Yes, I heard that too. I absolutely hate this very cold weather and I want to hibernate.

I remember wearing vests when I was a schoolgirl. Most were warmed by the oil lamp in the scullery. And yes, protect your kidneys.

Today I wear vests but don't seem to do the job properly. And there's always a ridge (hem) showing along my trousers backside. They're really too long.

Here in the north-west of England I think that we're forecast to miss most of the worst weather, through it is & will be cold. "Winter draw(er)s on!", as my mum would say.

They seem to be very accurate with the forecasts where we live so I am only expecting a small amount of snow at lunchtime on Thursday but I only have a 20% chance of that happening so I won’t hold my breath ?

They seem to be accurate, we are planing on coming to the UK in ten days, and were hoping to greet the SPRING, this doesnt look as though its going to happen, but on the bright side we are leaving the Arctic weather behind here in Sweden, and promise not to bring it with us! Wrap up everyone.

Hello Whitewave ....say hello to my sister ...also living in the sheltered 'south downs'.

The only snow we got here when the last blast was forecast, was a 5 second flutter which, if I'd blinked, I'd have missed.
Today it's a clear blue sky and sunshine all around. I parked my bike to sit by the canal earlier and watched several boats and their occupants come to life, chimneys expelling warm tendrils of smoke, cats stretching on the deck and stalking the ducks I was feeding.
We've had rain 3 days ago but pretty sheltered here in the South and warmer than most places.

Anybody remember the 'liberty bodice' that we wore as kids, or was this just in Wales? It was worn over the vest. Uncomfortable, but definitely kept us warm.

Warm, maybe, but so embarrassing if you were one of the few made to wear them. Horrible rubbery things.

Definitely embarrassing Bella, especially if you had to change for PE or games! Some had rubber buttons down the front and some you pulled over your head. Took me ages to persuade my mother that I didn't need to wear them anymore and I was so glad when I grew and they were too small to wear any more. The art was in persuading her that she didn't need to buy new ones!!

Don't panic , don't panic, but some are.

Beast from the east supposed to hit the east coast from today on & worsen over almost 2 weeks. Do hope it is wrong as if snow or rain freezes I cannot get out. Already had both hips replaced & do not fancy slipping, sliding & breaking the sutgeons good work so will stay in for the time it takes. Hope the Sainsburys delivery gets through or I will be out of the basics even though have bread & milk in the freezer. Only so much room in the silly small thing. Not to worry it cant last forever, can it?

You sound posh Merlotgran! 2 tons of gravel would just about bury my apartment. And a ‘drive’. How wonderful that sounds. We only ever had a garden path.... ?

We have very kindhearted neighbors who always remember to feed the birds but please don't forget that they need water too and with this cold spell make sure that you break the ice so that they have access for their drinking and bathing

IMO...weather watching in the extreme, is akin to being a tornado follower, a fanatical bird watcher or a train number noting anorak.
I look out of the window and wear clothes suitable for the weather I see outside. To stockpile huge amounts of food is...well, OTT, unless you live on Stornaway or similar. This is not the Urals.

Yes, I wore a liberty bodice over my vest, both the rubber button type and the pull over type. I remember the taped seams and brushed lining.
Mum always warmed our clothes on a rack near the fire whilst we had breakfast. Happy happy days.

In cold weather wear lots and lots of layers to trap the air. They don't all have to be thick layers. Works vaguely like a wet suit!

Well get ready for it, because it has already hit us here in Denmark, so the cold and snow will be with you soon.

I can't believe we have booked a lodge holiday in South Devon next week with our daughter's dog! We were thinking it might be a bit spring like by now! We will have to wrap up and hope for the best and that the lodge is warm.

I always wore a liberty bodice in winter youngagain No buttons though. My mother always wrapped a long scarf around our necks, under the armpits and tied in a very inconvenient knot at the back.
When I was teaching we had a little boy who always had a large square of flannel soaked in Vick or camphor, pinned to his vest. This from October to March. Made your eyes water

Oh yes, I can't forget those liberty bodices. There was a button to which suspenders were attached for the lisle stockings I had to wear after I'd had pneumonia. My mum was also fanatical about keeping my kidneys warm. It was a relief to outgrow those bodices. I have all my fleece tops and PJs in the wash today to be ready for that 'beast from the East'.

Why are you all so surprised - it is winter after all. There can't be many of us who haven't got sufficient food in the store cupboard to last us a few days. I doubt we will starve!
