Evening all, and good wishes to you.

I have been thinking about words, generally speaking I love words, such as "concupiscence" and "nidification" (good one to use in a wedding speeech!) I also have a certain fondness for "frock" blush

But there are also words that really grate!

Gusset

Hubby

Turgid

Tumescent

Lounge (as in the room, not the act of lounging!wink)

What are yours?

BlueBelle Thu 14-Mar-19 16:43:53

Hun
Hubby
Fur baby
Rainbow bridge
And now Spaffing ugh

When I was a child I was fascinated by the thought of feinting, collapsing gently on the floor with shock or other such feeling.

Then I discovered the word was spent fainting, feinting was some thing else entirely. Such a mundane spelling, such a mundane word, who on earth could want to faint?

Atqui Thu 14-Mar-19 17:06:45

Pimple
Stunning
Tits (except birds)

Framilode Thu 14-Mar-19 17:25:38

Floral tribute, harrassment with the emphasis on the second syllable, most certainly, with respect.

Grammaretto Thu 14-Mar-19 18:39:24

You've reminded me of the words I dislike.
I hate UK. I live in Scotland, England, Wales, etc. I prefer Britain or Great Britain.
I hate isms. Judaism, veganism, pacifism.
I dislike devastated unless someone is genuinely devastated.
I don't like differentiated .
Nice words:
Healthy

Guddle
Horrid words;
Slime *are there any nice words starting with sl?)
Fur baby

Chewbacca Thu 14-Mar-19 18:43:41

Yes Grammaretto...... slim and slender. Neither of which will ever apply to me!

FarNorth Thu 14-Mar-19 18:44:31

Slim, Grammaretto?

sharon103 Thu 14-Mar-19 19:06:33

Cops instead of police

I love the words cosy and snuggle

Jalima1108 Thu 14-Mar-19 19:09:44

I hate UK. I live in Scotland, England, Wales, etc. I prefer Britain or Great Britain.
That is so interesting! I have just run off a copy of what constitutes the United Kingdom, Great Britain and the British Isles for the DGC!
They are all different, Grammaretto

the word lipstick make my stomach heave!!!

Kalu Thu 14-Mar-19 21:18:32

Absent I didn’t think an explanation of the mathematical and engineering original terminology of envelope being a boundary was necessary in my post.

It was a jokey line I have heard by some after a very boring meeting whereby ‘pushing the envelope’ has been done to death?

Grammaretto Thu 14-Mar-19 21:48:25

Slim and slender. Ok I suppose. Sleek?
Slap, slop, slip, sludge, slit, slice, slush, sleet, slake, slay, slow, slime, slurry.
There are far more horrid ones.

Chewbacca Thu 14-Mar-19 22:05:50

grin Grammaretto, that made my laugh out loud! So how about slink, sleep, sliver, slalom and slather, just to redress the balance!

Marmight Thu 14-Mar-19 22:13:10

I think I have ‘favourite’ words for a while, then discard them in favour of my new words. Recently I’ve liked ‘equidistant’ and ‘dispiriting’.

Words I don’t like are ‘soulmate’ (ugh) and ‘remoaners’ (disrespectful).

Ngaio1 Thu 14-Mar-19 23:00:35

I hate Hubby, overly, majorly, 110 percent, like, hun, basically, babe (used for another adult), horseriding, horsebackriding!!.

ginny Fri 15-Mar-19 03:06:27

I think pregnant is an ugly sounding word.

labazsisslowlygoingmad Fri 15-Mar-19 17:42:58

hate the word gob and any using that word
saliva
gusset
squelch

I don't mind being called Sis by my sister, there's only the two of us. Usually I'm Big Sis and she's Little Sis - sizes are immaterial, but what I can't stand is the instructions on cooking that we have to make sure the food is 'piping hot' !!
What century are we in for God's sake ? A temperature reading is surely the way to go.

NudeJude Fri 15-Mar-19 20:30:56

Cannot stand being called 'hun', or this thing when people are buying a house and they simply must have a 'snug'.

On the other hand I rather like 'moist', it conjures up all sorts.
'Frock', lovely old fashioned word, and to join in with the 'Sl' words, love the word 'Slither'.

FarNorth Fri 15-Mar-19 20:35:28

A whole phrase - "putting our own stamp on it" in property programmes.

Totaldogsbody Fri 15-Mar-19 23:57:49

My daughter hates it when I say the word blouse its a shirt.
I don't like-
Yeast
Sourdough
Carbunkle

Like -
Cantankerous
Jauntily

BradfordLass72 Sat 16-Mar-19 02:03:10

Like:
Halcyon - it's a Kingfisher.
Lollop - to move in an ungainly fashion (hares often lollop)
Callipygian - having beautifully rounded buttocks
Deliquesce - to gradually rot into liquid, as bodies do.

Don't like
Many of the words stated by others, plus.
Crepuscule - the name of one of the gorgeous roses in my garden which does not deserve such a nasty-sounding word. It means dusk or twilight.
Crapulous - overcome with alcohol which in turn may lead to ....
Crap
Shag (nasty, nasty word)

I can highly recommend a very amusing book:

"That's not English : Britishisms, Americanisms, and what make us different" by Erin Moore.

Belly, unless used to describe a cut of pork, as tummy of pork would just sound silly.
