Is Facebook missing me?

This links back to a fairly recent thread when we shared what was 'in' and 'out' for us in recent times. I noticed that many people said Facebook' was 'out' for them and this has been the case for me for a little while now.

Over the past 6 months, I have posted less and less - very rarely initiated posts anyway, rather I just commented on others, and not at all for several weeks now - I just got bored with it. The only reason I now go on it is if someone has sent me a message as I have not signed up to receiving these on my phone. But I am receiving daily 'prompt' FB messages along the lines of ' We are missing you ...' and 'A lot has happened ..'

I am loathe to completely close my account because there are some people that I do keep in contact with on FB, albeit very sporadically, but my interest has definitely waned.

I do have a couple of close friends / family members who seem bemused and somehow ' hurt' that I have elected not to use FB any more - as if it is a personal slight, which is ridiculous to my mind, but there is a definite sense of FB 'reality' as opposed to actual reality and I just can't be doing with it any longer. Anyone else feel the same?

Imperfect27: I do feel just as you do and have not actively used it for several years. It seems it is virtually impossible to close one's account - involves writing to head office in California or something. I also have some contacts who seem hurt by my not using it.

I do find it is the younger family members and contacts who get a lot of joy from Facebook. I consider myself an oldie and prefer to write regular emails or I also use whatsapp for quick communication, sending on photos etc..

Fussbook, Fakebook, "pity likes" grin ...

I use it (or should I say don't use it) pretty much as you describe, but I've not received any bothersome reminders, so maybe it has something to do with your settings?

If that's your feeling then just go with it. Personally it's the way I keep up with the goings on with many family members far and near.
We have a private family group in which we organise meet ups/meals and such so there is no need for phoning around a dozen people to arrange things. Younger ones use other sites than FB too but always join in any family banter that's going on.

I love FB for many reasons but you’re wrong about youngsters Giulia most have moved away from fb ages ago They are all Snapchatting and instagramming and whatsapping . My grandkids signed me up for snapchat and I hate it they send me love pictures and they are gone in a few seconds I like to have a picture I can look at more than once or copy and keep
I have found long lost school friends on FB Set up a local group which started with 27 members and now has 470 buy and sell things locally and belong to hobby and political groups which give me a lot of pleasure ( and pain) I see when things are happening locally which I would probably miss otherwise, play games with ‘unknown’ people I keep my privacy settings tight so none of these other things interfere with my timeline
So I use it a lot it’s my newspaper, my shop, my photo album, and my friend keeper

I put my Facebook account into limbo last week. I couldn't see any point in keeping it open as I rarely use it or even look at it. I find it very irritating that so many sites I want to look at only have Facebook contact these days, like my favourite fishing venue, who now put all their latest information on a Facebook site and not on their website.

I look at FB every night in bed. I have several different pages on my news feed and some are quiet amusing. I am also a member of our local history page and local gossip page. I find out what D is up too more through FB than any other way as she works long hrs and posts at silly o'clock. D and I use Whatsap and a friend and I also communicate via Whatsap.

I read somewhere that young people are not using FB etc as much as they did due to the unpleasantness on there. I never have used social media but have been at the receiving end of nasty comments on there, why can't people talk face to face any more. I use Whatsapp as well for family contact.

tanith Sun 08-Oct-17 09:16:24

Christinefrance you ask "why can't people talk face to face anymore". In a lot of cases families are scattered or even abroad so face to face isn't possible and I certainly would not have the connection with my scattered family/friends without social media. I often get pics and videos from my son and partner who live abroad of my lovely grandson who would be a stranger to me without that.
I for one am exceeding grateful it now exists.

I closed my Facebook account years ago.

Sometimes out of boredom/ curiousity i click on friends of friends only to find i can see all their posts. When i point this out they are always surprised. Too many dont check their privacy.
Husband has facebook and i look in and ocassionally comment but wouldnt want it myself as most of my friends dont and having no family apart from our children, would have an Embarrassing lack of 'friends'. Could be depressing. Then how about people who value themselves by the amount of ' likes' on posts. Could be depressing,

silverlining48 Sun 08-Oct-17 09:32:25

I could be repeating myself ......

harrigran Sun 08-Oct-17 09:37:03

If I wasn't on FB I would not have a clue where my family were or what they are up to.

maryhoffman37 Sun 08-Oct-17 11:00:32

No. I am on Facebook on and off all day. Can't imagine life without it now. Of course they aren't missing you, just using an algorithm. Stay off if you don't like it.

I've been culling mine for a while ,I have a few political groups and I use it to msg my daughter usually after midnight when she has trouble sleeping,we have a good old blether without disturbing anyone else.I got fed up with a lot of nonsense on it,the happy birthdays to mums in heaven, the endless pictures of peoples food, every picture being labelled STUNNING ,when it clearly isn't.So the folk who put on endless shots of hills and rivers have gone too.Maybe I'm getting grumpy ...maybe they just need to grow up....lol

inishowen Sun 08-Oct-17 11:07:29

I check Facebook every day. I always get a little lift if any of the family has posted pictures. I rarely post anything myself but do comment quite a lot. It's a bit of fun, but it's up to you whether you want to be there or not.

Craftycat Sun 08-Oct-17 11:13:33

I look at it every day- maybe post once a fortnight or so if something interesting happens or I go somewhere I want to recommend.
My main bugbear are the number of ads. that pop up.

GrumpyOldBat Sun 08-Oct-17 11:38:28

It is a communication tool not a life-substitute or parallel dimension. Those who fill it with cross do not trouble me because I delete them - my page is a mix of old friends, activism, work, and fun, with different privacy settings for each usage. Just be ruthless - if it is dull, cull...

mags1234 Sun 08-Oct-17 11:49:48

I use daily, mainly to keep in touch with family abroad, but I’m in a couple of private support groups which are a godsend.

Imperfect27 Sun 08-Oct-17 11:49:59

maryhoffman - t'was tongue in cheek. I know the 'machine' rolls on. I used to value FB as the main way to stay in touch with my children when they were at uni and just beyond. These days we have a Watts App family group so my needs have changed. I just find it odd that some friends seem to mind. Each to their own.

Musicelf Sun 08-Oct-17 11:57:20

I have only a handful of Facebook "friends" and prefer to use it for local history/news/genealogy etc. I keep up with my DD's photos on there, although we correspond regularly via email and phone, but otherwise I find myself responding to posts less and less and am pretty much bored with the whole thing.

cupcake1 Sun 08-Oct-17 11:59:33

Never felt the urge to go on FB- seen and heard too many bad experiences from friends and family and like others on here keep in contact via whatsapp. Having said all that I am on instagram which I access daily blush

hildajenniJ Sun 08-Oct-17 12:02:01

My DD encouraged me to have a Facebook account, mainly for keeping up with the doings of the grandchildren. Since then I have found some old school friends, joined a crochet group, and a local photography group. I use the messenger app too. It's a great way to keep in touch with far flung family as my cousins live in New Zealand and South Africa.

Lindajane Sun 08-Oct-17 12:05:45

I use FB regularly. With relatives so far apart (most of DH’s overseas) it’s a lovely to keep up-to-date with what’s going on, especially photos of events missed and photos of our new grandchild.
I also follow interest groups. I love it!

Bamm Sun 08-Oct-17 12:20:48

Tanith, I agree ! My son, daughter in law and grandchildren live in the USA and I am delighted when I see a video or picture of them on Facebook posted by an aunt, friend or parents of my daughter in law. I also post pictures of places I visit, English countryside etc for them to see. I only have close friends and family on Facebook and it works well for me. That and Skype enable me to be part of their lives ( a bit anyway ).
