Whether they are banned or simply stop contributing it seems this happens reasonably often. It is a shame ,particularly when someone who has been a ‘regular’ is banned and most of us have no idea what caused it. A recent person to be banned never, as far as I am aware, transgressed . Sometimes I think someone with opposing views complains and causes a banning quite unnecessarily and we are the poorer for it. It would be very boring indeed if we all held the same views on everything.

I've now found out who it is and to say I'm shocked is an understatement! I know this poster is a kind, informed person who has only ever added value to threads, and has a lovely sense of humour. I've never seen an offensive post from her. I really can't believe she has received multiple warnings as we are being told is the norm before a banning. I implore GN to reconsider.

I have “implored”for GSM a couple of times, they just don’t care….🤷‍♀️

Luckygirl3 Tue 26-May-26 18:23:06

I was not sad to see one person booted off some years ago. She was almost stalking me and trying to find out exactly where I lived. Kept posting photos etc of where she thought I might be. It did not feel benign. I did not report it but I assume HQ spotted what was going on and dealt with it.

I am sorry that a valued poster has had to leave. I do not know what might have caused this.

More or less what I sent to HQ.

Dear GNs moderators/HQ, I too ask you to please re-consider.

This poster concerned has never, to the best of my knowledge, flaunted the rules knowingly and I’ve seen worse things from people still members.

Please reassess your decision. thanks

I certainly miss GSM. She was forthright, no nonsense and told it as it was. I never ever knew her to be unkind to anyone - she certainly helped/guided posters when they needed her.

The banned poster was also much respected and quite witty with it. Again, I never knew her to be unkind to others.

It's a shame that the minority of complaining posters can't grow up and just get on with others instead of attacking, patronising, demoralising and generally raising one's hackles as soon as you see their name.

For those of you missing GSM, I am in regular contact with her and I’m sure she browses these threads as well
She has no idea really why she was banned. She has tried several times to get back and has mainly been ignored. I did write to the moderators on her behalf and was told they would not discuss other posters with me.
I think it’s awful, as so many of you do miss her and her very welcome input into many threads. I wish the moderators would look at this thread and maybe reconsider!!

Indeed we would, welcome her back as she was one of the lynchpins of this site - all good wishes sent, she is missed.

Come on, moderators do the right thing and reinstate GSM….

I wholeheartedly agree that GSM should be invited back to contribute her very considerable experience and knowledge. We also enjoy some controversy. After all, we’re all grownups, not primary school children.

I teeter on the edge of dropping out of GN nearly every day.

Don't do that M, I'd miss you on the games thread !

To report a post and not own up to it is cowardly and sneaky.

Tantamount to anonymous bullying

Couldn’t agree more.

A slight detour, but do we know how many people read GNet but don't post? A PP said above that GN is small. I don't think that is the case. I think there must be many many people who read but don't post. I often think Oops when a GN makes a critical remark about a neighbour, family member or associate and their post is quite identifying. You just don't know who is reading this site.
I too have no idea who has been banned. When reading threads I rarely take notice of the name just concentrate on the comment most of the timr.

I think it’s clear that the actual engagement on the site is far too low to actually be able to sustain it with commenters alone. It’s a small community compared to even Mumsnet. By the nature of how “free” platforms/social media sites operate there are far more “viewers” than “posters” as a norm anyway. Gransnet needs ads to generate income, and you can’t attract advertisers unless many eyes will see the adverts. I too think about your point of identifying details, so lately I only post very general personal information. I think it’s safe to say the number of people who only read rather than post is enormous and you never know who is reading.

Who has been banned and why aren't we allowed to say who?
We all remember GSM, and plenty of people mentioning her here as banned, so why can't you say who has been banned now ??

Galaxy Tue 26-May-26 19:27:18

Because someone has tried that and they were deleted.

Casdon Tue 26-May-26 19:29:15

Somebody just told me who has been banned, I can’t believe that has happened to somebody so non controversial, and nice. I feel sad for her that the thread has moved on to talk about somebody else, and I wonder if there is anything to be done to help her return? Maybe the person who reported her could do the decent thing and message Gransnet to request it if you are reading this thread?

Rocketstop2 Tue 26-May-26 19:29:36

Oh dear.

Iam64 Tue 26-May-26 19:32:38

Can we? It seems many of us know who is the latest popular poster to be banned.
I did political disagreements with GSM regularly, despite this we liked each other and recognised we had more in common than in disagreement

I’m finding gnhq mods habit of banning with no reference to allegations or justice. Many have posted here that our cyber friend whose name is known, but not used, has been unfairly treated.

What an we do?

Galaxy Tue 26-May-26 19:33:23

Yes I agree that she was non controversial, I think a few of us have now contacted HQ to complain, state the case, etc but I don't if I am honest think it will do much good. I agree as well we have all probably got diverted into talking about GSM, partly because we can actually name her.

Rocketstop2 Tue 26-May-26 19:33:38

Rocketstop2

Oh dear.

I guess the rest of us will only find out who when we realise that person has had no input for a few days.
The person who has been banned must be feeling quite upset now.Perhaps it will just be a temporary ban ?

Iam64 Tue 26-May-26 19:33:53

That’s a good suggestion Casdon. It seems clear she was targeted

M0nica Tue 26-May-26 19:36:05

GSM was a consstent good and helpful member of GN.

Why does ot always have to be all or nothing. Why cannot people sometimes just be suspended for a week, a month or six months. Obviously there will be times when a ban is the only way forward, but not often.

Galaxy Tue 26-May-26 19:37:36

So there are some posters who when they are warned, etc it doesn't really come as a complete surprise. To be honest I would include myself in that group. But as poster after poster has said that was not at all the general behaviour of this specific person. Honestly it is like Iam64 or Casdon being banned ( sorry you two but it is meant as a compliment). It is weird.

ixion Tue 26-May-26 19:40:47

But people have been reinstated, haven't they, after a concerted campaign by Gransnetters?

What's wrong with a suspension, if punishment is so necessary?

Norah Tue 26-May-26 19:40:59

my views on some subjects are not the same As others.

^ know I’m far from perfect but if I am wrong about something I will always apologise^ As will I but others feel quite differently regarding apologies.

Differences make the world go round. However, I do dislike being questioned when I state a fact - by know it all persons who are incorrect. SMH.

Nothing of opinions is, imo, worth reporting.

She is very upset. Not just because she loves this site but because this ban ( lifetime ban) is totally unjust.

Rosie51 Tue 26-May-26 19:43:21

I've just 'replied' to an old message from the missing poster that was in my inbox and it says 'sent'. So will the site let me message a poster they've banned and will deny access to her messages? Seems more than a little weird.
