When do you take your pills?

Just wondering when it is advisable to take pills? Silly question but I have got to that stage where I have several to take. Do I take them all in one go first thing in the morning? Stagger them? (I forget) or at night before bed? Non of them clash as it happens and they all work on different systemic areas. Of course, I do read the prescription directions but just wondered how people organise themselves.

Depends, my blood thinners are twice a day so I set the alarm on my phone for 9am and 9pm.
BP tablet when I wake up, statin at bedtime.

If unsure google your medications and when is best to take them.I did this for Mum who was taking her meds all over the place.
BP tablets are best in the morning and hour before eating or drinking anything other than water.
Thyroid meds are best taken on their own with an empty stomach.
Statins at bedtime.

It isn't a silly question.
Taking medication as prescribed is important for maximum efficacy. Read the enclosed leaflet with your medication and follow their advice as to times, before or after food etc. I Google my meds to see what they may not agree with. You would be surprised what other tablets and foods you should steer clear of.

It depends on what you're on, the advice is on the literature. I'm on Levothyroxine , the guidance for those is to take them on an empty stomach and leave an hour between taking them and having a coffee, so I take them in the middle of the night when I get up to go to the loo, which is the early hours of the morning, knowing I would have last eaten around 7ish. I take a statin before bed and a non prescribed Vitamin D early evening.

Talk to your Chemist/Pharmacist. They are the experts.
I take mine 17 when I get up ( whatever time that is) and 9 at bedtime. I take mine on an empty stomach with a cold drink and then eat shortly afterwards. Good luck with your routine. hugs

Ask the pharmacist at your local pharmacy. IME they are far more experienced in that field, than GP's and very happy to advise.

Here in Scotland, NHS Scotland is encouraging us to contact the local pharmacy as first port of call for non-urgent symptoms/ common infections. This reduces pressure on GP services, and is faster for patients.

My local pharmacy has redesigned their premises to provide private areas , additional services etc. Win win for everyone.

Thank you very much everyone. I'll speak to my pharmacist who is really helpful.

I'd read that BP tablets were best taken at night so I take mine then. I also have another pill that I take first thing in the morning but that's only for another two weeks.

I have several tablets to take and some are twice a day or whatever, so I have a 7 day box and on sundays go through and put everything in the correct day . If I have had any new tablets in the past, I do read carefully the instructions given with them, and if unsure about any reaction with other tablets would ask the pharmacy to check for me. About every three months or thereabouts when I have a quiet time I just go through the instructions with each tablet to make sure that I have not got into the wrong habit, taking them at the wrong time, or not having enough water with them or whatever.

When I had to have a new tablet for something I took my whole prescription into the pharmacy and asked them to check if there were any contra indications. I went at a quiet time, but thought it was better doing that than having a bad reaction and upsetting the balance I have managed to keep.

Mine all seem to have instructions on the box when to take them - morning or evening, before or after food and so on. My son, who has an orderly mind, made me a handy list of what to take when

Two first thing, Vitamins at lunch time, and two more in the evening

Ask your pharmacist when to take each one - some meds are best taken at a certain time of day. Some are best with food, some before food, some after food and some on an empty stomach between food! Once you've got your list of what to take and when, you can construct your own meds routine. Every Sunday, I sort my pills into a dosette (which the medics rather quaintly pronounce "dossit"). It's a small container divided into 28 compartments 4 per day for seven days (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Bedtime). I'd be lost without it.
