As an English expatriate having lived in Melbourne for 47 years, I was thrilled to hear we have a new Prince, as yet un-named. grin

Sixth in line, eh! The queue's getting longer by the day and will (soon?) be even longer when Harry and Merkel start doing their stuff. wink
Poor Harry; bumped out of 6th. spot. sad
Just wonder how long the new one will have to wait before ascending the throne?

Realising I'm not immortal (after all), I'll have to miss that one. smile
As a loyal subject, I bow my knee and wish them all well. grin
So long as they promise to displace TV coverage of the forthcoming Aussie Rules football season. Awful!. grin

Incidentally, were any Gransnetters present in the welcoming crowd outside the hospital when the new Prince emerged?
I'd love to read postings about their experiences; how they felt, etc.

The media down here are going to "go bananas" for months , if not years. Talk about TV coverage, waiting breathlessly for his first smile, first burp, first this and that! smile
Waiting for the next bulletin.!
Good Health

how wonderful the new Mum looked just hours after giving birth

No wonder Nanny41 considering her “personal stylist” was one of the first people to visit after the birth.

Situpstraight Wed 25-Apr-18 07:32:14

* gillybob* I think, going from memory of myself and DD it would have taken more than 7 hours and a stylist to get me out in public after giving birth and looking so good.
I’m not for or against the Royal Family per se, but credit where credit is due.
Good genes and lifestyle helps of course, I had a house to run and a toddler to look after too.

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 07:38:15

I gave birth to my son and walked out of hospital in my jeans situpstraight ( I didn’t wear maternity clothes) . I was 18 and looked about 14 . No make up either .

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 07:38:57

Not beautiful mind you, that would be stretching it toooooo far grin

Situpstraight Wed 25-Apr-18 07:44:33

Sounds as though you looked wonderful without a stylist then.

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 08:04:01

hmm not quite situpstraight

The word “wonderful” and me just don’t go together .

Thanks Elegran for the info about monarch's funding. So what's Duchy of Cornwall about then?

Elegran Wed 25-Apr-18 08:49:26

It was created in 1337 from his personal property by Edward III for his son and heir, Prince Edward, to make him independent and give him a private estate to manage and get an income from (it could also have been to give him something to keep him busy and stop him from plotting to hasten his father on his way and get his own hands on the throne and the family fortune grin) .

It gave the heir an independent sphere of influence and some experience of management before he took on the government of the country (which in Ed III's time was hands-on).

A charter ruled that each future Duke of Cornwall would be the eldest surviving son of the Monarch and the heir to the throne. When/if Prince Charles becomes king, the Duchy will be passed on to William, and subsequently to George.
It has a website duchyofcornwall.org/ (and some nice biscuits)

gillybob I was the same age as Kate and my 'mummy tummy' has never disappeared!
I don't remember using makeup though but then there was no-one waiting outside to take my photograph.
The paparazzi must have been waiting at the other entrance and I sneaked out the back way.

Iam64 Wed 25-Apr-18 08:50:35

Thanks Elegran

Grandma70s Wed 25-Apr-18 08:58:34

I remember my first action after having my second child and saying hello to him was putting on lipstick. I had an epidural, so it was an easy experience, unlike my first.

Jalima1108 Wed 25-Apr-18 09:09:58

I'd still like to read about your impressions, though, of your first glimpse!
As Del Boy said so memorably:
"It's a little baby!"

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 09:15:08

I’ve got what’s fashionably called “late onset mummy tummy “ Jalima.
grin

In France, and I would imagine other republics , ex presidents keep a certain security presence for life. Times that by their number and the British royals security needs don't seem as bad.
I don't personally know what I make of Meghan, but I have always had a soft spot for Harry and he seems happier than I have ever seen him, so I will go with that for now

Eloethan Wed 25-Apr-18 09:36:54

I have no interest whatsoever in the royal family and, as I've said before, think the monarchy is an outdated concept that reinforces inequality.

I also have no opinions with regard to Harry and Meghan but I do think some of the comments about her are nasty and reflect the sort of snobbishness and prejudice that exceptionalism engenders.

Given that hours of TV air time and newspapers columns are devoted to the royal family - all carefully vetted by the royal PR machine - I think for someone to suggest that the lives and goings-on of that family are nobody's business is rather ironic.

Anniebach Wed 25-Apr-18 10:20:02

I can't agree the royals reinforce inequality . They are wealthy, they have privileges.

There has always been inequality always will be. Unless we all earn the same wages regardless of occupation, everyone lives in 3 up 3 down houses, everyone drives the same make of car. Everyone goes to university and leaves with a degree regardless of I.Q. Or no one goes to university, all leave school age 16.

Magrithea Wed 25-Apr-18 11:24:36

The latest prince won't ascend the throne rufus2 unless his Dad and big brother and sister all die before him!! This is how Queen Victoria came to the throne, she was something like 17th in line but all those ahead of her died! Hopefully this won't happen tho.

I don't suppose Harry is unhappy he's been bumped down a place

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 11:38:48

I'm afraid I will have to disagree with you there Annie

Yes they are extremely wealthy but their wealth is unearned. They enjoy privileges beyond comprehension.

How do you think it must feel to be living on the breadline and have their obscene wealth drip fed by the media on a daily basis?

Imagine a young mother relying on hand-me-downs and handouts being bombarded with the royal baby sh*t that we have on a daily basis?

The royals are all huge hypocrites (and that includes her maj) who tell us all how to run our lives and save the bloomin' planet while they jet around the world and drive (or are driven) around in huge gas guzzlers. While they eat the best of food, wear the most expensive of designer clothes, enjoy the best medical treatment money can buy........the list is endless.

merlotgran Wed 25-Apr-18 12:00:02

Going off topic slightly. I wonder what's happened to that lovely black cocker spaniel they made so much of when George was born?

My guess he's a 'holiday pet' and is up in Anmer being looked after by the staff.

merlotgran Wed 25-Apr-18 12:06:46

Or maybe back with the Middletons who bred him and gave him to Kate and William.

I must be bored this morning. grin

Jalima1108 Wed 25-Apr-18 12:09:10

Woof! grin

polyester57 Wed 25-Apr-18 12:11:01

If Kate were to appear before all, disshevelled, like she´d been dragged through a hedge backwards, like most of us feel hours after giving birth, she´d be dragged through the mud by the tabloids. When she gives what is expected of her, she is slagged off for being too polished. Give the poor woman a break! She can´t win.

Jalima1108 Wed 25-Apr-18 12:13:02

I hope she is as dishevelled as she wants to be today - getting to know her new baby like any other mother.

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 12:19:14

She is many things polyester but a "poor woman" she aint !

A "poor woman" would have probably given birth in an overcrowded/underfunded nhs maternity unit (our own is threatened with closure and is currently only carrying out "straight forward births"- how they know a birth is going to be straight forward is beyond me, but I digress.) No 20 strong medical team on hand for Ms average. A "poor woman" wouldn't be going home to be waited on hand and foot by a team of servants, chefs, nannies etc. A "poor woman" might be worrying about when she has to return to work and who will look after baby and how much it will cost and many, many other things, none of which represents the royals even with the biggest stretch of the imagination.

gillybob Wed 25-Apr-18 12:21:55

I think maybe she's slobbing around in old jammies with regurgitated milk stains on her shoulder, having had a sleepless night with a howling baby together with the other 2 waking up every few minutes. Oh and sod the personal stylist. hmm
