Evening all, and good wishes to you.

I have been thinking about words, generally speaking I love words, such as "concupiscence" and "nidification" (good one to use in a wedding speeech!) I also have a certain fondness for "frock" blush

But there are also words that really grate!

Gusset

Hubby

Turgid

Tumescent

Lounge (as in the room, not the act of lounging!wink)

What are yours?

Bathsheba Wed 13-Mar-19 21:23:13

I love kismet, halcyon, jambalaya, languid, susurration, murmur.

I hate pustule, globule, and many already mentioned such as masticate, phlegm, mucous, moist ?

Grannybags Wed 13-Mar-19 21:34:53

Sorry don't like frock

Any word relating to nose content!

Kid

Vomit

Slacks - do people still say that instead of trousers?

lemongrove Wed 13-Mar-19 21:39:15

Purple is a lovely word, so is plummy.
Delicious is nice too, also mystical.

Ugly words: babe, slug, groin, spittle, knuckle, smirk.

Kalu thank you for reminding me how much I dislike the word "posh", along with the phrase "slap up" when applied to a meal!

gillybob Wed 13-Mar-19 22:17:30

Trews (as in nylon trousers)
bottom (instead of bum)
Tinkle (as in “I’m just going for a...)
Little girls or boys room (sounds so pervy)
My mums favourite .....Funny woman/or funny man (as in someone gay/lesbian/homosexual) grrrrr
Briefs (as in knickers)

Who started this ? phoenix I’m going to be up all night now ! grin

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 22:18:15

gillybob Wed 13-Mar-19 22:25:42

Chewbacca Wed 13-Mar-19 22:28:06

Panties is awful. Who says that? confused

Doodle Wed 13-Mar-19 22:32:44

My goodness missadventure I was just scrolling down to list my pet hate and you got there just before me.
Panties yuck.

My pet conference hates..
Innovative
Blue sky thinking
Push the envelope (I’d tell you where I’d like to shove the bl** envelope)
Like ...as in it was like awesome. Actually I hate the word awesome too.
You’ve got me going now phoenix I’ll be thinking of this all night.
You guys... don’t like that either.
Lavatory
Pissant
(I detect a theme emerging) ?

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 22:40:37

Willy is a horrible word for adults to use, I think.
A 'healthcare professional' I worked with would actually write it on reports.

Chewbacca Wed 13-Mar-19 22:44:01

I'm not keen on "scab" either, when I come to think of it. hmm

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 22:48:03

I knew someone would pick that...

annodomini Wed 13-Mar-19 23:00:27

Like the OP, I abhor 'hubby'; and I also dislike 'kiddies'- the word not the creatures.

Kalu Wed 13-Mar-19 23:00:45

Doodle. No matter how far you push the envelope, it’s still stationary?

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 23:01:33

grin oh, very droll.
I like droll.

FarNorth Wed 13-Mar-19 23:19:04

Armpit - I use the Scottish word - oxter.

FarNorth Wed 13-Mar-19 23:23:08

I like most words with 'amp' in them, example is very nice.
I never liked names ending in 'ene' or 'ine' or even 'een', like Eileen, Marlene etc.

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 23:25:15

halcyon
I must try and casually drop it into conversations now.
MissA try not to gush, though, when you do
wink

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 23:26:20

FarNorth there was an Australian song which included lots of (Australian) girls' names ending in 'ine' or 'ene' but I can't remember who sang it.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 23:29:09

I loved 'grockle' which I only heard in Scotland.
Its a throaty cough, I think?

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 23:32:13

Grockles are tourists to Devon and Emmets are tourists to Cornwall - aka the plastic mac and sandal brigade.

Jangran99 Wed 13-Mar-19 23:59:14

I've always heard a throaty cough called a cruckle here in Scotland.
I hate pimple.
I love the word fritillary

Marydoll Thu 14-Mar-19 00:14:32

Dislike crotch

Love serendipity
scunnered

Chewbacca Thu 14-Mar-19 00:18:05

Isn't it odd that the words most disliked are those that tend to refer to the nether regions! grin

I quite like "vestibule" but people don't seem to have them these days. They have "hallways" and "porches".
