It seems that the British Isles is heading into some very nasty weather. As of Sunday 25th February. Siberian winds will cross Europe and we could have a prolonged very cold spell for about 2 weeks.Snow is a very high possibility but it could be localised. Although a way off best to check and be prepared. Stock up on food and fuel and check your local weather for the next few days.

As a veteran of the 1963 freeze, I'm quite amused at the panic generated by the prospect of a couple of weeks below zero. I had to go by train into Edinburgh every day - Dip Ed classes - and remember the enormous icicles, the size of organ pipes, along the rail track. Between the training college and the University we had to walk up a steep and very icy slope which luckily had a handrail. I had a red duffel coat with a fleecy lining which stood me in very good stead. I don't remember the country grinding to a halt. Snow ploughs created great walls of snow along the roads.

Blimey! that goose grease and wadding sounds awful. I bet your clothes had to be a size larger to cover it all. shock

In the 1950's when it snowed we still had to walk to school - no days off then. All the wet coats hanging in the lobbies where the huge black hooks stuck out on both sides. We were tougher then

In 1947 (I was 9) we walked to school, running on the top of piles of snow shovelled to the side of the road. No central heating, only one small fire in the house, and coal was rationed. Frost flowers on the inside of windows, and toothbrushes froze. The big boys across the road made an igloo from the frozen snow - we survived!

I'm a little short of groceries for a week but I thought if I've got rice and a few potatoes, and flour, eggs & milk (pancakes maybe) I'll be OK. Although Sainsburys is just across the road, to get there is a major struggle for me. I'll just make do. Can't see myself using mobility scooter in the next few minutes even though the sun is brilliant. Lazy of what!

My mum put thermogene on my chest at night when I had a cough, but I didn't have to live in it!

Perhaps booking a few days in the Lake District wasn't my best idea!❄️

It's been a beautiful sunny day here in the West Midlands but it's now getting very cold. DH has just gone to light the woodburner. I went out to inspect the garden a couple of hours ago. There is lots going on out there so I hope a cold spell doesn't have too much of an adverse effect. Thursday is the first day of Spring.

Erring on side of caution and stocked up in food also took tins over daughters, she does have a shop delivery tomorrow, so the should be fine.
My biggest worry is her partner has to drive back to work in London on Tuesday evening and is then away for 9 days. So DD on her own with 2 little ones
I'm sure will all be OK, what will be -will be.

What's making me anxious is the waiting.
Today feels like the lull before the storm
A beautiful cold sunny day,
We have had great time at a local nature reserve with DD, her partner and DGSs.
But now back to checking the weather reports.

MrsEggy, I remember that year. We lived in the country and only three of us turned up at school. Head teacher lived in cottage next door. All the bottles of milk frozen and left by coal fire with fire guard to defrost.

In 1963 my OH was riding his Lambretta when he hit black ice and skidded. He came off and wrenched muscles in his chest but somehow managed to get back on and ride it the rest of the way to the university to sit his exam.

Afterwards he went to a doctor who gave him a medical certificate he could use if he failed. Fortunately he passed so it was never needed but the chest muscles never completely recovered.

I don't know why I was not riding pillion that day, because he usually gave me a lift, but we will never know whether or not the accident would have happened if he'd had the extra balast on the back of his scooter.

I am not sure how old some of us are on here and in what state of health, or indeed how financially we stand - neither do I want to know, but I think it would be sensible to listen to advise given out by the medical world which is

Stay in if at all possible
Keep your house at a minimum of 21c
If you go out wear layers with the top layer being entirely windproof
Do not get wet
If you in the at risk category the above advise is almost mandatory

We have a duty to keep as well as possible and not to clog up the poor old NHS

We had lovely sunshine this morning and then snow flurries, but there is a lot of ominous Beastly looking cloud
a-bubblin’ up on the eastern horizon.

cornergran Mon 26-Feb-18 10:15:28

Bright and sunny here, car says -1. Our ‘bad’ forecast is mostly for later in the week. Guess when I’ve got a long awaited hospital appointment an hours drive away with no easy public transport access? Apparently if I don’t go I’m back to the bottom of the list. Grrr. Oh well, wait and see time, there are worse things. Stay safe. .

Oldwoman70 Mon 26-Feb-18 10:16:54

Last week I made casseroles and stews which have been frozen into individual portions, oil delivery early this morning, log fire made up. I live in the south west and doubt we will see much snow - but I hate the cold so intend staying home and keeping warm!

DanniRae Mon 26-Feb-18 11:01:17

Ha Ha whitewave - that picture really made me smile, ta!! smile

Bellanonna Mon 26-Feb-18 11:06:33

That’s really funny

glammanana Mon 26-Feb-18 12:21:08

We are usually very lucky with regards to snowfall and tend to get away with it as we are sheltered by the Welsh Hills but a real difference in temp today so thick lined boots are the order of the week if I go anywhere.

Jalima1108 Mon 26-Feb-18 12:46:49

Lovely sunshine this morning but it's clouding up a bit now (fluffy white clouds rather than snow clouds). However, after DH had been out this morning he came back in and complained about his hands being frozen; I asked 'where are your gloves?' 'in the drawer' he said
hmm

Bellanonna Mon 26-Feb-18 13:26:27

Just like my husband’s hearing aid, Jalima. But he’s not sure which drawer. Meanwhile I continue to say everything twice!
