Roseandlilac your sleeping description reminded me of when a friend and I slept under the stars on Dartmoor and in the night, unnoticed by us, we rolled down a slope and ended up hanging over the edge of a dried up stream. Not quite the same situation I know but it brought back a memory I'd forgotten for years so thank you for that! smile

Good morning everyone from a different bit of mid Essex! I’m at DD1’s now for the week, looking after her dog while they’re on holiday. I think their house may be marginally cooler than mine, a hot week is forecast.

rosesandlilac I’m pleased your DS is helping you this weekend. I find it hard to sleep propped up on pillows and always end up sideways across the bed.

bellasnana, enjoy dinner this evening.
I hope all those who are entertaining today have a great time catching up with family and friends.

nannyjan enjoy your holiday in Lyme Regis! One of our favourite places.

Have the best day you can everyone.

R&L perhaps try wedging a pillow under your knees? Himself had to sleep semi upright with his oesophageal stent and found this helped.

Greyduster Sun 09-Aug-26 07:47:06

Good morning, Michael and all GNs. It’s cool in South Yorkshire at the moment but we are in for another warm dry week😩. It will be the death knell for my garden.

DS and DiL came down yesterday and we had a nice lunch at a local pub. I asked him to check my car tyres for me as I had a warning message on the dash. He used both his tyre pressure monitor to check, and then mine and said the tyres were fine. It’s not the first time this car has cried wolf over some perceived fault.

DD and her menfolk are coming over later for lunch so I will have had plenty of company this weekend. I’ll make strawberry sponge flan for pudding.

Have the best day you can folks.

Good morning from an overcast W Kent where it promises to be over 30* today.
A quiet day with DD1, lunch and maybe sit in the garden. I hope to tidy around a bit
We visited DS and family yesterday morning and saw GC, so DD has managed to see everyone during her stay
Best wishes for a peaceful day

Good morning from sunny Suffolk which like many of you I think,am wishing I could wake up to a cool breeze and rain. Our pond has nearly dried up totally so I’ve put out a large bowl of water which I hope the family of moorhens can at least drink from,if not swim in.

DH and I are off to a Glen Miller orchestra concert tonight at Snape Maltings .it is sold out and is the original GM band. DH loves their music and, whilst I’m not a huge fan,I’ll enjoy the evening I’m sure.

Til then it will be a day spent in the cooler parts of the house and having a quiet day.

Good to hear that R&L is being cared for this weekend which must help recovery and feeling better. Hope others with worries/ ill health have an easy day.

Good morning all from a very wet Glasgow.
What is this heatwave, you are all complaining about?
I bet you are all jealous! ☂️🌧🧥

Gingster, I cannot believe it is fifteen month's since your DH's stroke. 💕

Nothing much to report, DH is still struggling. Thankfully, he remembers nothing of his collapse behind the shower room door, nor his procedure on Friday.
DD and SIL are on holiday and celebrating their wedding anniversary They know nothing about what has happened, for DD would have come rushing back, when there is nothing to be done.
I will update them, when they reurn.

A school friend of DH's had seen him with me and said DH looked wandered, meaning he looked as if he was a bit confused. That upset me.

On a lighter note. My sacristan friend was at Mass last night and having been on holiday, came to ask how DH was.
He went to give me a hug, but the velcro on my splints stuck to his sweater.
His wife appeared, she is a scary woman only to find me locked in an embrace with her husband. I couldn't release my hands from his back. 😱
I am such a hussy!🤣

I need to go down and help at the later morning Mass, there is a Baptism and we are missing a sacristan. Normally, I would go to both masses, but I am trying to curtail, what I do.
I had a lovely New dress laid out, however, change of plan, a sweater is required. 😔

I have roasted a chicken and will make Chicken Maryland for DH, to tempt him to eat, it's a favourite of his.

R&L, pleased to hear your DS is looking after you.💐

Have a lovely day, folks. Buona Domenica!!!

Good morning all from a bright North Leicestershire.

DD2 and family arrived yesterday and we had a good catch up. Then DS2 arrived and we all had a good chat. We then ordered fish and chips to be delivered. They took 90 minutes to arrive so DH is composing a mildly complaining email. We rarely have them delivered - dh prefers to order on line and then go to collect.

Morning, sun and cloud in S Hants, 21 already.
Pleased your son is there Roses.
Lots of family visits today, my son and gf called in yesterday, she’d been at work, nursery ‘graduation’, I remember our grandaughter’s.
Quiet day today, roadworks still disrupting our village, the traffic queues are trying.
Have a decent day all.

