Hello all, sending good wishes.

Well, the other evening I noticed what was (for me, at least) the first spotting of the Ridiculous Perfume Adverts that seem to appear at this time of year. confused

Now, I'm sure that some of these scents are perfectly lovely, unlike my first experience of Dior Poison when it was newly launched, which led to a friend and I driving back from Windsor with our arms out of the car hmm

Why can't they just show a picture of the bottle, and say "this is jolly nice, it smells like roses/new mown grass/lillies/leather/unwashed stable boys etc?

But no! The impression that they give is that the perfume is so delicious, that you might want to throw yourself off a pier in full evening dress, whilst your erstwhile beloved drives his car around the beach writing messages for you.

I was trying to think back to some of the ones from last Christmas, but can only vaguely remember black clad women slinking around dark alleys, and some silly tart venturing into the sea wearing a lot of jewellery grin

I don't do perfume, many of them make my nose stream like a tap.

PECS, strange you should say that.
I was wearing Obsession, and a man at the bus stop said to me, practically drooling "Mmm.. darling, I can smell you from here.."
I never wore it again. I gave it to my friend. blush

I wear Liz Earl perfumes everyday and on special occasions! I used to wear Obsession... but the postie who delivered to work recognised the scent and said it made him feel very randy hmm..that rather put me off it particularly as he was not my type wink!

And how about Rive Gauche which used to be practically a mandatory purchase at the Duty Free? What a stink!

I always mentally switch off (or fast forward if recorded) when the adverts are on so have no idea what you are all talking about. I go into Boots (other stores are available ) and have a sniff at the reduced samples. If I find one I like on offer I will buy it. Several times in the past people have said, 'That's nice. What is it?' I usually have no idea!

My 11 year old DGD and I whiled away an hour in the airport this year by seeking out the most expensive perfumes and sampling them. I think £110 was the record. I have to say neither of us was much impressed by the smell of most of them.

Men write these.

OH bought me Poison for a birthday way back when. Wondered if it was a message, especially when it smelt so awful I had to scrub it off! Gave it to my friend and it smelt wonderful on her - I had no idea perfumes could change so much from person to person. Glad it wasn't just me.

Conni7 Mon 29-Oct-18 16:13:56

Me too, Craftycat! Never seen all these ads. Are we missing a laugh?

Deedaa Mon 29-Oct-18 16:06:11

Have you noticed that ads for companies like Dolce and Gabbana always feature one of those oiled, muscle bound men who could only appeal to gay men? Why do they think it would encourage women to use their perfume?

oldbatty Mon 29-Oct-18 16:05:55

self flagellation now

MysticalUnicorn Mon 29-Oct-18 15:50:13

old batty, Naughty me! I shall slap my own wrists. wink

Willow10 Mon 29-Oct-18 15:01:26

Oops! grin

Craftycat Mon 29-Oct-18 14:56:34

Don't watch ads! Just record everything on commercial channels & then watch what you want ,when you want & whiz through the ads- been doing it for years.
You also gain a lot of time,

Bobdoesit Mon 29-Oct-18 14:47:01

I was in need of a laugh today and phoenix just provided it!
Thank you for that I feel so much better.

oldbatty Mon 29-Oct-18 14:35:45

Mystical Unicorn, begone with your lewd and anti hard working horsey people type insult.

David1968 Mon 29-Oct-18 14:35:39

Oh Miss A, this is great fun! Thank you!

Omaju Mon 29-Oct-18 14:27:55

I used to wear Poison and it smelt deep and luscious on me but it smelt awful on my poor friend. I used to wear a perfume called Geminnesse, again it was deep and sultry until I after I had my first child and my body chemistry must have changed because it smelt like cat's pee, I was very upset. Poison still smells lovely on me but I have been wearing Lush's Karma for about 20+ years now.
The adverts are quite daft and sometimes confusing but the ad makers are trying to sell a lifestyle product - it's the same with most ads, I hate the vacuum cleaner adverts , especially the ones where the houses are all huge and airy and white.... and they have a huge pile of debris on the floor.

Hm999 Mon 29-Oct-18 14:23:32

Oh dear, I link such irritating adverts with old Disney films like Cinderella.

GreenGran78 Mon 29-Oct-18 14:22:44

Willow10 I love your typo. Poisson is French for fish! smile

HannahLoisLuke Mon 29-Oct-18 14:17:17

Yes, Natalie Portman behaving like a demented idiot. Who wants that kind of love? Nobody in their right mind I'll bet.
The other cringy one is Keira Knightly pouting away on a motorbike with her backside sticking out like an overgrown pumpkin!
Also that one with some actress climbing a silk rope and crooning J'Adore in a silly voice.
All so embarrassing.
I don't wear any perfume any more since my favourite was discontinued about fifteen years ago. They all smell sickly and synthetic.

granto3 Mon 29-Oct-18 13:23:53

oldbatty,,,,,,,,,,,, personally, an unwashed stable "man" would be my choice. Stable boys
I imagine, would still have a bit of growing up to do smile

Loved the John Paul Gautier ad set in a bathroom with a dozen women looking through a 2-way mirror at ripped guy on the other side, every time he moved the women sighed and giggled until he slid his hands into the top of his pants, then all the women swooned and fell to the floor in a faint.
