Evening all, and good wishes to you.

I have been thinking about words, generally speaking I love words, such as "concupiscence" and "nidification" (good one to use in a wedding speeech!) I also have a certain fondness for "frock" blush

But there are also words that really grate!

Gusset

Hubby

Turgid

Tumescent

Lounge (as in the room, not the act of lounging!wink)

What are yours?

I also dislike the word lavatory
There was a Gent's lavatory, in our town when I was growing up, it was eventually closed down due to the unsavoury going ons in it.

Unsavoury, I like that! grin

Kalu The envelope that is pushed is the air pressure outside a plane, although I rather doubt the the people who use this expression realise that. It is neither stationary nor stationery.

Glut
Phlegm
Snot
Hawk (as in spitting/coughing)

oldgoat Thu 14-Mar-19 06:20:11

I growl every time a television presenter refers to people from the UK as 'Brits'

Marelli Thu 14-Mar-19 07:02:55

The term 'suck it up' is horrid, too. ?

1inamillion Thu 14-Mar-19 07:03:03

What a great thread Phoenix and agree with hubby and most of the choices already made, particularly-
Moist
You guys/guys
Panties
Slacks
Ace and Epic

I love -
Conflab
Any onomatopoeic words ( hope I've spelt that correctly, it doesn't look right) - like chomp.

1inamillion Thu 14-Mar-19 07:04:43

Hate also ' wear and tear' ?

BlueSapphire Thu 14-Mar-19 07:59:16

Love the French word for twilight - le crepuscule. Did French Romantic poetry at A level and came across it, and it has stuck in my mind; there was a line something like the smell of the eucalyptus trees at twilight, and quite like the word describing that too - terebinthe, (although looking that up now it means turpentine!)

Greyduster Thu 14-Mar-19 08:36:22

I love pusillanimous, tertiary, carnage and muscular.
I hate frock; bust (as in ‘bust size’); panties; crap; and any word that is serially mispronounced, like jewellery and nuclear.

harrigran Thu 14-Mar-19 09:04:05

Loathe 'you guys'.
Innit.
Really toe curling :- ablutions, DH will use it to wind me up, works every time.

Floradora9 Thu 14-Mar-19 10:39:12

Mothers referring to thier sons as " little man " you never hear them refer to girls as their " little women " .

Greyduster Thu 14-Mar-19 11:41:10

Harrigran I used that word to my grandson the last time he stayed here:
“Nanny please may I have my phone for five minutes?”
“When you have been up and done your ablutions!” He hadn’t the faintest idea what I was talking about! It’s a hangover from my military days!

FarNorth Thu 14-Mar-19 12:18:55

I understood 'grochle' (not grockle) to be a fairly hefty shifting of mucus/phlegm in the throat, possibly resulting in a hawk/spit onto the ground.

I dislike the word seam, including when it is part of seamstress. Seem is okay though.

MissAdventure Thu 14-Mar-19 12:21:18

Ah, thank you, FarNorth.
I'm quite put off that word now. blush

grandtanteJE65 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:26:57

My dictionary, Chambers, gives the pronunciation of "halcyon" as "hal-si-on". I don't think I have ever used the word myself.

I hate "crap" and "crappy" and the expression "it's a given". I always want to ask, "A given what?"

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 14-Mar-19 12:34:04

I like 'flibbertigibbet' - not sure if I've spelled that right.
'Gallivanting' is another good one.
I hate the word 'busty' to describe a well-proportioned lady.

LadyGracie Thu 14-Mar-19 12:35:45

I can’t abide ‘ain’t’, my sister and my DH say it to wind me up.
I love ‘cwtch’ and ‘snuggle’ and another word I’m too ladylike to list.

Oldandverygrey Thu 14-Mar-19 12:44:27

Hun, Babe, Snuck, Poorly, Fat, a few of my pet hates.

thecatgrandma Thu 14-Mar-19 16:06:00

Wellness. Discharge. ‘You guys’ Any version of night, spelt NITE. Also moist.?

Bathsheba Thu 14-Mar-19 16:28:11

you never hear them refer to girls as their " little women "

No, because they call their girls their "little princess" ?. But equally, you never hear them call their boys their "little prince" ?

But worse than any of that, in my opinion, is something that I've seen creeping in, possibly from the US or Australia, and that's calling their child "my little" or "my small", with no qualifying noun <sigh>

Bathsheba Thu 14-Mar-19 16:31:28

I dislike the word seam, including when it is part of seamstress.

But that is what the join of two fabrics is called. It's not a nickname, or a slang word. What do you say, then, if your trouser seam comes apart? How would you describe what has happened without using that word? confused

judylow Thu 14-Mar-19 16:36:22

Gusset is my pet hate too and fur baby (though I love cats).

bluebirdwsm Thu 14-Mar-19 16:41:36

Quirky. I flinch every time the word is used...usually in relation to a house.

And the expression 'it ticks all the boxes'....how many times do I have to hear it.

My adult son hates the word 'nippy' in relation to the weather and how cold it is... and has done since a child, it's quite funny to see his reaction, which is almost rage!
