Disappearing contributers

I agree, Nanna.
Read a very strange, hate filled comment on a thread yesterday. I questioned what on earth that poster was talking about but didn’t report. Better that the opinion remained. People can make up their own minds.

There have recently been several very goading posts where people are just intent on getting others to respond because the poster knows full well that in the current climate lots of people disagree with them.

You can see they are just squaring up for a scrap so the best thing to do is just ignore them and let them rant away to themselves because they will report you as soon as they spot the slightest word you have written that annoys them. 😉

I miss many people who are no longer on here and another good poster gone this week.

How do you know that people have been banned rather than having just withdrawn? Xx

Surely no one’s going to be banned simply for having a different opinion to someone else, and if anybody reported a poster for that reason alone, it wouldn’t be acted upon? Sometimes posters just drop out of GN for their own reasons.

I agree that posts shouldn’t be deleted though unless they’re very offensive.. They should stand to show exactly what was said. I’ve only ever reported obvious spam.

Given our age group, some people disappear because they have died. Sometimes a family member posts the news, but, I think, mainly they do not.

I am afraid that I don't necessarily think that people who have disappeared have necessarily been banned. Sometimes it becomes clear that a particular person has been banned but many will disappear for their own reasons.

I agree Nanna8. Yesterday was shaping up to be a proper goad fest and someone's fingers were extremely quick off the mark with, at one point, four deletions within the first 15 posts of a thread. This I believe was because a couple of posters had the temerity to post something other than what the thread was about. So what ? Threads often go off track, but they come back again. It almost felt like someone was just sat waiting to pounce and they did. Childish beyond belief.

I have to say I don't notice if someone does not contribute. I don't nessasarily think it is because they are banned though. Illness, death, or just being fed up with it are also reasons.

If there’s a member that you’ve exchanged several PMS over the years it’s best that you share email addresses because if you’re banned it’s instant, you have no way of contacting that member.

I do notice sometimes when people disappear, I used to have fantastic arguments with Trisher/Glorianny and she disappeared, I miss her! I noticed GSM s absence as well.

I think some must just lose interest as well. When I first joined I felt a bit like just giving up because nobody seemed to notice I was there, with discussions taking place around me rather than with me. It’s not that I’m an attention seeker but it did get to feel a bit like I was the invisible poster. Obviously some have been around for many years and lean towards those they know, I get that, but occasionally is good if we throw other posters a bone.

Fallingstar - I think what happens is that a couple of poisers get locked into a discussion on a particular aspect and bash on with that, ignoring any interjections from others. Don't take it personally!

Just for balance I have had enormous support from Gransnetters over some very difficult years for me.

I think, as M0nica says, some posters may drop out because of illness or they have died.

I once asked after a certain poster because I hadn't heard from them for a while. But there she was all the time, I just hadn't consulted the right threads.

I am sure that far more posters are banned than used to be the case. Years ago GNHQ were much more on top of things and would intervene if stuff was getting too hectic, and by doing so, they were able to calm stuff down. The report button was also something people used extremely rarely.

We were made of sterner stuff back then😀 - I can’t remember the last time I reported someone, not like the youngsters/snowflakes today whose fingers appear to be constantly hovering over the report button. ❄️

Although on the other hand - none of us are getting any younger.

I’m genuinely shocked. Like others I read grumpy imo goady few posts this morning. Thankfully, the report button wasn’t used . Surely we are all old enough to disagree without shouting or fallin out
