I came from a family which had little money to splurge. When my mother was with my father he made her work as well as him and she paid the bills while he saved capital for himself. When she left him she had to have two jobs to support my sister and myself. It all left a mark. Then when I married my DH came from a family where his mother was acutely controlling with money and so he is careful too.
Therefore we are savers and not spenders. I still have massive anxiety attacks when I spend a large sum on myself, for example, for a coat. I also have 'buyer's remorse' and take things back a lot.
It's crazy as we are not badly off now.
However, I remember my MIL saying to me once, 'It's not that I have to spend money on things to make myself feel good. It's being able to if I want to. If I feel that "I can if I want" I don't actually have to spend the money.' That stuck with me and seemed quite a good philosophy.
So I am a mixture of 'Can't spend/won't spend.'