Good morning from sunny Stockport.
I have slept well after removing the heart monitor, I have red bumps where the electrodes were placed but thankfully the itching has subsided.
We decided to have a bbq last Erving, it was a disaster from start to finish.
The bbq itself was missing a part, couldn’t locate it so my S cooked inside, younger GS set the table outside and we sat down, every wasp from a radius of several miles joined us.
Older GS who is Autistic and just plain awkward when it suits him decided that the wasps had landed on every item of food , he and I went inside to the conservatory, he hared every everything .
His dad got cross , I tried to keep the peace then his dad got very upset as he knows his job seems so impossible and he dreads the future.
It didn’t end well. I wished so much I hadn’t suggested it.
They are going away for a few days tomorrow, I am looking forward to the peace.
Gingster if your H just tried a scooter I am sure he would be happy, mine gives me a degree of independence.
Enjoy the day if you can everyone.

Good morning from sunny Leicestershire.

We went to our local Heritage centre yesterday and sat on their lovely patio.
I have to admit to loving the heat even though the garden doesn’t.

Not much on today although I am meeting friends for a game of Scrabble no doubt in her lovely garden.

Pleased you are being looked after Rosesandlilac.
Wishing everyone the best day possible.

latedecember1963 Sun 09-Aug-26 09:22:38

Gingster, would your DH consider hiring a scooter to try it?

My MiL hired mobility items before buying to see what suited her best.

We used a company called Millercare, who brought things to her house to try when needed.
They were really helpful and didn't push a 'hard sell'. I'm not sure if they're a national company, or just local to us.

RosesandLilac Sun 09-Aug-26 09:37:12

I’ve asked DS to stop making me laugh, it’s painful Ashcombe!
He’s not a dog lover and tiddler is doing her hardest to entice him to rub her tummy. Honestly I don’t know who’s giving the best side eye 😅
The more he tries to ignore her the more she persists until he gives in. Daft pair!

hollysteers Sun 09-Aug-26 09:39:09

Good morning from Sunnyside Sandhills northwest coast.
A domesticated day yesterday, apart from a little watercolour painting, arranging holiday insurance and reading a difficult Dostoyevsky in the garden.

I had a long FaceTime with my sister in the south, we can talk till the cows come home, having many interests in common and she’s coming to stay for a few days at the end of next week.

Yes, that’s a tiring time coming up * Ashcombe*, I know what it’s like, but there’s no business like show business!

I’m off to an antique fair this afternoon and my artist friend’s open mic tonight, when I will put my glad rags on.
Nice to have your capable DS with you RosesandLilac and thoughts to all🌺

Good morning all from the Scottish Borders.
Raining!
Half the world is in Edinburgh to escape the heat. They were joined by me going to the Botanic gardens for a Forager's tour.

It was perfect there and I learned so much about what you can and can't eat in nature from acorn-flour bread to pine cones syrup and lime -tree berry "chocolate"

I was whacked by the time I got home and watched Ann Droid on the Tele.

I'm so glad you are being looked after Rosesandlilac while you convalesce.

I hope your household has a better day Marydoll 🤗

Here, a roof inspection ordered by my house purchasers is happening this afternoon.

I'm having a serious think about the do-er upper house I like, though realise it's not sensible. but when was I ever sensible
What do they say - there's no fool like an old fool.
I may discuss it with my DC before making an offer...

Dare I say make the most of the good weather. It surely can't last.

The photos are juniper berries essential for making gin. And blue pine cones from a Korean tree.

Have a good day everyone.

A rather late morning all from West Oxfordshire. It’s going to be hot.

I overslept until 9 am and then lost the post I’d written!

MD - I had a bad reaction to the colonoscopy preparation last year. It was a different mixture to the first couple of times I had the procedure. Apart from being horribly sick I fainted. OH was out and I came to on the hall carpet with the two cats sat watching me rather bemusedly.

Have a good day . Good to hear you’re being well looked after R&L.

Litterpicker Sun 09-Aug-26 10:27:09

Good morning from sunny as ever West Sussex by the sea.

I slept well after two busy days. I looked after DGD, 7, on Friday. She doesn’t believe in a moment’s inaction. It was too hot for much walking so we took a bus to nearer the sea and enjoyed a paddle on the pebbly beach. On the way via a park she showed me a geocache hidden behind a storage shed. She was upset to find the original paper that she had written her name on had been replaced by a new piece so she wrote her name again and we replaced the jar. Yesterday I was at a local summer fun day, helping on a stall publicising the charity I volunteer with. We had art materials for the children and they created colourful pictures which we pegged to a string line behind the stall to dry. My co-volunteers were amused by the artwork created on the back of my T-shirt when I repeatedly brushed against the wet paintings 😂

Greyduster, we have the same problem with our car’s warning alerts. It is going to the garage to be ‘reset’ on Monday

Marzipan, I love that observation of the shimmer of sun on the underside of the gulls. Your patio looks lush and lovely in spite of this drought.

RosesandLilac, it is good to hear you are being looked after this weekend and are on your way to recovery from your op.

I hope your wish for rain is granted soon Mick and maybe the southern sunshine could move to Scotland for a bit 😊

EkwaNimitee Sun 09-Aug-26 10:34:59

A late Good morning to you Mick and everyone. It's raining lightly in Carlisle, nevertheless, I have been out for a walk. I've managed to up my pace in spite of the calf muscle which is very slowly improving.

