My then 5 year old son received an Oxfam Goat, from his Grandparents 🐐

A teapot, a bobble hat, a lilac bed jacket or a framed photo of my MIL. All things I have been given over the years.

A cousin- in - law bought me an amaryllis every year . I hate them they give me the creeps. Luckily since my divorce I don’t see her so I don’t get one. Win win! It was always so annoying because I tried to get her something thoughtful every year and she just couldn't be bothered to do the same

Ye gods - this really is goady in the extreme, designed to make anybody who has given any of the things mentioned (or received them) feel small, devoid of taste, naff and generally worthy of mockery.
An Oxfam goat is a much worthier gift than a tacky toy and may be part of helping a child to understand that there are people in the world much worse off than us.
D3 once gave me a beautiful straight sided Japanese style teapotwith 2 matching cups which I love. And novelty socks might at least keep your feet warm.
But of course nobody else rejoices in the impeccable taste of Gransnet do they?

The naffest Christmas gift I ever received was a huge fake pony skin handbag. It was. Incredibly ugly and the clasp was designed to rip the fingers off anyone attempting to open it.

I think that the Aldi socks have Aldimania emblazoned on the side, that's why!

I do realise that, but I don’t think he did at the time as it came without any explanation from his Grandparents & was his only gift from them.

RosiandherMaw I am sorry you are finding the posts on this thread "goady in the extreme". I saw it as a lighthearted invitation to share some awful presents that had the merit of making us laugh. I am sure I have given some people some real clangers in my time that certainly don't reflect impeccable taste on my part..

Often the sheer desperation of having to buy something, anything, for people you don't necessarily know well or understand leads to some unfortunate choices especially if you are on a limited budget.

On the subject of teapots, let's just say some are beautiful some are not.

TwiceAsNice - My friend buys me an amaryllis every year too. I do like them but they only flower for a couple of weeks at most and then sit around as a bulb for the rest of the year. There is only only aq limited amount you can have too.

I don't mind Christmassy socks, but preferably black with a bit of glitter (naff or not!) and definitely just for wearing at Christmas.

Spending money you can ill afford on ‘stuff’, that others don’t want and you have no idea what to buy them.

This is why so much present buying is absolutely pointless.

Agreed with a few friends not to give gifts at Xmas, best thing we did. Martin Lewis first floated this idea a few years ago. In the majority of cases people are relieved rather than getting the hump.

I hinted at wanting a new watch and OH bought me a kitchen timer. It came in a box that raised my expectations and then completely dashed them. He is the most useless present buyer ever fortunately he has other qualities so we are still together after nearly 40 years and we agreed to just buy what we want, when we want it and we do!

Dress from my in laws that was 2 sizes to small and made from horrible material. They said it was to give me incentive to lose weight. I gave it to them back after opening it and that comment. Told my mother in law it more her style .

They gave us money after that..
