Fridge door left open

Went out to DD's today - left about 12, returned about 8 pm. Fridge door was not properly closed when I got back.

Bacon (in sealed packet) was not cold; lots of yoghurts felt only a bit cold. Rest of things I am not bothered about: hard cheese, eggs, veg etc.

Would you eat the yogs and bacon?

I would say to be on the safe side do not give to OH. If bacon at room temp for more than a couple of hours it may start to grow bacteria. For a fit and well person I would say cook and eat without keeping any longer if it looks, smells ok. For yoghurt, I wouldn't take the risk with him.

Yes

henetha Sun 20-Jan-19 10:33:13

Yes, - but quickly.

DotMH1901 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:33:58

Yes, why not cook the bacon and then you can freeze it until you need it? The yogurts should be fine, the shelves at the supermarket are not as cold as a home fridge I find and they seem to manage okay!

Annaram1 Sun 20-Jan-19 10:54:28

Yes. I get through a lot of yogurts including ones past their sell by dates and I am fine.
As for the bacon it is likely full of preservatives anyway, You will live. Your hubby can have cereal.

David1968 Sun 20-Jan-19 11:11:25

Yes, definitely!

Patticake123 Sun 20-Jan-19 11:37:55

Depends entirely on where you live. If it’s the U.K. or Europe I’d say definitely yes. If it’s Australia or NZ or somewhere else that is basking in glorious sunshine, then it would be a no.

4allweknow Sun 20-Jan-19 11:41:24

Definitely would eat them. The fridge will have kept trying to maintain the set temperature, maybe not as effectively if the door had been closed. I would even eat packet bacon a couple if days out of date if stored properly. Bacon is cured. Yoghurts rarely have if out of date.

Esmerelda Sun 20-Jan-19 11:56:27

Yes (except I wouldn't eat the bacon as I'm not a meat eater!)

grandMattie Sun 20-Jan-19 12:05:57

Only frige - Yes!!! If it was freezer, I might hesitate.

Nelliemoser Sun 20-Jan-19 12:07:39

Oh! the times that happened to me. I came down one Christmas morning to find my fridge open.

Dont panic if its over night but do be careful, Says me .

Craftycat Sun 20-Jan-19 12:44:25

Yes no problem at all.

moggie57 Sun 20-Jan-19 12:59:08

yes as they have a valid date and they are still eatable.

Lazigirl Sun 20-Jan-19 14:05:24

Date is invalid if not kept at recommended temperature.

Sheilasue Sun 20-Jan-19 14:24:11

Yes, but not together ?

Bijou Sun 20-Jan-19 15:40:37

I take no notice of use by dates. Much food is wasted because of these dates. Bacon is a way of preserving pork. Yogurts are made by keeping the milk at a low temperature for hours sometimes adding bacteria which are useless anyway.
Eggs should not be refrigerated nor should tomatoes.

I also have to be really careful with this sort of thing because of DH's suppressed immune system. I would eat the stuff myself but not give it to him. Never refreeze thawed meat unless you cook it first. It's really not worth the risk. I remember my father being very ill in the days before use by dates. He had no sense of smell and couldn't tell things had gone off.

rafichagran Sun 20-Jan-19 16:17:45

Partner who comes from another culture would. I definatly would not.

Partner complains about my fussiness and obsession with sell by dates.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Sun 20-Jan-19 16:26:59

I'd inspect it carefully and would probably risk it after kicking myself.

Tillybelle Sun 20-Jan-19 17:46:44

yup

poshpink Sun 20-Jan-19 18:48:00

Yes

Luckygirl Sun 20-Jan-19 19:49:42

The other factor is that I am on Lansoprazole because of my gastritis, so my ability to fight off bugs with stomach acid lacks something! I can't be ill - not allowed - no-one to look after OH!

glammagran Sun 20-Jan-19 20:03:19

I’m afraid I often refreeze meat if I’ve forgotten to portion it before initial freezing. I’ve often eaten bacon days after use by dates. Also apple juice cartons opened for a good couple weeks. “Eat within 3 days of opening” is advice I generally ignore. Never been ill from anything I’ve prepared/eaten at home.

GabriellaG54 Sun 20-Jan-19 20:31:45

Lazigirl
If bacon is in an unopened vacuum sealed packet, it's highly unlikely to grow bacteria in the space of 8 hours, especially as the fridge door was not wide open and the motor would have worked overtime to keep the body of the fridge cold.

Lazigirl Sun 20-Jan-19 20:35:47

You are probably correct Gabrielle but if my OH was immuno compromised I would be loathe to risk it.
