Quality Street shock

Disaster! Dismay! I just googled Caley's Marching Chocolate to see if a supermarket chain stocked it and everywhere seems to be out of stock or no longer available! Looks like they've gone out of business! I admit I haven't eaten much chocolate lately due to excess weight.

That's it. We must all rally and eat good quality chocolates. Eat it or loose it!

Caley’s Marching Chocolate! What an intriguing name! Is it the chocolate equivalent of Kendal Mint Cake, Nfk?

Although Cadbury's R&R dept is still based in UK, the actual manufacture takes place in Poland. I can remember a time when we thought chocolates bought on the Continent were rubbish compared with Cadbury's. Anyone else remember that?

There is still a big factory at Bournville, are you sure they don't make any chocolate there?

Kisathecat, QS not being to your taste doesn't make them crap (your word). They have no more additives than other mainstream chocolates, and don't actually contain "cheap soy".

Should we start a Coffee cream admiration society? They were/ are my favourites, but hate orange and strawberry centres. Yuk.

Sorry, but have boycotted Nestle for years because of their terrible campaigns over bottled baby milk in third world country’s. But I hadn’t realised is that QS is made by them - I always get some for my father. What a quandary - wonder what else he would like? Two days left to find out!

I have never quite felt the same about Roses or Quality Street since they took away the coffee cremes. I am usually the only one who likes these, so I used to clean up.

Nowadays I'm all about Hotel Chocolat. They really have spoilt me for any other chocolates.

And on a similar subject - remember at Christmas time when you used to get chocolates in those beautiful boxes with picturesque scenes on them?

Fewer and fewer people understand the phrase "chocolate box cottage/village" these days.

Caleys Marching Chocolate is 70% Fairtrade chocolate, but creamier than Green and Blacks. At least it was.

Back to QS I found a green triangle last night. Still looking forward to my Hotel Chocolate sleekster - dark chocolate reduced sweetness, on Christmas Day. I have bought DS some artisan chocolate covered ginger at a food fair.

I am a coffee crème fan too.

Ours had the Triangles??! All our boxes did. We bulk bought in Asda they had a ton of tins that must have been squashed or crushed, so were selling them off at about £2 a tin, so my husband, who thought we were saving money, bought ten tins, threw them all in a huge bag and went round the neighbours and chucked chocolates at everyone, but not before picking out all the triangles for himself....ohh, you dont think he got to your chocolates too do you?? Would not surprise me!

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works but I've just read a 2012 article on the BBC about Caley's which says

The factory, now the site of Chapelfield shopping centre, was destroyed in 1942 by enemy bombing, but reopened in 1947 and became the property of Rowntree Mackintosh in the early 1970s. It was taken over by Nestle in 1988.

Sorry maggimaybe I realise that you really like them! No offence was intended it is just my opinion that they are crap now. I didn’t realise they were nestle that just makes them double crap for me.

I only like Thorntons since Cadbury was taken over, the sizes reduced, the sugar increased. Doesn't taste like chocolate anymore. Thanks for telling us about Nestle I'll try to avoid them now.
My beef for a while now is why don't any of the choc manufacturers make a coffee flavoured filling any more? I adore it but unless I pay for a premium brand I just can't find it. Not so keen on the brands that have ground coffee beans mixed in the chocolate. I'm thinking coffee truffle.
Anyone know of one?

Thornton’s used to make their chocolate in a small factory about a mile from where I lived. We youngsters used to think the people who worked there had the best job in the world because they could eat as many as they wanted while they were making them! Their chocolates were rather special then; I remember sending a large box home with an exchange student we had for her mother, who wrote to me saying they were some of the best she had tasted and where could she get them. Now the factory belongs to Ferraro and I don’t think that they are as nice as they were - the recipe seems to have altered, but maybe it’s just me; I must be the only person in the world who thinks that Hotel
Chocolat are nothing to write home about.

Ah Thornton's. Yes. Lovely chocolates (or used to be - not had them for years now), especially their chocolate gingers, which took over for me, from Terry's Chocolate Gingers. Whatever happened to Terry's of York (*ponders*)

I have been married 32 years because of Thornton's chocolates. My now husband arrived to meet me at Waterloo Station, carrying a huge box of Thornton's chocolates. That set his fate in stone right there
