark2. I cannot believe such barbaric practices are legal anywhere that claims to be civilised.

I’m talking about ‘civilised’ countries, plenty of so called third world countries have the death penalty.

Luckygirl3 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:56:13

This is utterly horrific.
She should never have been on death row.
She had bipolar disorder and PTSD: "
Pike was physically and sexually abused by several of her mother's husbands and boyfriends, and raped several times, once when she was 11 and again aged 17. Later, it was discovered that she was repeatedly raped as a toddler by her grandmother's boyfriend."
How can someone so ill and traumatised regulate their behaviour?

What she did was horrific ... that is not in question ... but a civilised society has to find a civilised way of dealing with this.

As for this botched execution and subsequent resuscitation, there are no words. What can they be thinking?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 01-Oct-26 07:57:38

Dignitas use the same method as vets. Morphine is not the lethal drug of choice because of its unpredictability.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 01-Oct-26 08:01:19

There are lots of heinous crimes when my heart says the death penalty is appropriate, then my head gives a reality check.

The death penalty is state sanctioned murder, makes that country no better than the person they are executing.
