Evening all, and good wishes to you.

I have been thinking about words, generally speaking I love words, such as "concupiscence" and "nidification" (good one to use in a wedding speeech!) I also have a certain fondness for "frock" blush

But there are also words that really grate!

Gusset

Hubby

Turgid

Tumescent

Lounge (as in the room, not the act of lounging!wink)

What are yours?

At the top of this page -

Flip

I don't like that for some reason but I don't know why

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 20:00:24

Gush

I love halcyon, although I have never used it, and don't know how to pronounce it. blush

crazyH Wed 13-Mar-19 20:03:33

Hal - see - yen (I think ?)

Jalima1108 Wed 13-Mar-19 20:04:34

Yes, but say it quickly and the emphasis is on the first syllable

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 20:04:38

Thank you. smile
I must try and casually drop it into conversations now.

I like genuflect, which I heard many times in my Catholic childhood.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 20:12:21

Bulbous is a robust sort of word. smile

Now, theres a thought!

There is a "thing" in the House of Commons where there is a bet/date to get certain words into a speech, a female NO some time back managed this, although I can't remember who it was it what the word was confusedblush

Would be fun to set a GN challenge to include certain words into conversation, but sadly no way of checking!

phoenix Wed 13-Mar-19 20:14:39

"Date"??? Should be "dare" damn tablet!

dragonfly46 Wed 13-Mar-19 20:16:27

Hate kids relating to children.

Love discombobulated.

mcem Wed 13-Mar-19 20:19:36

Did anyone else play buzzword bingo in tedious meetings? Highly unprofessional but fun!
Write down 3 words in the current jargon and score them off as they appear in the inevitably predictable speech!

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 20:23:25

Just don't shout out "Here!" when you get a full house.
Damn, I really wish I had heard of that game.

Chewbacca Wed 13-Mar-19 20:26:33

I've done a similar game in boring meetings mcem, but mine was to mentally tick off how many times the words "ya know" were said. 17 in a 15 minute meeting was the record.

nanny2507 Wed 13-Mar-19 20:28:28

Phlegm..i hate that word it makes me feel sick...and i hate it when people say pacific instead of specific oh my lord that drives me mad

Carolina55 Wed 13-Mar-19 20:32:01

Can’t
Won’t
Unfair
Impossible

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 20:34:22

Mucous.

Chewbacca Wed 13-Mar-19 20:41:08

Urgh yes, mucous is horrible. I prefer snot, rather than mucous.

Viscous conjures up similar images to mucous. Don't like that either.

Excellent thread Phoenix, I haven't shuddered so much in ages! grin

phoenix Wed 13-Mar-19 20:43:52

Um, we used to call it "bull shit bingo" grin

Agree with "phlegm" and "mucous" both rather yuck words!

(And "kids" unless applied to young goats!)

Nico97 Wed 13-Mar-19 20:48:05

I detest the word masticate - yuk !
Love the word mellifluous - grin

phoenix Wed 13-Mar-19 20:49:39

Thank you Chewbacca, I think!

Sorry to have made you shudder, but I do think the odd frivolous, light hearted thread has it's place on GN!

Fennel Wed 13-Mar-19 20:53:22

Hate - backstop.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 20:53:31

Enchanted is a lovely word..
I remember someone on here once saying 'slips' is a stupid word for mens pants.

MissAdventure Wed 13-Mar-19 20:55:53

Lollop.
Not sure if its a word, but it sounds great, for example; "Stop lolloping on the settee! If you're tired, go to bed".

Kalu Wed 13-Mar-19 20:56:52

Posh

Love saying Frock

Chatting with DGDs I mentioned it would soon be time to wear their school frocks..... I don’t think we wear those are our school Granny?. Yes, they do.