Yesterday I popped into Sainsbury's, came back to a long phone chat with my sister followed by a spot of gardening. I removed a couple of unsatisfactory plants and then spent the rest of the day idling, mostly with the papers.
Today, no gardening but I may do a little job or two and possibly start a new book after I've finished the papers.

Bella I know what you mean about the days passing alarmingly quickly. I'm glad it's not just me. I've been feeling that the days, Monday, Tuesday etc come round twice a week!

I wish you all a pleasant Sunday.

Good morning Michael and all GN's on yet another hot still morning in North Yorkshire. I am up and showered but definitely could have done with the equivalent of WD40 for humans today. (That used to be our "go to" for everything that creaked!)

I am trying to start this week in a different way, by making no plans at all, but just doing whatever jobs I feel up to doing as and when I see them - or when they annoy me enough to sort them. So have been sat reading all your posts. Yesterday was another frustrating day, of total inability in making any decisions. Later in the afternoon I ventured out on the yellow peril to get the Yorkshire Post, and as it was quieter, I had a ride around, looking at menus in various pubs and cafes, with the thought that it had been a long time since I ate out, that I might treat myself. Huh! I couldnt even see anything that appealed and gave up and came home and ended up with a very "cordon bleu" beefburger with onions. Mind you it was an Aberdeen Angus one that I had bought of course , in the reduced box, so it was actually quite good. Not something I eat often.

On my ride around the town I came across the Punch and Judy man just packing up. They had had a "seaside" for the weekend, where there was sand and deck chairs etc etc set up for families, all free , so that it gave people who couldnt go to the coast , a chance to enjoy such things. It had been very popular so they said, but it was in a square with no shade anywhere. I went to chat to the punch and judy man, and asked how things had gone. He wasnt local, but from nearby, and I told him about the park on the other side of the high street, which had a childrens swing park etc and that it had grass and seats and shade , where on another occasion he might like to try there. He was pleased to learn about it, and said he would go and have a look round there before he left, so he might return there on some future date.

More than 40 years ago, I was living for a time on the edge of Manchester, and the council had good plans in the summer holidays for various things to go to the parks. They had a very good Punch and Judy man, and I took my son and his friend to it. There were quite a few children with parents there, but the adults were not joining in at all and the children did nt seem to know the age old calls of "He s behind you" etc. I sat with the children and my son of course knew all the calls etc and we got them all joining in and enjoying being a part of it. Throughout the summer , we would look and see what was on in the parks and go and watch the Punch show. The man doing it was very good, and he used to look round , while he was setting up, and if he saw me there he would smile and wave. We chatted one time when he was packing up and he said he was pleased to see me , as so often the parents wouldnt join in, and the children enjoyed it so much more taking part. Things like that and the joys of the first trip to the panto , are part of growing up , and I am sorry for children that dont get that opportunity to be part of it.

On my way home , on a street close to home, I saw a couple getting 2 children from their car and starting to go up a path to a house, so I called out to the mum and making sure the children didnt hear, told her that it was open today, if they were visitors. She hadnt known about it and was very pleased as they were staying with granny so they will be going today. I do find being on the yellow peril does allow me to speak to people, when you wouldnt stop in the car and chat.

It is good to know you are doing well RosesandLilac and hope you have a good day. I am glad that you are having a quieter day GrandMattie and hope it helps you to feel better .Gingster, I have never managed to get down to RHS Hyde yet but may get there one day. Perhaps if you tell DH some of the tales of the yellow peril it might encourage him to try something. A more devious plan might be if you were away somewhere quite hilly, where you can hire buggies, and he might be persuaded to try one there. It is always so difficult when you can see how much better it would be for someone, but they resist it. My husband needed to use a stick but refused to even try one, until one day he absolutely fell flat on some cobbles, after which I insisted he used one. He begrudgingly took one with him, and was then at least nice enough to say how much better it was and that he felt more secure and able to walk more normally. Or perhaps, if you visited family, they might be able to hire one and persuade him to try it. Good luck trying anyway. When we are on the outside looking in , we can often see clearer. I think the other thing is that we all think that problems we have will disappear and we will be back to being able to do what we did before. That acceptance that things wont go back to previous abilities is difficult to acknowledge, is hard. I have trouble doing this myself, I know. Oh Marydoll I hope you have a good sunday and do wish we could send each other a parcel of weather, swap your rain for my sunshine!

Ah well time for some coffee and see if I can get the bones moving and get a bit done. Hope you all have a good day, and for most of us wish you a good heavy shower!

Blossoming Sun 09-Aug-26 10:53:38

Good morning everyone from sunny 19° Lancashire.

A shorter walk today. MrB and I have been for a walk down to the Dock gates. As the gates are open there’s no footbridge and no access to the woodland path, so we walked back along the dockside. There are around 25 shelduck in the dock at the moment instead of the usual 2 or 3.

Wishing you all a good day whatever you’re doing 🌹
