As a person with no life ,according to Paddyann, I looked at the wedding after oldbatty spoke of it, I looked at quite a few videos of JRM too, and a Johnnie Mathis concert , I will never meet them . I posted on this forum, will never know anyone here, how sad am I ?

The Royal family, and in particular the Queen, has been the one constant thing in my life since I was born. Family members have been born and died, politicians and political parties have been and gone, and world events have shocked or gladdened my heart.

But through it all she, and the office she holds, is the one "thing" that has remained unchanged and has never let me, or the country, down. That constant presence in my personal history is important for me.

I think paddyann would see my life as very sad and mundane, I hope she is happy with hers.

Johnnie Mathis is my one weakness batty, well perhaps not the only one ? . I loved his ‘12th of Never’ , bit disappointed when he ‘came out’ not because he was gay, just he would have sung that song for a chap not for me ?

If a royal event is televised I watch it. The most recent royal wedding was 'show business', enjoyable, but preferred Kate and Williams in the abbey with all the 'pomp and circumstance' that goes with it. However I do have a life and who am I, unless asked, to tell another or how another should live theirs.

wildswan you are right whether we like it or not the Royal family probably is the one constant thing over our lifetime, family, friends, Prime Ministers, Governments, houses, shops come and go but the RF plod on. The two weddings were so different, same cast but seven years make a lot of difference. How interesting it would be to know what HM was thinking. If I remember rightly Harry had been up more or less all night before William's wedding. One thing is certain we know a bit more about them than they do about us.

That isn't very nice Paddyann. I wouldn't want to admit to some of the rubbish I watch on YouTube. I'm not a royalist but it is part of our history and people don't have to explain or apologise for what they watch or listen to.
I am sure Gransnet used to be a bit friendly than it sometimes is now.

Anniebach I saw Johnny Matthis in London. Can't remember where or exactly when but somewhere in the West End. He was very good although the production was a bit chaotic.

I think we maybe flick through YouTube the way we used to flick through magazines - to relax, pass the time, distract ourselves, discover some little gem. Why not? It is free and tidy - no magazines kicking around. Harmless and enjoyable. To those who say the royals don’t care - perhaps they cannot know us as individuals (not many of us) but I do think that mostly the royals are very aware of us and their responsibilities. Obviously that is a generalisation; it would be easy to find examples to contradict that, but on the whole they recognise their obligations. If they did not then we would have a president. Perhaps a whole new thread would be “who would prefer a president?”

Well I'm not a fan of the RF either, but after watching Countryfile the other evening I have to say I have a different view of some aspects of their lives, in particular the contribution they have made to preserving Windsor Great Park and the innovations in farming methods on their farms. The care of their herds was an eye opener for me too.

Personally I like the royals and hate the idea of a president, but each to their own. You never appreciate what you have till it’s gone.

I know I risk being shut up in the Tower of London for this but......although Harry looked fine I thought Wills looked a bit on the plump side - certainly more so than in HIS own wedding photos.

Suppose ‘better bargain’ depends if a wife wants to dominate , William and Kate seem to work as a couple, I think Harry will trot along behind Megan, rather like a well trained pet.

I'm a fervent royalist, always have been. I think they add stability and I just love the traditions. But I feel no need to make catty remarks to those who don't agree.

We got a tv in 1957 when I was 15. It was the first time I had seen or heard Johnny Mathis and I was very taken with his voice and looks. My father walked into the room and snapped the TV off. JM became my secret love as I lay in bed next to my little sister with my head hanging down to hear my transistor radio playing quietly under the bed and waited for his songs to be played.
Father wasn’t a bad man but his racism baffled me and I never dared ask him why.
I don’t think he would have approved of last week’s royal wedding any more than the Queen seemed to. I on the other hand enjoyed it very much. A fun wedding for a change.

I'm not a royalist but watched the weddings. The way pomp and ceremony is done in this country is really impressive. DH and son went to Queens birthday parade (?)years ago and we often have Cenotaph ceremony and whatever else is going on on the tv. Not always to sit n watch every minute but so well done and deserving of respect.
And Johnny Mathis... went to a concert 40 years ago in Dublin with a few girlfriends. I don't think DH knows!!
Youtube is great. We often watch music videos, classical and contemporary.
Check out Sia, Christine and the Queens (Paradise.. and Tilted esp), Alan Walker, lots out there. Very enjoyable and culturally broadening

Enough time for fun at a wedding after the wedding ceremony, it’s what wedding receptions are for. If people want a fun wedding they can have the three day beach wedding like Megan’s first wedding.

I heard the Righteous Brothers singing Unchained Melody on the radio the other day. Although they were in 'my era' , I'd forgotten how good they sound. I thought I' d try You Tube to hear more.
