Average adults

In the Telegraph Earth News section, there's a graphic that will tell you where you are in the world's average adult weight.

I'm lighter than "the average adult" in 167 countries, heavier than "the average adult" in 10 countries, and weigh about the same as "the average adult"in Ethiopia.

Right. I'm off to read the Indie and the Grauniad to see what newsful gems they have today.

absentgrana Thu 21-Jun-12 10:53:53

I don't know what I weigh so I shan't bother to read the article.

Anagram Thu 21-Jun-12 11:35:56

Me neither! We all know Bags is a super-sylph so there's no point depressing myself! wink

soop Thu 21-Jun-12 12:17:07

Anagram If I didn't love her so much, I'd be green with envy

glassortwo Thu 21-Jun-12 12:45:02

No l wont read that article, dont need it rubbed in grin

jeni Thu 21-Jun-12 12:45:20

I am envy

AlieOxon Thu 21-Jun-12 13:31:46

I just got told at the doctors that I had lost a little - enough to take me out of the 'obese' range....
Thanks...I think....

JessM Thu 21-Jun-12 13:39:42

Such flattery will get them nowhere allie I suspect.
Not on strike then?
My DH got miffed with wiifit when he concluded that the little Japanese person with the squeaky voice inside the box would never think that he was anything less than obese because his big heavy bones and big heavy legs would not come into the equation, however much fat he lost.
There are some people for whom body mass index is not a good guide smile

absentgrana Thu 21-Jun-12 13:46:01

JessM True, but they are generally serious athletes like Matthew Pinsett (is that anything like the right spelling?) or rugby players. I suspect wiifit doesn't quite cut the mustard.

yogagran Thu 21-Jun-12 14:04:29

I had a look at this article too and was feeling quite pleased with myself when I found that I was lighter than the average adult in 109 countries and heavier than the average adult in 68 countries -- but then I realised that they don't take into account your height, sex or age so perhaps it's just a little misleading. Fun though grin

yogagran Thu 21-Jun-12 14:08:18

Then I went to the both ends of the scale and was amused that the heaviest people are in Micronesia Perhaps these islands should be re-named?

Actually - I'll admit that I didn't know that there were a group of islands with that name sad

Jacey Thu 21-Jun-12 14:36:36

Bags can I have the link please? [idiot] emoticon ...as don't know how to find it blush

Anagram Thu 21-Jun-12 15:37:02

Here you are, Jacey (just Google it!)

www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/earthnews/9345086/The-worlds-fattest-countries-how-do-you-compare.html

Ha, ha! I just did it myself and it said I was lighter than the average adult in 177 countries and heavier than the average adult in none! I'd entered 10 as my weight, thinking in stones, so it thought I weighed 10lb!

blush

Bags Thu 21-Jun-12 16:05:25

Good one, nag! wink

Jacey Thu 21-Jun-12 16:06:40

Thanx Anagram

Jacey Thu 21-Jun-12 16:22:50

Interesting ...but did wonder about the accuracy in that numbers in each country that had actually been weighedhmm and agree with yogagran about height, age and sex factors.

But liked the final comments in article ...re comparison of North America to Asia

vampirequeen Thu 21-Jun-12 20:51:41

I appear to be bigger than everyone in the world lol

Anne58 Thu 21-Jun-12 21:16:45

I'm 130 lbs, so bigger than some, smaller than some, which seems about par for the course.

But agree that it's all a bit off without taking into account height etc.

I mean, if I was 3ft 6", I'd be a right porker, but if I was 6ft 6", I might fall through a drain cover.

Unless of course I had sticky out ears, which I don't.

yogagran Thu 21-Jun-12 23:29:48

Oh phoenix that made me laugh - thanks for that grin

soop Fri 22-Jun-12 12:00:16

phoenix grin you're so sensible. Haven't a clue whether or not I'm nudging "average" or a fair stone over...does it matter? Can I be bothered to tiddle with calories and run myself ragged in order to be average? Nah! I'll settle for what I am...far from perfect but perfectly acceptable.

absentgrana Fri 22-Jun-12 12:22:49

I was so intrigued when Bags posted this yesterday, I actually went out of my way to weigh myself (awful phrasing – sorry). I checked the article and am heavier than the average adult in 65 countries. My BMI is 20, so I can only assume that those 65 countries are ones stricken by famine and other disasters.

Bags Fri 22-Jun-12 12:26:37

I think my BMI is 20 as well, absent, so I guess I'm just smaller than you, and a lot of other adults all over the world hmm

Not that I feel small! In my life I loom large!

absentgrana Fri 22-Jun-12 12:35:28

I'm 5 feet 9 inches and match the average Algerian adult Bags. grin

jeni Fri 22-Jun-12 12:37:37

Mine is 27.5 sad ie overweight but not obese! I'm trying honest, but being immobile doesn't help! (neither does the food on cruises.grin)

dorsetpennt Fri 22-Jun-12 13:30:17

Like absentgrana I don't weigh myself, too depressing! I'm 5 Foot 7 inches so maybe the size of slightly smaller Algerian due to my being 2 inches shorter then absentgrana. I'm not fat - just pleasingly plumb as my Mother used to say. Elephants havn't started to throw buns at me yet.
