Luckygirl I too was prescribed Lanzoprasol 6 months ago but 3 months ago I changed my diet to Gluten free and have no further symptoms. I'm also a life long vegetarian so that might help.

Yes icanhandthemback I’m a sniffer, then a dipper before giving it a go! Hasn’t failed me yet and it amused me when I worked with youngsters when they informed me that we needed more milk because the sell by date was yesterday. I’d sniff it first, then pour some on my finger and if it tasted ok then it went in my coffee. They didn’t understand that sell-by and use by dates were a relatively recent invention and we didn’t have them in the olden days!

Carolina55, I found that my children worried about use by dates until they were buying food with their own money. The same with value brands which couldn't be eaten because they were so awful! When my children were younger, I used to ask them whether they thought all the bacteria sprung into action on the stroke of midnight when they went to the fridge to find the milk "was off" the day after the use by date!

My DDs always joke about the contents of my fridge. I remind them that I have not changed and they managed to grow up to be halthy adults..despite a bit of out of date food ???

solitaire I cut yeast and gluten from my diet for 3 months. Lived on boled rice & plain yogurt for a week the gradually introducrd more food types over 3 months. Yeast & gluten being the last to add. Also took pro- biotics. After 5 years of painful indigestion, aches & pains and general malaise I was well having, I believe put my gut back into a better balance. I now eat a broad and balanced diet..including gluten..but limit it as we do need it even if intolerant to too much!

Sorry..also meant to say that I react to some items containing gluten and not others. I think it may be more to do with preservatives than gluten.

Lucky girl.. have you tried any of the bio yoghurts/drinks for your gastritis?.. I bought some for my mum who'd had two bad bouts of it and it got rid of the dreadful pain she had the same day.... she's not had any re-occurance since..which was at least a couple of months ago.. maybe it will help...good luck ?

I am someone who virtually ignores sell/eat-by dates, but I am concerned that the yogs felt quite warm when I got back, so I am going to chuck them - goes against the grain with me in a very big way, but things are so precarious here that it is not worth risking rocking the boat in any way.

Live yogs would have been ok I believe. Processed sweet yogs less so..& not real yog imo!

You did the right thing Luckygirl because you were clearly worried about the food. On a one off situation like this why put yourself through lots of anxiety? Put it in the food compost bin (if you have one) and resolve to make sure the fridge door is shut in future. Take care

I read an article recently about the digestive system as a whole and how the microbiology makes such a difference in a way yet to be completely understood by the scientists. An imbalance is thought to be so detrimental that it can cause diabetes, immune disorders, etc. I am somebody who suffers from GORD, IBS and Diverticulitis. I feel uncomfortable quite a lot of the time; I also suffer from Diabetes and my immune system is often in overdrive. The article made me wonder whether introducing probiotics, avoiding intolerances, etc would have a dramatic effect on me.

icanhandthemback - the whole research around the "gut brain" is fascinating and there is so much we do not understand.

Ican it has made a huge difference to me. I got to a point when I could hardly function and was refusing all social invitations as work was all I could manage. I was taken to A& E once by the first aider at work who was worried I was having a heart attack..it was digestive as I knew but she was so worried I yielded!
I am careful about yeast( inc alcohol) & gluten intake but do not ban it . I have energy now that I did not have in my 50s! If only my bloody back was ok!!

icanhandthemback Check out something called SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth). It's at the root of many gut problems and nowadays thought to be the cause of IBS. I have just finished treating mine and feel much better!

PECS Why do you think we need gluten? Just asking....

sparkle Grains , many of which contain gluten, are good for us and have health benefits. To cut them out unnecessarily may create deficiencies and health problems. Obviously those with celiac disease cannot tolerate it. But I know people who cannot tolerate strawberries but would not advocate we all avoided them!
I am wary of all fads regarding avoiding foods unless backed by proper research!

PECS I have studied nutrition for 30 years, and the reason I asked is that you said we needed gluten in particular, not grains in general. There are plenty of grains without gluten, but yes, grains in moderation are good in a balanced diet. However, the gluten content in wheat has changed in the last 120 years due to farming methods, and our bodies have not kept pace as that time-frame is nothing biologically, hence many people find it hard to tolerate wheat nowadays.

Was anyone saying that we shall all give up gluten? I don't think so.

Sparkle I think a lot of people cut out all items with gluten unnecessarily. I manage my gluten intake and it has helped me considerably. I changed my diet with the advice and guidance of a hospital nutritionist so not saying anything I was not advised by someone who also knew what they were talking about.

My granny managed by going shopping every day always wearing a hat and gloves! My Mum couldn’t stand her (mutual as she didn’t want her children to marry).

You could cook the bacon and freeze it I suppose. My OH would happily carry on eating any of it but I would be wary.
