An early sighting!

Just to go a little off-piste ---remember the adverts for 'Shake'n'Vac'? Some daffy blonde chucking the stuff all over the carpet and then doing a silly dance round and round the lounge whilst partnering the Hoover and singing a even sillier song at the same time?

In no way (in my experience) could any carpet cleaning product make housework delightful and attractive!

Ditto over-priced perfumes.

I remember the one with Nicole Kidman saying she loved to dance. Cringggge. No idea what the scent was!

The advert driving me crazy and that I find cringeworthy at the moment is the 'juicy' shampoo ad. 'Isn't that juicy?' I shout at the tv 'NO, IT'S NOT'.

My ex BIL used to invent advert slogans. One was the Fine Fare talking purse if anyone remembers that advert from the 70s. He was definitely cringe-worthy and a real eally

My go-to is Armani Code.
I've dabbled with other fragrances since my late teens, Freesia (in push-up stick form) Tweed, Coty L'Aimant, Youth Dew (very heavy) Tabu (bus driver asked what it was as he wanted to buy for his wife)
More recent purchases have been Obsession (CK) Anais Anais, Chance, Miss Dior, Burberry Woman and Narcisco Rodriguez.
It depends on the occasion and daytime or evening.
I usually use Palmolive original soap in the shower and some L'Occitane Pivoine Floral hand cream as my daily routine.
It's often remarked that I always smell 'clean' or 'freshly laundered' which (I think) is a nice description.

I'm going to mildly object to the 'stable boy/lad comments.
Two close relatives are involved in racing, starting as stable staff which all are obliged to do regardless of their ultimate goal.
To my certain knowledge, they were neither were rough nor dirty. Quite the opposite.

How do you advertise a smell? Quite difficult for the ad agencies I think.

Why pick on perfume ads? Most advertisements are stupid

There are occasional ones which are eye-catching/informative/amusing, but most of them aren't worth spending time on. I don't watch much tv, but tend to record what I want to see, so that I can 'fast-forward' through the rubbish.

Has anyone actually ever bought anything after seeing it advertised on the 'telly?'

Lol Miss A that's very funny! I've never understood perfume ads either - maybe we're not supposed to. I do love Sia's Chandelier song though which is used for the pier jumping ad but even the video for that makes no sense!

Worn Miss Dior for decades before these silly advertisements appeared. Just went to the perfumery department and had a try to see what I liked.

Some people must be taken in by these ads. When advertising first came on TV my mother used to buy products advertised. “Must be good it is on the television.”
The ads must pay otherwise why advertise. Although I believe I heard it is a way of paying less tax.
My grandson benefits because he is a graphic designer and works on some of the ads.

Oh yes - Poison! That was first marketed when used to go out for a meal with a friend every week, and walking up to her door I thought the local authorities had been spraying the weeds, the pungent aroma was so unpleasant. It was some time before I realised that she has sprayed herself with this expensive and absolutely horrible scent, and had to sit in a restaurant with her smelling like something I would use on greenfly, or clearing the drains. Did it smell better on anyone, I wonder, as evidently scent changes with different skins.

Re Poison... some years ago I stopped a woman in the street to ask her what perfume she was wearing. It was glorious, rich, seductive... totally lush and indulgent. It was Poison.
I rushed off to try it and left it on my skin for the requisite 15 mins or so but by then I'd forgotten about the fragrance as was certain I'd "trodden in something". It was a smell I couldn't shake until I realised what it was and had a thorough wash!
So no, it obviously doesn't suit everyone!

I was given a bottle of Poisson back in the 80's and loved it! A friend told me that they had been trying to describe me to someone and that person said 'Oh, you mean the blonde lady who always smells so lovely!' So hopefully I was one that it suited! I used to like Tabac too and often wore it, even though it was a man's fragrance.

Anyone got any unwashed stable boys to spare ...? With shirts off and plenty of muscles .....

Loved the John Paul Gautier ad set in a bathroom with a dozen women looking through a 2-way mirror at ripped guy on the other side, every time he moved the women sighed and giggled until he slid his hands into the top of his pants, then all the women swooned and fell to the floor in a faint.

The other cringy one is Keira Knightly pouting away on a motorbike with her backside sticking out like an overgrown pumpkin!
Also that one with some actress climbing a silk rope and crooning J'Adore in a silly voice.
All so embarrassing.
I don't wear any perfume any more since my favourite was discontinued about fifteen years ago. They all smell sickly and synthetic.
