Have you checked the long term weather forecast?

Just been out to stock up at Sainsburys, the car park was so full, it was as if it was a pre Christmas Saturday, so looks like we all had the same idea.
Am hoping no snow as have several nice things to do next week.

I always wondered about Liberty bodices when I was a child. The treatment I had during the war was with goose grease and Thermogene.
I remember the horror I felt when the bottle of grease was placed on the hearth to warm. My parents had been worried as I had always been prone to lung problems in childhood. ( My younger brother never had the treatment).
The fire was built up and I was stripped to my knickers. Both parents took it in turn to rub me hard with goose grease intil the skin was bright pink and I was shouting for them to stop.
The Thermogene wadding ( bright red) was already being warmed by the fire. the scissors were at the ready. A large strip was then cut to fit around the chest and my mother immediately sewed this into place where it would stay until the cold weather had passed.
I just remember the pains of application rather than the wearing or removal of it
Did any other gran get the Thermogene treatment?

Bad weather for two weeks I remember 1963 that went on for 3 months no long range weather forecast then.
No central heating, only one fire in the living room, toilet outside kitchen door.

Oh, I remember liberty bodices and I also remember standing by the airing cupboard - toe to toe with my (darling) mum, arguing about wearing the damn things. I think I won!
When it's really cold I always wear a long vest so it can be tucked into my trousers - that always seems to keep me nice and warm.

Urmstongran, When I want to sound really posh I refer to the grounds rather than the garden the maintenance of which costs us all our money.

We have snow forecasted for Monday as we are in the East so the Beast is imminent.

I don't know about stocking up with food but I've just got back from our local market with a boot full of plants, seed potatoes and wild bird food. DH is checking the supplies of home-made wine in the garage.

I just wish the forecasters would find some common ground. For our area the BBC is forecasting light showers for Monday - the Met Office is forecasting significant accumulations. It’s the same bloomin’ weather, for goodness sake!

Feeling a bit smug because we live in the west. On holiday a couple of years ago we met a couple who were very rude about where we live and said they wouldn't move north of London because of the awful weather. I wouldn't mind too much if they got snowed in!

Presumably the country will come to a halt if it snows in London? I remember in 1963 walking about 5 miles to work in the snow and thinking nothing of it, did the same in about 1967 when I worked in a city. Not sure anyone does that anymore.

If we do get snow we live in a road near a school so it is always cleared. Lovely neighbour will come and make sure we are OK as they go out with their sledge and brave the steep hills to the shops.

Well, we have plenty food in but short on fuel, so I dragged myself and my cough out on to the hill behind and collected a weeks supply of firewood. A passing neighbour pitched in to help break and stack it at the back door, while DH managed to saw the bigger bits into logs.

Funnily enough, I'm feeling better for my hour or so out in the sunshine, having been confined to the house for over a week.

I vaguely remember Thermogene! I also had to wear a liberty bodice and something called a 'Zooda' jacket - no idea how to spell it! I was always ill as a child...
Of course I now realise why Sainsburys was so busy this morning - everyone stocking up. Going to be very cold by Tuesday. Just brought in two pots of geraniums that have managed so far all winter outside, but near back door. Can't let them die now!!

SheilaSue in 1963 (in Yorkshire) we were snowed in, 2 weeks off school & snowdrift at the bend in the road just above our house had to be cleared by a digger even the snowblower couldn't clear it. Rayburn in kitchen & open fire in lounge, ice on the inside of the bedroom windows, such fun. Even us 7/8 year olds were glad to get back to school.

I live on the edge of Dartmoor, no snow yet this year, quite sheltered where I live but snow forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday. Thermals at the ready, haven't needed them yet this year although it's been quite cold. Shop within walking distance, milk delivery man carries allsorts so I won't go short & if roads are ok not far into Town. Mostly at home this week so I'm not too bothered, me & cat will snuggle up & turn up the heating

I remember going down to Wales in that 63/64 winter and there was still snow banked up at the sides of the roads in April.
Also remember the inappropriately named liberty bodices - freedom was the last thing they offered.

What is all the fuss about....its cold weather and snow!

I am amused by the Beast From the East. What's next - the Pest From the West?

I’m right on the east coast-practically in the North Sea - so will be first to welcome the Beast! Have a Sainsbury’s delivery booked for tomorrow so can batten down the hatches if needs be.

I can't believe we have booked a lodge holiday in South Devon next week with our daughter's dog!
We live in South West Devon, Willow - it's bitterly cold here at the moment, but I will be surprised if we get any more than a few flurries of snow. I hope I'm not proved wrong!
Oh and we have booked a week in North Cornwall next week, also with our daughter's dog - and our daughter and granddaughter. We're hoping we don't get snowed in down there, or for that matter, that snow doesn't prevent our journey there. When 'winter showers' are forecast for the South West, it's usually worse in Cornwall .

It was a beautiful day in SWWales yesterday. I was working outside and had to take my coat off, it was so warm in the sun. But it is not going to last. I hope all you GNers in the path of ' The Beast' don't get snowed in and manage alright. Let's hope it is not as bad as predicted and doesn't last long

It seems to be 'the thing' now for forecasters to dramatise the weather...do they do it to take our minds off other issues!!... We've probably,all of us lived through snow,cold,ice,wind lots of times..but the media just seem to want to incite panic!....

I well remember 1963, I was working as a nurse and getting up at silly o'clock, traipsing through the snow to get a bus to work. Never missed a shift and was never late, nowadays a few flakes of snow and the country grinds to a halt.
I think liberty bodices were a very good idea, the walk to school in the winter was a very cold one.

Well, I've started putting my nightie on the bathroom radiator an hour before bedtime. Don't want cold kidneys in the night...

My OH watched the forecast then demanded I get on the iPad and get us out of here. I was instructed not to move from the sofa until that was accomplished.
So next week I'll be cruising on the Nile like Cleopatra and the week after snorkelling amongst the tropical reefs on the Red Sea.
Costs less than a fortnight in Bridlington!

... and the meters have just been read, so can crank the heating up now and not worry about the bills. For a while anyway.

We were hoping to escape the icy blasts by leaving for Sri Lanka on Wednesday, but "the best laid plans", have resulted in my breaking my ankle yesterday. So now I'm hopping mad! Liberty bodices: remember them all too well, especially those inexplicable rubbery bits. Can't see my granddaughter agreeing to wear one.
